    High speed quantum gates with cavity quantum electrodynamics

    Cavity quantum electrodynamic schemes for quantum gates are amongst the earliest quantum computing proposals. Despite continued progress, and the dramatic recent demonstration of photon blockade, there are still issues with optimal coupling and gate operation involving high-quality cavities. Here we show dynamic control techniques that allow scalable cavity-QED based quantum gates, that use the full bandwidth of the cavities. When applied to quantum gates, these techniques allow an order of magnitude increase in operating speed, and two orders of magnitude reduction in cavity Q, over passive cavity-QED architectures. Our methods exploit Stark shift based Q-switching, and are ideally suited to solid-state integrated optical approaches to quantum computing.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, minor revision

    Improvement of Insulin Sensitivity by Isoenergy High Carbohydrate Traditional Asian Diet: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Feasibility Study

    The prevalence of diabetes is rising dramatically among Asians, with increased consumption of the typical Western diet as one possible cause. We explored the metabolic responses in East Asian Americans (AA) and Caucasian Americans (CA) when transitioning from a traditional Asian diet (TAD) to a typical Western diet (TWD), which has not been reported before. This 16-week randomized control pilot feasibility study, included 28AA and 22CA who were at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Eight weeks of TAD were provided to all participants, followed by 8 weeks of isoenergy TWD (intervention) or TAD (control). Anthropometric measures, lipid profile, insulin resistance and inflammatory markers were assessed. While on TAD, both AA and CA improved in insulin AUC (āˆ’960.2 ĀµU/mLƗh, P = 0.001) and reduced in weight (āˆ’1.6 kg; P<0.001), body fat (āˆ’1.7%, P<0.001) and trunk fat (āˆ’2.2%, P<0.001). Comparing changes from TAD to TWD, AA had a smaller weight gain (āˆ’1.8 to 0.3 kg, P<0.001) than CA (āˆ’1.4 to 0.9 kg, P = 0.001), but a greater increase in insulin AUC (AA: āˆ’1402.4 to 606.2 ĀµU/mLƗh, P = 0.015 vs CA: āˆ’466.0 to 223.5 ĀµU/mLƗh, P = 0.034) and homeostatic static model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (AA: āˆ’0.3 to 0.2, P = 0.042 vs CA: āˆ’0.1 to 0.0, P = 0.221). Despite efforts to maintain isoenergy state and consumption of similar energy, TAD induced weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity in both groups, while TWD worsened the metabolic profile.     Pulse shaping by coupled-cavities: Single photons and qudits

    Dynamic coupling of cavities to a quantum network is of major interest to distributed quantum information processing schemes based on cavity quantum electrodynamics. This can be achieved by active tuning a mediating atom-cavity system. In particular, we consider the dynamic coupling between two coupled cavities, each interacting with a two-level atom, realized by tuning one of the atoms. One atom-field system can be controlled to become maximally and minimally coupled with its counterpart, allowing high fidelity excitation confinement, Q-switching and reversible state transport. As an application, we first show that simple tuning can lead to emission of near-Gaussian single-photon pulses that is significantly different from the usual exponential decay in a passive cavity-based system. The influences of cavity loss and atomic spontaneous emission are studied in detailed numerical simulations, showing the practicality of these schemes within the reach of current experimental technology in solid-state environment. We then show that when the technique is employed to an extended coupled-cavity scheme involving a multi-level atom, arbitrary temporal superposition of single photons can be engineered in a deterministic way.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, minor revision

    As diabetes and obesity rates continue to climb at astronomical rates in the Middle East, future generations are at an even greater risk for diabetes and the associated complications. Many factors are at play and it is clear that creative solutions are needed to retool provider resources in the Middle East towards prevention of diabetes and its complications while leveraging technology to maximize outreach within the accepted cultural norms. Only by building the capacity to address the current diabetes burden as well focusing on prevention for the future, can Middle East countries create a strong infrastructure for a successful future
