Intersections of Soundscapes and Conservation: Ecologies of Sound in Naturecultures

An ecosystem is a reflection of coupled human and natural systems. A key, and less understood, interaction is with sound. Paralleling development in landscape ecology, soundscape ecology provides a diversity of measures of spatial and temporal variation in sound. Here we bridge disciplines to describe variation in soundscape measures across a gradient of novel to natural landscapes. Soundscape measures studied varied as a function of forest area but not matrix type, and season but not time. Results suggest future directions and allow practitioners to better identify management options that mitigate the impacts of noise on natural and human systems.

Influence of neighboring small sequence variants on functional impact prediction

Baasner J-S, Howard D, Pucker B. Influence of neighboring small sequence variants on functional impact prediction. bioRxiv. 2019.Once a suitable reference sequence is generated, genomic differences within a species are often assessed by re-sequencing. Variant calling processes can reveal all differences between two strains, accessions, genotypes, or individuals. These variants can be enriched with predictions about their functional implications based on available structural annotations. Although these predictions on a per variant basis are often accurate, some challenging cases require the simultaneous incorporation of multiple adjacent variants into this prediction process. Examples are neighboring variants which modify each others' functional impact. Neighborhood-Aware Variant Impact Predictor (NAVIP) considers all variants within a given protein coding sequence when predicting the functional consequences. NAVIP is freely available on github: https://github.com/bpucker/NAVIP

Discovery of novel reductive elimination pathway for 10-hydroxywarfarin

Coumadin (R/S-warfarin) anticoagulant therapy is highly efficacious in preventing the formation of blood clots; however, significant inter-individual variations in response risks over or under dosing resulting in adverse bleeding events or ineffective therapy, respectively. Levels of pharmacologically active forms of the drug and metabolites depend on a diversity of metabolic pathways. Cytochromes P450 play a major role in oxidizing R- and S-warfarin to 6-, 7-, 8-, 10-, and 4\u27-hydroxywarfarin, and warfarin alcohols form through a minor metabolic pathway involving reduction at the C11 position. We hypothesized that due to structural similarities with warfarin, hydroxywarfarins undergo reduction, possibly impacting their pharmacological activity and elimination. We modeled reduction reactions and carried out experimental steady-state reactions with human liver cytosol for conversion o

    Neighborhood-Aware Variant Impact Predictor (NAVIP)

Current annotation tools such as ANNOVAR and SnpEff misannotate a very few challenging cases such as when Indels cause frameshifts or compensate one another, causing it to not show the full mutation. Neighborhood-Aware Variant Impact Predictor (NAVIP) is a program intended to fix these problems by identifying these regions and correctly labeling them. This project tests the effectiveness of NAVIP and investigates co-occuring varients where the original amino acid is preserved from the second mutation. We identify multiple occurrences of the co-occuring varients in Arabidopsis thaliana and discuss the possible reasons for these. This work was performed at Bielefeld University, Center for Biotechnology, Germany

The Chronicles: A Living History Project

    No full text
Poster Presentation with Video The Chronicles is a living history project that was envisioned by professor and veteran Geoffrey Jensen. The project will focus on veterans, specifically World War II veterans that are in Yavapai County. The project will interview and record participants through audio and visual methods. The types of questions that will be asked will explore the veterans’ history and how their service affected them before, during, and after they finished. These interviews will be available to the public through ERAU Prescott Library’s Scholarly Commons. The participants, the community and Embry-Riddle as a whole will benefit from the project as participants will have a safe median to share their experiences, the community, including researchers, will have the opportunity to explore the courageous stories that these men and women share, and ERAU will have the pride of knowing that they provided the platform for these veterans to share their stories. For the Presentation for Discovery Day, The Chronicles will show clips from its first interview. Ignite Grant Awar
