Electromagnetic energy and energy flows in photonic crystals made of arrays of parallel dielectric cylinders
We consider the electromagnetic propagation in two-dimensional photonic
crystals, formed by parallel dielectric cylinders embedded a uniform medium.
The frequency band structure is computed using the standard plane-wave
expansion method, and the corresponding eigne-modes are obtained subsequently.
The optical flows of the eigen-modes are calculated by a direct computation
approach, and several averaging schemes of the energy current are discussed.
The results are compared to those obtained by the usual approach that employs
the group velocity calculation. We consider both the case in which the
frequency lies within passing band and the situation in which the frequency is
in the range of a partial bandgap. The agreements and discrepancies between
various averaging schemes and the group velocity approach are discussed in
detail. The results indicate the group velocity can be obtained by appropriate
averaging method.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figure
Inhibiting tryptophan metabolism enhances interferon therapy in kidney cancer.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is increasing in incidence, and a complete cure remains elusive. While immune-checkpoint antibodies are promising, interferon-based immunotherapy has been disappointing. Tryptophan metabolism, which produces immunosuppressive metabolites, is enhanced in RCC. Here we show indolamine-2,3-dioxygenase-1 (IDO1) expression, a kynurenine pathway enzyme, is increased not only in tumor cells but also in the microenvironment of human RCC compared to normal kidney tissues. Neither kynurenine metabolites nor IDO inhibitors affected the survival or proliferation of human RCC or murine renal cell adenocarcinoma (RENCA) cells in vitro. However, interferon-gamma (IFNγ) induced high levels of IDO1 in both RCC and RENCA cells, concomitant with enhanced kynurenine levels in conditioned media. Induction of IDO1 by IFNα was weaker than by IFNγ. Neither the IDO1 inhibitor methyl-thiohydantoin-DL-tryptophan (MTH-trp) nor IFNα alone inhibited RENCA tumor growth, however the combination of MTH-trp and IFNα reduced tumor growth compared to IFNα. Thus, the failure of IFNα therapy for human RCC is likely due to its inability to overcome the immunosuppressive environment created by increased IDO1. Based on our data, and given that IDO inhibitors are already in clinical trials for other malignancies, IFNα therapy with an IDO inhibitor should be revisited for RCC
Infall and Outflow around the HH 212 protostellar system
HH 212 is a highly collimated jet discovered in H2 powered by a young Class 0
source, IRAS 05413-0104, in the L1630 cloud of Orion. We have mapped around it
in 1.33 mm continuum, 12CO (), 13CO (), C18O (), and SO
() emission at \arcs{2.5} resolution with the
Submillimeter Array. A dust core is seen in the continuum around the source. A
flattened envelope is seen in C18O around the source in the equator
perpendicular to the jet axis, with its inner part seen in 13CO. The structure
and kinematics of the envelope can be roughly reproduced by a simple edge-on
disk model with both infall and rotation. In this model, the density of the
disk is assumed to have a power-law index of or -2, as found in other
low-mass envelopes. The envelope seems dynamically infalling toward the source
with slow rotation because the kinematics is found to be roughly consistent
with a free fall toward the source plus a rotation of a constant specific
angular momentum. A 12CO outflow is seen surrounding the H2 jet, with a narrow
waist around the source. Jetlike structures are also seen in 12CO near the
source aligned with the H2 jet at high velocities. The morphological
relationship between the H2 jet and the 12CO outflow, and the kinematics of the
12CO outflow along the jet axis are both consistent with those seen in a
jet-driven bow shock model. SO emission is seen around the source and the H2
knotty shocks in the south, tracing shocked emission around them.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, Accepted by the Ap
Impact of flood disasters on Taiwan in the last quarter century
Copyright © Springer 2006. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11069-005-4667-7The increasing natural disasters, especially floods during the last quarter century, are raising the economic losses in Taiwan. The most severe hazard in Taiwan is flooding induced by typhoons and storms in summer and autumn. By comparing the rivers around the world, the ones in Taiwan have the steepest slopes, the largest discharge per unit drainage area, and the shortest time of concentrations. Rapid urbanization without proper land uses managements usually worsen the flood problems. Consequently, flood hazards mitigation has become the most essential task for Taiwan to deal with. Although the government keeps improving flood defense structures, the flood damage grows continuously. In this article, possible flood mitigation strategies are identified for coping with complex environmental and social decisions with flood risk involved.National Science and Technology Center

Self-DUal SU(3) Chern-Simons Higgs Systems
