Comparison of photocatalytic activity and cyclic voltammetry of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide nanoparticles toward degradation of methylene blue
We report on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) solution using commercial ZnO and TiO2 (P25) photocatalysts, in the form of slurry and immobilized on glass slides, under ultraviolet (UV) and solar irradiations. The average particle sizes of ZnO and P25 were 100 nm and 30 nm, respectively. Under both the irradiations, the photocatalytic activities of ZnO and P25 slurry resulted in better photocatalytic performance than the immobilized photocatalysts. Interestingly, ZnO showed better degradation capability in comparison to P25 under the solar irradiation. This result revealed that solar light provided a good source of energy to degrade MB in the presence of ZnO. The cyclic voltammetry analysis suggested that the photocatalysts possessed different mechanisms for the degradation of MB. The potential of immobilizing photocatalysts without compromising their performance may lead to easy handling of these materials, resulting in expanding their applications, for example, as a photoanode for photoelectrochemistry
Distribution and density of the partition function zeros for the diamond-decorated Ising model
Exact renormalization map of temperature between two successive decorated
lattices is given, and the distribution of the partition function zeros in the
complex temperature plane is obtained for any decoration-level. The rule
governing the variation of the distribution pattern as the decoration-level
changes is given. The densities of the zeros for the first two
decoration-levels are calculated explicitly, and the qualitative features about
the densities of higher decoration-levels are given by conjecture. The Julia
set associated with the renormalization map is contained in the distribution of
the zeros in the limit of infinite decoration level, and the formation of the
Julia set in the course of increasing the decoration-level is given in terms of

Associated Production of a Z Boson and a Single Heavy-Quark Jet
The leading-order process for the production of a Z boson and a heavy-quark
jet at hadron colliders is gQ -> ZQ (Q=c,b). We calculate this cross section at
next-to-leading order at the Tevatron and the LHC, and compare it with other
sources of ZQ events. This process is a background to new physics, and can be

