Safe Haven for Salvadorans in the Context of Contemporary International Law--A Case Study in Equivocation
This Article analyzes the basis for safe-haven programs for refugees fleeing war and civil strife under contemporary principles of international law. The authors trace the development of safe-haven programs in the United States and offer an analysis and critique of the Temporary Protected Status program created by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990. Focusing on the struggle to gain safe haven for refugees from El Salvador, the authors review the United States government\u27s historical use of safe haven programs as a political tool. Finally, the Article looks at how other countries have responded to refugee crises and suggests a policy for the United States that is consistent with international refugee law

Analysis of micromixers and biocidal coatings on water-treatment membranes to minimize biofouling.
Biofouling, the unwanted growth of biofilms on a surface, of water-treatment membranes negatively impacts in desalination and water treatment. With biofouling there is a decrease in permeate production, degradation of permeate water quality, and an increase in energy expenditure due to increased cross-flow pressure needed. To date, a universal successful and cost-effect method for controlling biofouling has not been implemented. The overall goal of the work described in this report was to use high-performance computing to direct polymer, material, and biological research to create the next generation of water-treatment membranes. Both physical (micromixers - UV-curable epoxy traces printed on the surface of a water-treatment membrane that promote chaotic mixing) and chemical (quaternary ammonium groups) modifications of the membranes for the purpose of increasing resistance to biofouling were evaluated. Creation of low-cost, efficient water-treatment membranes helps assure the availability of fresh water for human use, a growing need in both the U. S. and the world
Effects of alpha particle radiation on gene expression in human pulmonary epithelial cells
The general public receives approximately half of its exposure to natural radiation through alpha (α)-particles from radon ( 222Rn) gas and its decay progeny. Epidemiological studies have found a positive correlation between exposure to 222Rn and lung carcinogenesis. An understanding of the transcriptional responses involved in these effects remains limited. In this study, genomic technology was employed to mine for subtle changes in gene expression that may be representative of an altered physiological state. Human lung epithelial cells were exposed to 0, 0.03, 0.3 and 0.9Gy of α-particle radiation. Microarray analysis was employed to determine transcript expression levels 4h and 24h after exposure. A total of 590 genes were shown to be differentially expressed in the α-particle radiated samples (false discovery rate (FDR)≤0.05). Sub-set of these transcripts were time-responsive, dose-responsive an
