    Hypoxia Signaling Pathway in Stem Cell Regulation: Good and Evil

    Purpose of Review: This review summarizes the role of hypoxia and hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) in the regulation of stem cell biology, specifically focusing on maintenance, differentiation, and stress responses in the context of several stem cell systems. Stem cells for different lineages/tissues reside in distinct niches, and are exposed to diverse oxygen concentrations. Recent studies have revealed the importance of the hypoxia signaling pathway for stem cell functions. Recent Findings: Hypoxia and HIFs contribute to maintenance of embryonic stem cells, generation of induced pluripotent stem cells, functionality of hematopoietic stem cells, and survival of leukemia stem cells. Harvest and collection of mouse bone marrow and human cord blood cells in ambient air results in fewer hematopoietic stem cells recovered due to the phenomenon of Extra PHysiologic Oxygen Shock/Stress (EPHOSS). Summary: Oxygen is an important factor in the stem cell microenvironment. Hypoxia signaling and HIFs play important roles in modeling cellular metabolism in both stem cells and niches to regulate stem cell biology, and represent an additional dimension that allows stem cells to maintain an undifferentiated status and multilineage differentiation potential

    Migration, Money and Mother: The Effect of Migration on Children's Educational Performance in Rural China

    Migration is widely known as one of the main ways of alleviating poverty in developing countries, including China. However, migration itself is not costless. In recent years, there is an emerging concern about the effect of migration on the educational achievement of the children of migrants in China since most of the young children of school age of the migrants are being left in the village when one or both of their parents move to the city to work. This paper examines the effect of the migration activities of the father and/or mother on the educational performance of elementary school students (First to Fifth grade). With a dataset that collected from a survey designed specifically to examine changes in school performance of children before and after their parents left the village to migrate to the city we use Difference-in-Difference and, propensity score matching approaches. Although the grades of the children from some migrants family are sometimes lower than those from non-migrants family (in the time period before and after migration), somewhat surprisingly, we find that there is no significant negative effect of migration itself on the childrens school performance. In fact, in some cases (e.g., after the father migrates), performance improves.     An entanglement measure for n-qubits

    Recently, Coffman, Kundu, and Wootters introduced the residual entanglement for three qubits to quantify the three-qubit entanglement in Phys. Rev. A 61, 052306 (2000). In Phys. Rev. A 65, 032304 (2007), we defined the residual entanglement for nn qubits, whose values are between 0 and 1. In this paper, we want to show that the residual entanglement for nn qubits is a natural measure of entanglement by demonstrating the following properties. (1). It is SL-invariant, especially LU-invariant. (2). It is an entanglement monotone. (3). It is invariant under permutations of the qubits. (4).     Enhancing human cord blood hematopoietic stem cell engraftment by targeting nuclear hormone receptors

    PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a life-saving therapy for hematological and nonhematological diseases. Cord blood is a source of transplantable hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), but limited numbers of HSCs in single cord blood units, which may cause delayed neutrophil, platelet, and immune cell reconstitution, is a major problem for efficient transplantation. Ex-vivo expansion and enhanced homing of cord blood HSC may overcome this disadvantage and improve its long-term engraftment. Here, we discuss the role of nuclear hormone receptors signaling in human cord blood HSC engraftment. RECENT FINDINGS: Antagonizing retinoid acid receptor (RAR) signaling promotes human HSC expansion and increases myeloid cell production. Cord blood CD34 cells expanded by SR1 promotes efficient myeloid recovery after transplantation compared with control groups, and leads to successful engraftment. Short-term treatment of glucocorticoids enhances homing and long-term engraftment of human HSCs and HPCs in NSG mice. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) antagonism expands human HSCs and HPCs by preventing differentiation and enhancing glucose metabolism. These findings demonstrate that nuclear hormone receptor signaling components might be promising targets for improving human cord blood HCT. SUMMARY: Better understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying human HSC expansion and homing mediated by nuclear hormone receptor signaling pathways will facilitate enhanced HCT efficacy

    With the bursting development of computer science and the hardware technology, Internet of Things and wireless sensor networks has been popularly studied in the community of engineering. Under the environment of Internet of Things, we carry out theoretical analysis and numerical simulation on the sensor network spectrum detection technology based on cognitive radio network. As a means of information and intelligence, information service system is an important research hotspot in the field of Internet of things. Wireless sensor network is composed of a large number of micro sensor nodes, which have the function of information collection, data processing, and wireless communication, characterized by the integration of wireless self-organization. However, most of the methodologies proposed by the other institutes are suffering form the high complexity while with the high time-consuming when processing information. Therefore, this study is to assess the economic feasibility of using the optimized multipath protocol availability and the increased bandwidth and several mobile operators through the use of cost-benefit analysis, single path selection model is to develop more path agreement to achieve better performance. To test the robustness, we compare our method with the other state-of-the-art approach in the simulation section and proves the effectiveness of our methodology. The experimental result reflected that our approach could achieve higher accuracy with low time-consuming when dealing with complex sources of information
