    Wide parameter search for isolated pulsars using the Hough transform

    We use the Hough transform to analyze data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers, to look for gravitational waves from isolated pulsars. We search over the whole sky and over a large range of frequencies and spin-down parameters. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semi-coherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique.     A Catalog of Background Stars Reddened by Dust in the Taurus Dark Clouds

    Normal field stars located behind dense clouds are a valuable resource in interstellar astrophysics, as they provide continua in which to study phenomena such as gas-phase and solid-state absorption features, interstellar extinction and polarization. This paper reports the results of a search for highly reddened stars behind the Taurus Dark Cloud complex. We use the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Point Source Catalog to survey a 50 sq deg area of the cloud to a limiting magnitude of K = 10.0. Photometry in the 1.2-2.2 micron passbands from 2MASS is combined with photometry at longer infrared wavelengths (3.6-12 micron) from the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Infrared Astronomical Satellite to provide effective discrimination between reddened field stars and young stellar objects (YSOs) embedded in the cloud. Our final catalog contains 248 confirmed or probable background field stars, together with estimates of their total visual extinctions, which span the range 2-29 mag. We also identify the 2MASS source J04292083+2742074 (IRAS 04262+2735) as a previously unrecognized candidate YSO, based on the presence of infrared emission greatly in excess of that predicted for a normal reddened photosphere at wavelengths >5 microns

    The Efficiency of Grain Alignment in Dense Interstellar Clouds: A Reassessment of Constraints from Near Infrared Polarization

    A detailed study of interstellar polarization efficiency toward molecular clouds is used to attempt discrimination between grain alignment mechanisms in dense regions of the ISM. Background field stars are used to probe polarization efficiency in quiescent regions of dark clouds, yielding a dependence on visual extinction well-represented by a power law. No significant change in this behavior is observed in the transition region between the diffuse outer layers and dense inner regions of clouds, where icy mantles are formed, and we conclude that mantle formation has little or no effect on the efficiency of grain alignment. Young stellar objects generally exhibit greater polarization efficiency compared with field stars at comparable extinctions, displaying enhancements by factors of up to 6. Of the proposed alignment mechanisms, that based on radiative torques appears best able to explain the data. The attenuated external radiation field accounts for the observed polarization in quiescent regions, and radiation from the embedded stars themselves may enhance alignment in the lines of sight to YSOs. Enhancements in polarization efficiency observed in the ice features toward several YSOs are of greatest significance, as they demonstrate efficient alignment in cold molecular clouds associated with star formation

    Spectropolarimetry of the 3.4 micron absorption feature in NGC 1068

    In order to test the silicate-core/organic-mantle model of galactic interstellar dust, we have performed spectropolarimetry of the 3.4 micron C-H bond stretch that is characteristic of aliphatic hydrocarbons, using the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, as a bright, dusty background source. Polarization calculations show that, if the grains in NGC 1068 had the properties assigned by the core-mantle model to dust in the galactic diffuse ISM, they would cause a detectable rise in polarization over the 3.4 micron feature. No such increase is observed. We discuss modifications to the basic core-mantle model, such as changes in grain size or the existence of additional non-hydrocarbon aligned grain populations, which could better fit the observational evidence. However, we emphasize that the absence of polarization over the 3.4 micron band in NGC 1068 - and, indeed, in every line of sight examined to date - can be readily explained by a population of small, unaligned carbonaceous grains with no physical connection to the silicates.Comment: ApJ, accepte

    Improving Sequential Determinantal Point Processes for Supervised Video Summarization

    It is now much easier than ever before to produce videos. While the ubiquitous video data is a great source for information discovery and extraction, the computational challenges are unparalleled. Automatically summarizing the videos has become a substantial need for browsing, searching, and indexing visual content. This paper is in the vein of supervised video summarization using sequential determinantal point process (SeqDPP), which models diversity by a probabilistic distribution. We improve this model in two folds. In terms of learning, we propose a large-margin algorithm to address the exposure bias problem in SeqDPP. In terms of modeling, we design a new probabilistic distribution such that, when it is integrated into SeqDPP, the resulting model accepts user input about the expected length of the summary. Moreover, we also significantly extend a popular video summarization dataset by 1) more egocentric videos, 2) dense user annotations, and 3) a refined evaluation scheme. We conduct extensive experiments on this dataset (about 60 hours of videos in total) and compare our approach to several competitive baselines

