    Incorporating machine reliability issue and backlogging into the EMQ model - Part II: Random breakdown occurring in inventory piling time

    This paper presents the second part of a research which is concerned with incorporating machine reliability issues and backlogging into the economic manufacturing quantity (EMQ) model. It may be noted that in a production system when back-ordering is permitted, a random machine failure can take place in either backorder filling stage or in on-hand inventory piling time. The first part of the research investigates the effect of a machine failure occurring in backorder filling stage on the optimal lot-size; while this paper (the second part of the research) studies the effect of random breakdown happening in inventory piling time on the optimal batch size for such an imperfect EMQ model. The objective is to determine the optimal replenishment lot-size that minimizes the overall productioninventory costs. Mathematical modelling is used and the renewal reward theorem is employed to cope with the variable cycle length. Hessian matrix equations are utilized to prove convexity of the cost function. Then, the optimal lot size for such a real-life imperfect manufacturing system is derived. Practitioners and managers in the field can adopt these replenishment policies to establish their own robust production plan accordingly

    Intraprostatic injection of botulinum toxin type- A relieves bladder outlet obstruction in human and induces prostate apoptosis in dogs

    BACKGROUND: With the increasing interest with botulinum toxin – A (BTX-A) application in the lower urinary tract, we investigated the BTX-A effects on the canine prostate and also in men with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). METHODS: Transperineal injection into the prostate using transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) was performed throughout the study. Saline with or without 100 U of BTX-A was injected into mongrel dogs prostate. One or 3 months later, the prostate was harvested for morphologic and apoptotic study. In addition, eight BPH patients refractory to α-blockers were treated with ultrasound guided intraprostatic injection of 200 U of BTX-A. RESULTS: In the BTX-A treated dogs, atrophy and diffuse apoptosis was observed with H&E stain and TUNEL stain at 1 and 3 months. Clinically, the mean prostate volume, symptom score, and quality of life index were significantly reduced by 18.8%, 73.1%, and 61.5% respectively. Maximal flow rate significantly increased by 72.0%. CONCLUSION: Intraprostatic BTX-A injection induces prostate apotosis in dogs and relieves BOO in humans. It is therefore a promising alternative treatment for refractory BOO due to BPH

    The Known Distribution of an Invasive Lizard, the Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei Duméril & Bibron, 1837), in Taiwan

    The Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) has become an invasive species in some parts of the Americas and in some localities in the Pacific region. In Taiwan A. sagrei was recorded for the first time in 2000 in Santzepu, southwestern Taiwan, and was subsequently recorded in Chisintang, eastern Taiwan, during 2006. For future monitoring and research, we describe the known distribution of A. sagrei in Taiwan by plotting GPS coordinates of localities where A. sagrei was observed during surveys (conducted on an ad hoc basis since this species was first discovered in Taiwan) or where specimens have been collected on GIS User Community aerial photographs that were divided into 100 x 100-m grids. We recorded this invasive lizard in southwestern Taiwan in an area spanning approximately 237 ha and in an approximately 8-ha area in eastern Taiwan. Since A. sagrei is easily spread by human activities, and because not all areas could be thoroughly surveyed, we conclude that the current actual distribution of A. sagrei in Taiwan is probably more extensive than shown. We believe that the eradication of A. sagrei in Taiwan through removal is unrealistic, and propose that ongoing efforts should focus on managing this species

    Women with endometriosis have higher comorbidities: Analysis of domestic data in Taiwan

    AbstractEndometriosis, defined by the presence of viable extrauterine endometrial glands and stroma, can grow or bleed cyclically, and possesses characteristics including a destructive, invasive, and metastatic nature. Since endometriosis may result in pelvic inflammation, adhesion, chronic pain, and infertility, and can progress to biologically malignant tumors, it is a long-term major health issue in women of reproductive age. In this review, we analyze the Taiwan domestic research addressing associations between endometriosis and other diseases. Concerning malignant tumors, we identified four studies on the links between endometriosis and ovarian cancer, one on breast cancer, two on endometrial cancer, one on colorectal cancer, and one on other malignancies, as well as one on associations between endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome, one on links with migraine headache, three on links with pelvic inflammatory diseases, four on links with infertility, four on links with obesity, four on links with chronic liver disease, four on links with rheumatoid arthritis, four on links with chronic renal disease, five on links with diabetes mellitus, and five on links with cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.). The data available to date support that women with endometriosis might be at risk of some chronic illnesses and certain malignancies, although we consider the evidence for some comorbidities to be of low quality, for example, the association between colon cancer and adenomyosis/endometriosis. We still believe that the risk of comorbidity might be higher in women with endometriosis than that we supposed before. More research is needed to determine whether women with endometriosis are really at risk of these comorbidities

