    Robust block preconditioners for biot’s model

    In this paper, we design robust and efficient block preconditioners for the two-field formulation of Biot’s consolidation model, where stabilized finite-element discretizations are used. The proposed block preconditioners are based on the well-posedness of the discrete linear systems. Block diagonal (norm-equivalent) and block triangular preconditioners are developed, and we prove that these methods are robust with respect to both physical and discretization parameters. Numerical results are presented to support the theoretical results

    Robust preconditioners for a new stabilized discretization of the poroelastic equations

    In this paper, we present block preconditioners for a stabilized discretization of the poroelastic equations developed in [C. Rodrigo, X. Hu, P. Ohm, J. Adler, F. Gaspar, and L. Zikatanov, Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg., 341 (2018), pp. 467-484]. The discretization is proved to be well-posed with respect to the physical and discretization parameters and thus provides a framework to develop preconditioners that are robust with respect to such parameters as well. We construct both norm-equivalent (diagonal) and field-of-value-equivalent (triangular) preconditioners for both the stabilized discretization and a perturbation of the stabilized discretization, which leads to a smaller overall problem after static condensation. Numerical tests for both two-and three-dimensional problems confirm the robustness of the block preconditioners with respect to the physical and discretization parameters

    A nonconforming finite element method for the Biot’s consolidation model in poroelasticity

    A stable finite element scheme that avoids pressure oscillations for a three-field Biot’s model in poroelasticity is considered. The involved variables are the displacements, fluid flux (Darcy velocity), and the pore pressure, and they are discretized by using the lowest possible approximation order: Crouzeix–Raviart finite elements for the displacements, lowest order Raviart–Thomas-Nédélec elements for the Darcy velocity, and piecewise constant approximation for the pressure. Mass-lumping technique is introduced for the Raviart–Thomas-Nédélec elements in order to eliminate the Darcy velocity and, therefore, reduce the computational cost. We show convergence of the discrete scheme which is implicit in time and use these types of elements in space with and without mass-lumping. Finally, numerical experiments illustrate the convergence of the method and show its effectiveness to avoid spurious pressure oscillations when mass lumping for the Raviart–Thomas-Nédélec elements is used

    Attachment Styles Within the Coach-Athlete Dyad: Preliminary Investigation and Assessment Development

    The present preliminary study aimed to develop and examine the psychometric properties of a new sport-specific self-report instrument designed to assess athletes’ and coaches’ attachment styles. The development and initial validation comprised three main phases. In Phase 1, a pool of items was generated based on pre-existing self-report attachment instruments, modified to reflect a coach and an athlete’s style of attachment. In Phase 2, the content validity of the items was assessed by a panel of experts. A final scale was developed and administered to 405 coaches and 298 athletes (N = 703 participants). In Phase 3, confirmatory factor analysis of the obtained data was conducted to determine the final items of the Coach-Athlete Attachment Scale (CAAS). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed acceptable goodness of fit indexes for a 3-first order factor model as well as a 2-first order factor model for both the athlete and the coach data, respectively. A secure attachment style positively predicted relationship satisfaction, while an insecure attachment style was a negative predictor of relationship satisfaction.     Assessing the impact of natural policy experiments on socioeconomic inequalities in health

    Background: The scientific evidence-base for policies to tackle health inequalities is limited. Natural policy experiments (NPE) have drawn increasing attention as a means to evaluating the effects of policies on health. Several analytical methods can be used to evaluate the outcomes of NPEs in terms of average population health, but it is unclear whether they can also be used to assess the outcomes of NPEs in terms of health inequalities. The aim of this study therefore was to assess whether, and to demonstrate how, a number of commonly used analytical methods for the evaluation of NPEs can be applied to quantify the effect of policies on health inequalities. Methods: We identified seven quantitative analytical methods for the evaluation of NPEs: regression adjustment, propensity score matching, difference-in-differences analysis, fixed effects analysis, instrumental variable analysis, regression discontinuity and interrupted time-series. We assessed whether these methods can be used to quantify the effect of policies on the magnitude of health inequalities either by conducting a stratified analysis or by including an interaction term, and illustrated both approaches in a fictitious numerical example. Results: All seven methods can be used to quantify the equity impact of policies on absolute and relative inequalities in health by conducting an analysis stratified by socioeconomic position, and all but one (propensity score matching) can be used to quantify equity impacts by inclusion of an interaction term between socioeconomic position and policy exposure. Conclusion: Methods commonly used in economics and econometrics for the evaluation of NPEs can also be applied to assess the equity impact of policies, and our illustrations provide guidance on how to do this appropriately. The low external validity of results from instrumental variable analysis and regression discontinuity makes these methods less desirable for assessing policy effects on population-level health inequalities. Increased use of the methods in social epidemiology will help to build an evidence base to support policy making in the area of health inequalities

    The Conformal Willmore Functional: a Perturbative Approach

    The conformal Willmore functional (which is conformal invariant in general Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M,g)) is studied with a perturbative method: the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction. Existence of critical points is shown in ambient manifolds (R3,gϵ)(\mathbb{R}^3, g_\epsilon) -where gϵg_\epsilon is a metric close and asymptotic to the euclidean one.     Size-dependent decoherence of excitonic states in semiconductor microcrystallites

    The size-dependent decoherence of the exciton states resulting from the spontaneous emission is investigated in a semiconductor spherical microcrystallite under condition aB≪R0≤λa_{B}\ll R_{0}\leq\lambda. In general, the larger size of the microcrystallite corresponds to the shorter coherence time. If the initial state is a superposition of two different excitonic coherent states, the coherence time depends on both the overlap of two excitonic coherent states and the size of the microcrystallite. When the system with fixed size is initially in the even or odd coherent states, the larger average number of the excitons corresponds to the faster decoherence. When the average number of the excitons is given, the bigger size of the microcrystallite corresponds to the faster decoherence. The decoherence of the exciton states for the materials GaAs and CdS is numerically studied by our theoretical analysis.Comment: 4 pages, two figure

    Income inequality, life expectancy and cause-specific mortality in 43 European countries, 1987–2008: a fixed effects study

    Whether income inequality is related to population health is still open to debate. We aimed to critically assess the relationship between income inequality and mortality in 43 European countries using comparable data between 1987 and 2008, controlling for time-invariant and time-variant country-level confounding factors. Annual data on income inequality, expressed as Gini index based on net household income, were extracted from the Standardizing the World Income Inequality Database. Data on life expectancy at birth and age-standardized mortality by cause of death were obtained from the Human Lifetable Database and the World Health Organization European Health for All Database. Data on infant mortality were obtained from the United Nations World Population Prospects Database. The relationships between income inequality and mortality indicators were studied using country fixed effects models, adjusted for time trends and country characteristics. Significant associations between income inequality and many mortality indicators were found in pooled cross-sectional regressions, indicating higher mortality in countries with larger income inequalities. Once the country fixed effects were added, all associations between income inequality and mortality indicators became insignificant, except for mortality from external causes and homicide among men, and cancers among women.