Systemic deficiencies are identified. These tended to undermine the effectiveness of direct British rule. This study also reveals, in the context of legal and constitutional continuity, unresolved tensions between modernity and tradition. The political stability of the island was damaged and the possibility of continued British possession was threatened

    Removing non-stationary, non-harmonic external interference from gravitational wave interferometer data

    We describe a procedure to identify and remove a class of non-stationary and non-harmonic interference lines from gravitational wave interferometer data. These lines appear to be associated with the external electricity main supply, but their amplitudes are non-stationary and they do not appear at harmonics of the fundamental supply frequency. We find an empirical model able to represent coherently all the non-harmonic lines we have found in the power spectrum, in terms of an assumed reference signal of the primary supply input signal. If this signal is not available then it can be reconstructed from the same data by making use of the coherent line removal algorithm that we have described elsewhere. All these lines are broadened by frequency changes of the supply signal, and they corrupt significant frequency ranges of the power spectrum. The physical process that generates this interference is so far unknown, but it is highly non-linear and non-stationary. Using our model, we cancel the interference in the time domain by an adaptive procedure that should work regardless of the source of the primary interference. We have applied the method to laser interferometer data from the Glasgow prototype detector, where all the features we describe in this paper were observed. The algorithm has been tuned in such a way that the entire series of wide lines corresponding to the electrical interference are removed, leaving the spectrum clean enough to detect signals previously masked by them.     Discovery of Five New Pulsars in Archival Data

    Reprocessing of the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey has resulted in the discovery of five previously unknown pulsars and several as-yet-unconfirmed candidates. PSR J0922-52 has a period of 9.68 ms and a DM of 122.4 pc cm^-3. PSR J1147-66 has a period of 3.72 ms and a DM of 133.8 pc cm^-3. PSR J1227-6208 has a period of 34.53 ms, a DM of 362.6 pc cm^-3, is in a 6.7 day binary orbit, and was independently detected in an ongoing high-resolution Parkes survey by Thornton et al. and also in independent processing by Einstein@Home volunteers. PSR J1546-59 has a period of 7.80 ms and a DM of 168.3 pc cm^-3. PSR J1725-3853 is an isolated 4.79-ms pulsar with a DM of 158.2 pc cm^-3. These pulsars were likely missed in earlier processing efforts due to their high DMs and short periods and the large number of candidates that needed to be looked through.     VLBA Polarimetry of Three Powerful Radio Galaxy Cores

    We present sensitive, high dynamic range, Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) polarimetric observations of the cores of three powerful radio galaxies: 3C166, 3C236 and 3C390.3. Significant polarization is detected in one source (3C166) allowing us to map out the Faraday Rotation Measure (RM) distribution and projected magnetic field direction. The inner jet of 3C166 is found to have a rest frame RM of -2300 rad/m**2, similar to those found in quasars cores. No polarized flux was detected from the other two sources, but in both counterjets are seen. The counterjet in 3C236 was previously known, but the detection in 3C390.3 is a new discovery. We suggest that the low fractional polarization in radio galaxy cores is the result of Faraday depolarization by ionized gas associated with the accretion disk. The lower polarization of radio galaxy cores compared to quasars is then naturally explained by unified models as a result of the viewing angle.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 19 pages including 5 figure

    Matching of the continuous gravitational wave in an all sky search

    We investigate the matching of continuous gravitational wave (CGW) signals in an all sky search with reference to Earth based laser interferometric detectors. We consider the source location as the parameters of the signal manifold and templates corresponding to different source locations. It has been found that the matching of signals from locations in the sky that differ in their co-latitude and longitude by π\pi radians decreases with source frequency. We have also made an analysis with the other parameters affecting the symmetries. We observe that it may not be relevant to take care of the symmetries in the sky locations for the search of CGW from the output of LIGO-I, GEO600 and TAMA detectors.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 3 Tables, To appear in Int.