    Fibrosis is a hallmark of atrial structural remodeling. The main aim of this study was to investigate the role of micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) in the modulation of fibrotic molecular mechanisms in response to hypoxic conditions, which may mediate atrial fibrosis. Under a condition of hypoxia induced by a hypoxia chamber, miRNA arrays were used to identify the specific miRNAs associated with the modulation of fibrotic genes. Luciferase assay, real-time polymerase chain reaction, immunofluorescence and Western blotting were used to investigate the effects of miRNAs on the expressions of the fibrotic markers collagen I and III (COL1A, COL3A) and phosphorylation levels of the stress kinase c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway in a cultured HL-1 atrial cardiomyocytes cell line. COL1A and COL3A were found to be the direct regulatory targets of miR-let-7a, miR-let-7e and miR-133a in hypoxic atrial cardiac cells in vitro. The expressions of COL1A and COL3A were influenced by treatment with miRNA mimic and antagomir while hypoxia-induced collagen expression was inhibited by the delivery of miR-133a, miR-let-7a or miR-let-7e. The JNK pathway was critical in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrosis. The JNK inhibitor SP600125 increased miRNA expressions and repressed the fibrotic markers COL1A and COL3A. In conclusion, MiRNA let-7a, miR-let-7e and miR-133a play important roles in hypoxia-related atrial fibrosis by inhibiting collagen expression and post-transcriptional repression by the JNK pathway. These novel findings may lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies

    Elongation of Axon Extension for Human iPSC-Derived Retinal Ganglion Cells by a Nano-Imprinted Scaffold

    Optic neuropathies, such as glaucoma and Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) lead to retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss and therefore motivate the application of transplantation technique into disease therapy. However, it is a challenge to direct the transplanted optic nerve axons to the correct location of the retina. The use of appropriate scaffold can promote the proper axon growth. Recently, biocompatible materials have been integrated into the medical field, such as tissue engineering and reconstruction of damaged tissues or organs. We, herein, utilized nano-imprinting to create a scaffold mimicking the in vitro tissue microarchitecture, and guiding the axonal growth and orientation of the RGCs. We observed that the robust, long, and organized axons of human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived RGCs projected axially along the scaffold grooves. The RGCs grown on the scaffold expressed the specific neuronal biomarkers indicating their proper functionality. Thus, based on our in vitro culture system, this device can be useful for the neurophysiological analysis and transplantation for ophthalmic neuropathy treatment

    Can mesenchymal stem cell lysate reverse aging?

    Recent findings regarding uses of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-lysate on weight loss and improved glucose tolerance in mice on a high-fat diet suggest an encouraging possibility of using MSC lysate for an anti-aging intervention in humans. However, weight loss and lipopenia during late life can be as life-threatening as hyperglycemia during early adulthood. For this 3-year lifelong experiment, a total of 92 rats were randomized into the vehicle-injected group (F=22; M=24) and the MSC lysate injected group (F=22, M=24). We examined longevity, spontaneous locomotor activity, and body composition in rats maintained on a normal diet and received an intermittent treatment of human adipose-derived MSC lysate (3 times a week, 11 times a month given every second month), starting at 12 months of age until natural death. In substantiating previous knowledge regarding the effects of long-term MSC lysate treatments on fat loss and insulin resistance, the present findings also highlighted a shortened average lifespan, a longer inactive time, and a greater bone loss with a relative increase of lean mass in MSC lysate rats with respect to controls. Conclusion: Our data suggest that MSC lysate treatments stimulate disparity in tissue development and produce a cachexia-like effect to decrease longevity

    Tumor cell expression of podoplanin correlates with nodal metastasis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

    Podoplanin is a mucin-like glycoprotein expressed in the lymphatic endothelium. It has been suggested to play a role in lymphangiogenesis, since podoplanin deficient mice were found to have dilated malfunctioning lymphatic vessels and lymphedema. High podoplanin expression in tumor cells was found to correlate with lymph node metastasis and poor clinical outcome in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, the prognostic significance of podoplanin expression in esophageal SCC remains unexplored. Herein, we studied podoplanin expression in 59 patients who underwent surgical resection of esophageal SCC, with 43 of them preceded by preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). We found that high podoplanin expression strongly correlated with clinical nodal metastasis (cN1; p=0.0063), which was associated with short survival (p=0.012). However, there was no direct association between high podoplanin expression and short survival. We also found that lymphatic vessel invasion in the resected esophagus was strongly associated with pathological nodal metastasis (pN1; p=0.00092). Our results suggest that podoplanin could also play a role in tumor aggressiveness in esophageal SCC, as well as in oral SCC
