Reply to comments on "General analysis of the stability of superposed fluids"
Previous results by Plesset and Hsieh on the effects of compressibility for Rayleigh–Taylor instability are shown to be valid, and an alternative brief deduction is given
Taiwan`s domestic politics since the presidential elections 2000
This paper looks at several developments that have taken place in domestic politics on Taiwan since the election of Chen Shui-bian as president of the Republic of China on Taiwan in 1998. After discussing the political successes and failures of the incumbent Chen administration, it analyses its strategy in dealing with the consequences of divided government. Some of the problems encountered by the administration are traced to changes in the political system of Taiwan that took place during the presidency of Lee Teng-hui. The paper also deals with the new role of the president as chief executive and functioning of the legislative. Finally, the reaction of the major political parties to the changes in the political situation is explored. --Taiwan,domestic politics, divided government, political system, party system,Chen Shui-bian,Lee Teng-hui
Delaboring Republicanism
This article criticizes radical labor republicanism on republican grounds. I show that its demand for universal workplace democracy via workers’ cooperatives conflicts with republican freedom along three different dimensions: first, freedom to choose an occupation…and not to choose one; second, freedom within the very cooperatives that workers are to democratically govern; and third, freedom within the newly proletarian state. In the conclusion, I ask whether these criticisms apply, at least in part, to the more modest, incrementalist strand of labor republicanism. To the extent that they do, delaboring republicanism might be the best response
Immotthia atrograna (Dacampiaceae, Ascomycota), a new for Ukraine fungicolous fungus from the Carpathians
The paper reports first records of new for Ukraine genus and species of fungicolous fungi, Immotthia atrograna (Cooke et Ellis) M.E. Barr. All collections were made in old-growth forests within protected areas in the Ukrainian Carpathians during recent mycological surveys. The fungus was found to be associated with two xylariaceous species, Annulohypoxylon cohaerens (Pers.) Y.M. Ju, J.D. Rogers et H.M. Hsieh and A. multiforme (Fr.) Y.M. Ju, J.D. Rogers et H.M. Hsieh. Diagnostic description, nomenclature data, geographical distribution and original illustrations for both sexual and asexual morphs of the reported species are provided. Morphologically similar fungicolous fungi are briefly reviewed and compared

The Western Chin Poet Chang Hsieh
Chang Hsieh lived in the latter half of the third century, contemporary with the poets Lu Chi, P'an Yüeh and Tso Ssu. Outside of the ten "Miscellaneous Poems" and one "Historical Poem" contained in the Wen hsüan, however, nothing remains of his work except a few poems and fragments of a collection of rhymed pieces of various types originally in ten or more sections. Yet, within the general poetic fashion of the time which sought primarily for elegance and extravagance of expression, even these few works reveal characteristics of their own. Chang Hsieh's works excel in new modes of expression and fresh turns of phrase, particularly in his descriptions of landscapes. In addition they contain phrases which bear a striking resemblance to the works of T'ao Yüan-ming who lived some hundred years later. This resemblance does not end with a similarity of isolated phrases. Like T'ao Yüan-ming after him, Chang Hsieh was attempting to give a more direct expression to human thoughts and emotions which had heretofore been hampered by the bonds of formalism, and to achieve a simpler and more forceful expression of poetic spirit. Hence the mastery with which he employed the impromptu type of poem which, for lack of a more appropriate classification, is referred to as "Miscellaneous Poems" (tsa-shih). Thus although Chang Hsieh's works cannot compare in complexity of thought and expression with those of T'ao Yüan-ming, they may be counted as one of the sources of inspiration which T'ao Yüan-ming later drew upon
Reply to Comments of P. W. Smith, Jr.
In his comments on this subject, Smith has put
emphasis on the special nature of the plane-wave
solution in acoustic problems. It is perhaps unnecessary
to defend the importance of the plane-wave
solution in a linear theory
Single-Dirac-Cone topological surface states in TlBiSe2 class of Topological Insulators
We have investigated several strong spin-orbit coupling ternary chalcogenides
related to the (Pb,Sn)Te series of compounds. Our first-principles calculations
predict the low temperature rhombohedral ordered phase in TlBiTe2, TlBiSe2, and
TlSbX2 (X=Te, Se, S) to be topologically Kane-Mele Z2 = -1 nontrivial. We
identify the specific surface termination that realizes the single Dirac cone
through first-principles surface state computations. This termination minimizes
effects of dangling bonds making it favorable for photoemission (ARPES)
experiments. Our analysis predicts that thin films of these materials would
harbor novel 2D quantum spin Hall states, and support odd-parity topological
superconductivity. For a related work also see arXiv:1003.2615v1. Experimental
ARPES results will be published elsewhere.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett. (2010). Submitted March
