The unreasonable effectiveness of equilibrium-like theory for interpreting non-equilibrium experiments
There has been great interest in applying the results of statistical
mechanics to single molecule experiements. Recent work has highlighted
so-called non-equilibrium work-energy relations and Fluctuation Theorems which
take on an equilibrium-like (time independent) form. Here I give a very simple
heuristic example where an equilibrium result (the barometric law for colloidal
particles) arises from theory describing the {\em thermodynamically}
non-equilibrium phenomenon of a single colloidal particle falling through
solution due to gravity. This simple result arises from the fact that the
particle, even while falling, is in {\em mechanical} equilibrium (gravitational
force equal the viscous drag force) at every instant. The results are
generalized by appeal to the central limit theorem. The resulting time
independent equations that hold for thermodynamically non-equilibrium (and even
non-stationary) processes offer great possibilities for rapid determination of
thermodynamic parameters from single molecule experiments.Comment: 6 page
Actively stressed marginal networks
We study the effects of motor-generated stresses in disordered three
dimensional fiber networks using a combination of a mean-field, effective
medium theory, scaling analysis and a computational model. We find that motor
activity controls the elasticity in an anomalous fashion close to the point of
marginal stability by coupling to critical network fluctuations. We also show
that motor stresses can stabilize initially floppy networks, extending the
range of critical behavior to a broad regime of network connectivities below
the marginal point. Away from this regime, or at high stress, motors give rise
to a linear increase in stiffness with stress. Finally, we demonstrate that our
results are captured by a simple, constitutive scaling relation highlighting
the important role of non-affine strain fluctuations as a susceptibility to
motor stress.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Kinetics and mechanism of the formation of water cluster ions from O2(plus) and H2O in He, Ar, N2, and O2 at 296 K
The reaction sequence leading from O2(+) to H3O(+)-H2O was examined in He, Ar, N2 and O2 carrier gases in a flowing afterglow system. The rate constants for the reactions were measured and the kinetic analysis for their determination is presented. For M = N2, two new steps involving the formation and reaction of O2(+)-N2 were proposed and examined. The rate constants are discussed and compared with other experimental values
Study of the phenomenon of barrenness in corn
TypescriptM.S. University of Missouri 1911Barrenness in corn is one of the most commonly observed phenomena exhibited by this prominent cereal, and one of the least understood. Why various, seemingly growthy and hardy stalks of corn fail to produce grain has been a source of wonder and comment to both practical farmers and agricultural investigators as well. Strange as it may seem, however, there has been practically no work done to discover why the maize plant, or any other grain normally bisexual, should be sterile. Many theories have been advanced to explain the phenomenon such as lack of food, lack of constitutional vigor, thickness of planting, and inbreeding. It has also been suggested that the condition might be hereditary, but this has in the main been generally rejected as unsound, thinking that since a barren stalk produces no seed it must surely breed itself out. Whether or not any or all of these theories will stand the test of accurate experimentation remains to be seen. On the other hand it is an undoubted fact that the barren tendency still persists in all sub-species and varieties of corn. Farmers realize their detrimental effect and are continually asking for a method whereby they may be eliminated from their fields. Nearly all attempts to eliminate them have failed so far because it is very hard to say a stalk will be barren at tasseling time and once past that time the damage is done and any interference is more than useless. Seeing then that the subject has an economic bearing as well as a purely scientific interest, what are the factors that influence barrenness in corn? The object of this work was to make a study of barren stalks of corn to discover the causes of barrenness, if possible, and to find out the factors which influence barrenness in any way.Includes bibliographical reference
African-American Veterinary Students at Kansas State University (1910-1950)
Kansas State University was one of the most important veterinary colleges to educate African-American veterinarians before Tuskegee Institute (now University) established a veterinary college in 1945. Twenty-two African-American veterinary graduates may not seem like a very large number. However, during a period when becoming a veterinarian was almost never considered a possibility by the African-American community, Kansas State provided an important beacon of hope. Biographical information about several graduates is provided