Effects of arformoterol twice daily, tiotropium once daily, and their combination in patients with COPD
Current guidelines support using in combination more than one class of long-acting bronchodilator for COPD patients whose symptoms are not controlled by mono-therapy. This 2-week, multi-center (34 sites), randomized, modified-blind, parallel group study evaluated the efficacy and safety of concomitant treatment with nebulized arformoterol (the formoterol(R,R)-isomer) BID and tiotropium DPI QD. COPD patients (mean FEV(1) 1.37L, 45.4% predicted) were randomized to receive mono-therapy (either arformoterol 15microg BID [n=76] or tiotropium 18microg QD [n=80]), or combined therapy (sequential dosing of arformoterol 15microg BID and tiotropium 18microg QD [n=78]). Changes in pulmonary function, dyspnea, and rescue levalbuterol use were evaluated, as were safety outcomes. Mean FEV(1)AUC(0-24) (the primary endpoint) improved similarly from baseline for arformoterol (0.10L) and tiotropium (0.08L) treatment groups and greater for the combined therapy group (0.22L; all p-values <0.005). Peak FEV(1), peak FVC, 24-h trough FEV(1), and inspiratory capacity also improved similarly for the mono-therapies and greatest for the combined therapy. Dyspnea (mean transition dyspnea index) improved similarly for arformoterol (+2.3) and tiotropium (+1.8) and greatest with combined therapy (+3.1; p-values <0.05). Levalbuterol use decreased for all treatment groups (range -1.8 to -2.5 actuations/day). All treatments had similar frequency of adverse events. In this study, the combination of nebulized arformoterol 15microg BID plus tiotropium 18microg DPI QD was the most effective in improving pulmonary function and disease symptoms. Mono-therapy improvement with arformoterol or tiotropium was similar. All three treatments were well tolerated
Traveling wave solutions for a predator-prey system with Sigmoidal response function
We study the existence of traveling wave solutions for a diffusive
predator-prey system. The system considered in this paper is governed by a
Sigmoidal response function which is more general than those studied
previously. Our method is an improvement to the original method introduced in
the work of Dunbar \cite{Dunbar1,Dunbar2}. A bounded Wazewski set is used in
this work while unbounded Wazewski sets were used in \cite{Dunbar1,Dunbar2}.
The existence of traveling wave solutions connecting two equilibria is
established by using the original Wazewski's theorem which is much simpler than
the extended version in Dunbar's work
An epitaxial model for heterogeneous nucleation on potent substrates
© The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2012In this article, we present an epitaxial model for heterogeneous nucleation on potent substrates. It is proposed that heterogeneous nucleation of the solid phase (S) on a potent substrate (N) occurs by epitaxial growth of a pseudomorphic solid (PS) layer on the substrate surface under a critical undercooling (ΔT ). The PS layer with a coherent PS/N interface mimics the atomic arrangement of the substrate, giving rise to a linear increase of misfit strain energy with layer thickness. At a critical thickness (h ), elastic strain energy reaches a critical level, at which point, misfit dislocations are created to release the elastic strain energy in the PS layer. This converts the strained PS layer to a strainless solid (S), and changes the initial coherent PS/N interface into a semicoherent S/N interface. Beyond this critical thickness, further growth will be strainless, and solidification enters the growth stage. It is shown analytically that the lattice misfit (f) between the solid and the substrate has a strong influence on both h and ΔT ; h decreases; and ΔT increases with increasing lattice misfit. This epitaxial nucleation model will be used to explain qualitatively the generally accepted experimental findings on grain refinement in the literature and to analyze the general approaches to effective grain refinement.EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Liquid Metal Engineerin
SRAO CO Observation of 11 Supernova Remnants in l = 70 to 190 deg
We present the results of 12CO J = 1-0 line observations of eleven Galactic
supernova remnants (SNRs) obtained using the Seoul Radio Astronomy Observatory
(SRAO) 6-m radio telescope. The observation was made as a part of the SRAO CO
survey of SNRs between l = 70 and 190 deg, which is intended to identify SNRs
interacting with molecular clouds. The mapping areas for the individual SNRs
are determined to cover their full extent in the radio continuum. We used
halfbeam grid spacing (60") for 9 SNRs and full-beam grid spacing (120") for
the rest. We detected CO emission towards most of the remnants. In six SNRs,
molecular clouds showed a good spatial relation with their radio morphology,
although no direct evidence for the interaction was detected. Two SNRs are
particularly interesting: G85.4+0.7, where there is a filamentary molecular
cloud along the radio shell, and 3C434.1, where a large molecular cloud appears
to block the western half of the remnant. We briefly summarize the results

Impact force identification with pseudo-inverse method on a lightweight structure for under-determined, even-determined and over-determined cases
Force identification using inverse technique is important especially when direct measurement through force transducer is not possible. Considering the effects of impact excitation force on the integrity of a lightweight structure, impact force identification has become the subject of several studies. A methodology utilising Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) analysis, Frequency Response Function (FRF) measurement and pseudo-inverse method to evaluate the dynamic force is presented. A rectangular plate with four ground supports was used as a test rig to simulate the motions of a simple vehicle body. By using the measured responses at remote points that are away from impact locations and measured FRFs of the test rig, unknown force locations and their time histories can be recovered by the proposed method. The performance of this approach in various cases such as under-determined, even-determined and over-determined cases was experimentally demonstrated. Good and bad combinations of response locations were selected based on the condition number of FRF matrix. This force identification method was examined under different response combinations and various numbers of response locations. It shows that in the over-determined case, good combination of response locations (i.e. low average of condition number of FRF matrix) and high number of response locations give the best accuracy of force identification result compared to under-determined and even-determined cases
P-wave excited baryons from pion- and photo-induced hyperon production
We report evidence for , , ,
, , and , and find
indications that might have a companion state at 1970\,MeV. The
controversial is not seen. The evidence is derived from a
study of data on pion- and photo-induced hyperon production, but other data are
included as well. Most of the resonances reported here were found in the
Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH84) and the Carnegie-Mellon (CM) analyses but were
challenged recently by the Data Analysis Center at GWU. Our analysis is
constrained by the energy independent scattering amplitudes from either
KH84 or GWU. The two amplitudes from KH84 or GWU, respectively, lead to
slightly different branching ratios of contributing resonances but the
