    Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging are efficient methods of measuring spectral reflectance at high spatial resolution. This non-invasive technique has been applied to the imaging of paintings over the last 20 years. PRISMS (Portable Remote Imaging System for Multispectral Scanning) was designed specifically for imaging wall paintings. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a low coherence interferometric technique capable of fast non-invasive imaging of subsurface microstructure. This paper shows the first application of in situ OCT imaging of a wall painting. The combination of PRISMS and OCT gives information on the varnish and paint layer structure, pigment identification, the state of degradation of the paint and varnish layers and informing curators on the painting schemes and techniques

    We consider the generalized St\"ormer Problem that includes the electromagnetic and gravitational forces on a charged dust grain near a planet. For dust grains a typical charge to mass ratio is such that neither force can be neglected. Including the gravitational force gives rise to stable circular orbits that encircle that plane entirely above/below the equatorial plane. The effects of the different forces are discussed in detail. A modified 3rd Kepler's law is found and analyzed for dust grains.Comment: 21 pages LaTeX, 12 figure

    Kinematic study of flight telerobotic servicer configuration issues

    Several factors, such as body size and shape, and the number of arms and their placement, will influence how well the Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) is suited to its potential duties for the Space Station Program. In order to examine the implications of these configuration options, eight specific 2, 3, and 4 armed FTS configuration were simulated and used to perform a Space Station Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) exchange. The strengths and weaknesses of each configuration were evaluated. Although most of the configurations examined were able to perform the exchange, several of the 3 and 4 arm configurations had operational advantages. The results obtained form these simulations are specific to the assumptions associated with the ORU exchange scenario examined. However, they do illustrate the general interrelationships and sensitivities which need to be understood

    In living cells, molecular motors convert chemical energy into mechanical work. Its thermodynamic energy efficiency, i.e. the ratio of output mechanical work to input chemical energy, is usually high. However, using two-state models, we found the motion of molecular motors is loosely coupled to the chemical cycle. Only part of the input energy can be converted into mechanical work. Others is dissipated into environment during substeps without contributions to the macro scale unidirectional movement
