A Dynamic Model of Decision-making in the IS/IT Outsourcing Process: A Case Study from a Government-supported

    Get PDF
The IS/IT outsourcing process is complex and the outcome is unpredictable, especially in the varied participants, complicated social and political environments. Prior research on IS/IT outsourcing decisions simply assumed the rational, comprehensive, independent decisionmaking activity is not descriptively accurate and perhaps thus cannot be prescriptively useful in this complex environment. To get deeper understandings of the decision-making in the IS/IT outsourcing process, this research creates a dynamic model to illustrate the complex phenomenon. In-depth case study methodology and process-oriented analysis strategy were used to interpret a government-supported, outsourced IS project. This study indicates that decision makers should regard the IS/IT outsourcing process as a continuous, integral process in context and consider the structural influence, antecedent conditions, and future impact in every decision episode. This paper provides an initial insight by studying IS/IT outsourcing decision-making through dynamic and process perspective

THE STRATEGY OF MUSCULAR PRE-TENSION DURING INITIAL BLOCK PHASE IN SWIMMING GRAB START

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of muscular pre-tension on swimming grab start performance. Eight well-trained subjects participated in this study. They were instructed to perform three strategies (stretch-shortening cycle, purely concentric with and with no muscular pre-tension) in grab start. Two Peak-Performance high-speed video cameras operating at 120 Hz and one Kistler force plate (600 Hz) mounted on the starting block were synchronized to collect the data. The results showed that the block time was significantly shorter and horizontal velocity of taking off was larger in muscular pre-tension than in stretch-shortening cycle strategy. Based on the results of the present study, it has been suggested that using muscular pre-tension strategy during initial block phase in grab start could add some benefits of decreasing time

A Model for the Instructional Factors of Curatorial Teaching in Design Education

The increased demand for design exhibitions directly reflects the demand for designer-curators to manage cultural policies and social needs. However, in the current design education system in Taiwan, no curation-related curriculum planning exists. Therefore, this study attempted to design a practical curation course focused on “designer curated exhibition” experiential learning. This study encouraged design students to consider the formation of exhibitions from a comprehensive point of view. The teaching and learning process gave rise to a model of the instructional factors of curatorial education. We found a positive correlation between “learning process and motive” and “learning effectiveness.” Moreover, positive correlations were observed between “curation theories,” “learning processes and motives,” and “curatorial experience.” This demonstrates that curatorial practice increases the curator’s ability to apply curatorial theory, and excites the curator’s motivation to learn. However, the performance of self-evaluation reflects a lack of self-confidence and recognition; this lack may be caused by the restrictions of time and space, and by the complexity of curating teamwork communication. This model will continuously be translated and validated through the curriculum in the future, and the course will encourage students’ self-learning to enhance practical teaching and planning

THE COMPARSION OF CURVATURE RADIUS IN DIFFERENT PERFORMANCES

The purpose of this study was to compare the curvature radius of different performance (63.20m and 68.46m) of hammer throw. The subject, who is the present record holder in Taiwan, has 9 years of experience in hammer throw. Two Peak-Performance high-speed video cameras operating at 120Hz were used simultaneously to record the performances of the subject. The results indicated that the patterns were completely different between two performances of hammer throw. The better performance was more periodic than the other. Based on the results of this study, it has been suggested that other sport events that include aspects of rotation may also benefit by adjustment of the pattern from their curvature radius

Apoptotic Sphingolipid Ceramide in Cancer Therapy

Apoptosis, also called programmed cell death, is physiologically and pathologically involved in cellular homeostasis. Escape of apoptotic signaling is a critical strategy commonly used for cancer tumorigenesis. Ceramide, a derivative of sphingolipid breakdown products, acts as second messenger for multiple extracellular stimuli including growth factors, chemical agents, and environmental stresses, such as hypoxia, and heat stress as well as irradiation. Also, ceramide acts as tumor-suppressor lipid because a variety of stress stimuli cause apoptosis by increasing intracellular ceramide to initiate apoptotic signaling. Defects on ceramide generation and sphingolipid metabolism are developed for cancer cell survival and cancer therapy resistance. Alternatively, targeting ceramide metabolism to correct these defects might provide opportunities to overcome cancer therapy resistance

Rupture of Renal Pelvis in an Adult with Congenital Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction After Blunt Abdominal Trauma

Isolated injury to the renal pelvis following blunt abdominal trauma is very rare. However, a pre-existing renal abnormality will increase the risk of rupture. We present a 24-year-old man with rupture of the left renal pelvis following blunt abdominal trauma. He had pre-existing left ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. Delayed computed tomography scan with excretory phase revealed contrast medium extravasation from the left UPJ, and left renal pelvis rupture was diagnosed. He was managed successfully with ureteral double-J stenting for 2 months

Coexistence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with asthma appears to impair asthma control. Type-2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) respond to the cytokines of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), interleukin (IL)-25 and IL-33, thus contributing to airway diseases such as CRS and asthma. We investigate whether the augmented Th2-cytokines in CRS might be related to sinonasal tract ILC2s corresponding to enhanced IL-25, IL-33 and TSLP release in severe asthmatics, and be involved in asthma control. Twenty-eight asthmatics (12 non-severe and 16 severe) with CRS receiving nasal surgery were enrolled. The predicted FEV1 inversely associated with CRS severity of CT or endoscopy scores. Higher expression of Th2-driven cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, and IL-13), TSLP, IL-25 and IL-33 in nasal tissues was observed in severe asthma. Severe asthmatics had higher ILC2 cell counts in their nasal tissues. ILC2 counts were positively correlated with Th2-cytokines. Nasal surgery significantly improved asthma control and lung function decline in severe asthma and CRS. The higher expression of IL-33/ILC2 axis-directed type 2 immune responses in nasal tissue of CRS brought the greater decline of lung function in severe asthma. ILC2-induced the upregulated activity of Th2-related cytokines in asthmatics with CRS may contribute to a recalcitrant status of asthma control

Regulation of CLC-1 chloride channel biosynthesis by FKBP8 and Hsp90β.

Mutations in human CLC-1 chloride channel are associated with the skeletal muscle disorder myotonia congenita. The disease-causing mutant A531V manifests enhanced proteasomal degradation of CLC-1. We recently found that CLC-1 degradation is mediated by cullin 4 ubiquitin ligase complex. It is currently unclear how quality control and protein degradation systems coordinate with each other to process the biosynthesis of CLC-1. Herein we aim to ascertain the molecular nature of the protein quality control system for CLC-1. We identified three CLC-1-interacting proteins that are well-known heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90)-associated co-chaperones: FK506-binding protein 8 (FKBP8), activator of Hsp90 ATPase homolog 1 (Aha1), and Hsp70/Hsp90 organizing protein (HOP). These co-chaperones promote both the protein level and the functional expression of CLC-1 wild-type and A531V mutant. CLC-1 biosynthesis is also facilitated by the molecular chaperones Hsc70 and Hsp90β. The protein stability of CLC-1 is notably increased by FKBP8 and the Hsp90β inhibitor 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG) that substantially suppresses cullin 4 expression. We further confirmed that cullin 4 may interact with Hsp90β and FKBP8. Our data are consistent with the idea that FKBP8 and Hsp90β play an essential role in the late phase of CLC-1 quality control by dynamically coordinating protein folding and degradation