We explore self-dual Chern-Simons Higgs systems with the local and
global symmetries where the matter field lies in the adjoint
representation. We show that there are three degenerate vacua of different
symmetries and study the unbroken symmetry and particle spectrum in each
vacuum. We classify the self-dual configurations into three types and study
their properties.Comment: Columbia Preprint CU-TP-635, 19 page
Ellipsometry noise spectrum, suspension transfer function measurement and closed-loop control of the suspension system in the Q & A experiment
The Q & A experiment, aiming at the detection of vacuum birefringence
predicted by quantum electrodynamics, consists mainly of a suspended 3.5 m
Fabry-Perot cavity, a rotating permanent dipole magnet and an ellipsometer. The
2.3 T magnet can rotate up to 10 rev/s, introducing an ellipticity signal at
twice the rotation frequency. The X-pendulum gives a good isolation ratio for
seismic noise above its main resonant frequency 0.3 Hz. At present, the
ellipsometry noise decreases with frequency, from 1*10^{-5} rad Hz^{-1/2} at 5
Hz, 2*10^{-6} rad Hz^{-1/2} at 20 Hz to 5*10^{-7} rad Hz^{-1/2} at 40 Hz. The
shape of the noise spectrum indicates possible improvement can be made by
further reducing the movement between the cavity mirrors. From the preliminary
result of yaw motion alignment control, it can be seen that some peaks due to
yaw motion of the cavity mirror was suppressed. In this paper, we first give a
schematic view of the Q & A experiment, and then present the measurement of
transfer function of the compound X-pendulum-double pendulum suspension. A
closed-loop control was carried out to verify the validity of the measured
transfer functions. The ellipsometry noise spectra with and without yaw
alignment control and the newest improvement is presented.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, presented in 6th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on

Differential membrane binding of α/β-peptide foldamers: implications for cellular delivery and mitochondrial targeting
The intrinsic pathway of apoptosis is regulated by the Bcl-2 family of proteins. Inhibition of the anti-apoptotic members represents a strategy to induce apoptotic cell death in cancer cells. We have measured the membrane binding properties of a series of peptides, including modified α/β-peptides, designed to exhibit enhanced membrane permeability to allow cell entry and improved access for engagement of Bcl-2 family members. The peptide cargo is based on the pro-apoptotic protein Bim, which interacts with all anti-apoptotic proteins to initiate apoptosis. The α/β-peptides contained cyclic β-amino acid residues designed to increase their stability and membrane-permeability. Dual polarisation interferometry was used to study the binding of each peptide to two different model membrane systems designed to mimic either the plasma membrane or the outer mitochondrial membrane. The impact of each peptide on the model membrane structure was also investigated, and the results demonstrated that the modified peptides had increased affinity for the mitochondrial membrane and significantly altered the structure of the bilayer. The results also showed that the presence of an RRR motif significantly enhanced the ability of the peptides to bind to and insert into the mitochondrial membrane mimic, and provide insights into the role of selective membrane targeting of peptides
Sonic crystal lenses that obey Lensmaker's formula
This paper presents a theoretical study of the phenomenon of acoustic imaging
by sonic crystals, which are made of two-dimensional regular arrays of rigid
cylinders placed in parallel in air. The scattering of acoustic waves is
computed using the standard multiple scattering theory, and the band structures
are computed by the plane-wave expansion method. It is shown that properly
arranged arrays not only can behave as acoustic lenses, but also the focusing
effect can be well described by Lensmaker's formula. Possible applications are
also discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
On the B\"acklund Transformation for the Moyal Korteweg-de Vries Hierarchy
We study the B\"acklund symmetry for the Moyal Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)
hierarchy based on the Kuperschmidt-Wilson Theorem associated with second
Gelfand-Dickey structure with respect to the Moyal bracket, which generalizes
the result of Adler for the ordinary KdV.Comment: 9 pages, Revte
The Chern-Simons Coefficient in Supersymmetric Non-abelian Chern-Simons Higgs Theories
By taking into account the effect of the would be Chern-Simons term, we
calculate the quantum correction to the Chern-Simons coefficient in
supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories with matter fields in the
fundamental representation of SU(n). Because of supersymmetry, the corrections
in the symmetric and Higgs phases are identical. In particular, the correction
is vanishing for N=3 supersymmetric Chern-Simons Higgs theories. The result
should be quite general, and have important implication for the more
interesting case when the Higgs is in the adjoint representation.Comment: more references and explanation about rgularization dpendence are
