    TITER: predicting translation initiation sites by deep learning.

    MotivationTranslation initiation is a key step in the regulation of gene expression. In addition to the annotated translation initiation sites (TISs), the translation process may also start at multiple alternative TISs (including both AUG and non-AUG codons), which makes it challenging to predict TISs and study the underlying regulatory mechanisms. Meanwhile, the advent of several high-throughput sequencing techniques for profiling initiating ribosomes at single-nucleotide resolution, e.g. GTI-seq and QTI-seq, provides abundant data for systematically studying the general principles of translation initiation and the development of computational method for TIS identification.MethodsWe have developed a deep learning-based framework, named TITER, for accurately predicting TISs on a genome-wide scale based on QTI-seq data. TITER extracts the sequence features of translation initiation from the surrounding sequence contexts of TISs using a hybrid neural network and further integrates the prior preference of TIS codon composition into a unified prediction framework.ResultsExtensive tests demonstrated that TITER can greatly outperform the state-of-the-art prediction methods in identifying TISs. In addition, TITER was able to identify important sequence signatures for individual types of TIS codons, including a Kozak-sequence-like motif for AUG start codon. Furthermore, the TITER prediction score can be related to the strength of translation initiation in various biological scenarios, including the repressive effect of the upstream open reading frames on gene expression and the mutational effects influencing translation initiation efficiency.Availability and implementationTITER is available as an open-source software and can be downloaded from https://github.com/zhangsaithu/titer [email protected] or [email protected] informationSupplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online

    Receipt of informal care in the Chinese older population

    This paper examines the factors affecting the receipt of informal care among older people in China. It uses the second wave data of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey, which collected ageing and health-related information on a nationally representative sample of 8,906 older people aged 60 and over in 2013. Apart from the factors that have been examined in the contexts of developed countries, the paper further investigates two factors specific to Chinese society: rural–urban residence and regular financial assistance from children. Based on binary and multinomial logit regression analyses, the research findings are threefold: the determinants of receiving informal care differ remarkably according to the sources of care; disability and living arrangements are the most important determinants; rural–urban residence plays a vital role in the Chinese context, but regular financial assistance from children makes little difference. It is estimated that 53 million older people are receiving informal care each year, a figure equivalent to the entire population of England. With continuous population ageing, Chinese society will face huge pressure to meet the demand for social care among older people in the future. The Chinese government needs to build a well-rounded welfare system that tackles this challenge from multiple dimensions. The formal care services should aim to complement informal care in the short run and reduce inequality in social care in the long run

    Creating a knowledge map for the Research Lifecycle

    In this study, a Knowledge Map (KM) was created based on the Research Lifecycle at the University of Central Florida to provide campus-wide services and resources to researchers. The KM aims to meet the needs of researchers and delivers guided searching and assistance in all aspects of research, including literature review, citation management, research data management, grant management, research work publication and dissemination. It elaborates the research processes and their associated services as presented in the Research Lifecycle, and links these points to various campus resources including those provided by the University Libraries, the Office of Research and Commercialization, the Institute for Simulation and Training and the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. It gives unified support to the researchers during their entire research lifecycle and it will keep evolving and developing

    Coherent quantum effects through dispersive bosonic media

    The coherent evolution of two atomic qubits mediated by a set of bosonic field modes is investigated. By assuming a specific encoding of the quantum states in the internal levels of the two atoms we show that entangling quantum gates can be realised, with high fidelity, even when a large number of mediating modes is involved.     Integrating transit and TNC services to improve job accessibility: Scenario analysis with an equity lens

    With the rapid growth of Transportation Network Company (TNC) services and the continued decline of transit ridership, existing research has proposed and some transit agencies have implemented programs that integrate transit and TNC services. This paper expands the research area to examine the equity implications of such integrations, focusing on job accessibility improvements for low-income workers. We develop an analytical framework that compares improvements in accessibility to jobs under different hypothetical scenarios in which TNC travel serves as the last-mile connection of transit services. Using the city of Chicago for the case study, this research confirms that such transit-TNC integration increases job accessibility for all low-income workers throughout the city, but it also pinpoints nuanced differences in the accessibility improvements among workers of different races, ethnicities, and sexes during peak and off-peak hours

It is used in many use cases such as the building of chat bots, suggestive prompts in google search and also as a way of navigating information in banking mobile applications etc. It is highly relevant because a frequently asked questions (FAQ) list can only have a finite amount of questions but a model which can perform question answer generation could be able to answer completely new questions that are within the scope of the data. This helps us to be able to answer new questions accurately as long as it is a relevant question. In commercial applications, it can be used to increase customer satisfaction and ease of usage.
