    Treatment of multicentric Castleman's Disease accompanying multiple myeloma with bortezomib: a case report

    Multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology and characterized by various clinical manifestations and multiple organ involvement. It has been reported in association with POEMS syndrome and can progress to Kaposi's sarcoma or malignant lymphoma. The disease runs a more aggressive course and a poor prognosis. Optimal therapies have not been well established up to now. We here reported a case of rare MCD complicated with multiple myeloma who received bortezomib and achieved very good remission. To our knowledge, this is the first report on MCD in the setting of multiple myeloma with good response to bortezomib

    Deep Clustering Survival Machines with Interpretable Expert Distributions

    Conventional survival analysis methods are typically ineffective to characterize heterogeneity in the population while such information can be used to assist predictive modeling. In this study, we propose a hybrid survival analysis method, referred to as deep clustering survival machines, that combines the discriminative and generative mechanisms. Similar to the mixture models, we assume that the timing information of survival data is generatively described by a mixture of certain numbers of parametric distributions, i.e., expert distributions. We learn weights of the expert distributions for individual instances according to their features discriminatively such that each instance's survival information can be characterized by a weighted combination of the learned constant expert distributions. This method also facilitates interpretable subgrouping/clustering of all instances according to their associated expert distributions. Extensive experiments on both real and synthetic datasets have demonstrated that the method is capable of obtaining promising clustering results and competitive time-to-event predicting performance

    Feasible pickup from intact ossicular chain with floating piezoelectric microphone

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>Many microphones have been developed to meet with the implantable requirement of totally implantable cochlear implant (TICI). However, a biocompatible one without destroying the intactness of the ossicular chain still remains under investigation. Such an implantable floating piezoelectric microphone (FPM) has been manufactured and shows an efficient electroacoustic performance in vitro test at our lab. We examined whether it pick up sensitively from the intact ossicular chain and postulated whether it be an optimal implantable one.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Animal controlled experiment: five adult cats (eight ears) were sacrificed as the model to test the electroacoustic performance of the FPM. Three groups were studied: (1) the experiment group (on malleus): the FPM glued onto the handle of the malleus of the intact ossicular chains; (2) negative control group (in vivo): the FPM only hung into the tympanic cavity; (3) positive control group (Hy-M30): a HiFi commercial microphone placed close to the site of the experiment ear. The testing speaker played pure tones orderly ranged from 0.25 to 8.0 kHz. The FPM inside the ear and the HiFi microphone simultaneously picked up acoustic vibration which recorded as .wav files to analyze.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The FPM transformed acoustic vibration sensitively and flatly as did the in vitro test across the frequencies above 2.0 kHz, whereas inefficiently below 1.0 kHz for its overloading mass. Although the HiFi microphone presented more efficiently than the FPM did, there was no significant difference at 3.0 kHz and 8.0 kHz.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>It is feasible to develop such an implantable FPM for future TICIs and TIHAs system on condition that the improvement of Micro Electromechanical System and piezoelectric ceramic material technology would be applied to reduce its weight and minimize its size.</p

    The Changing Patterns in Grasslands and Soil Fertility along the Eastern Eurasian Steppe Transect across China–Mongolia–Russia

    This paper analyses the adaptation and change in species along the north-south Eastern Eurasian Steppe Transect across China – Mongolia – Russia and considers the implications for climate change and management. The plant community diversity, above-ground biomass, N:P ratios of community and of dominant species, soil N (nitrogen), soil P (phosphorus) and AP (available phosphorus) contents were studied along a 1400 km north-south transect. The main findings were: (1) the community diversity and productivity decreased with the increase in latitude and a significant negative correlation was found between the many plant characteristics and latitude (P \u3c 0.05) – decreasing diversity, biomass and N:P ratios; (2) soil AP content was lowest in Inner Mongolia, whereas no significant change in soil total P with latitude was found in China-Mongolia-Russia transect, a significant positive correlation was detected between the soil nutrient (N and AP) and latitude (P \u3c 0.05); (3) a significant positive correlation was evident between plant community P content and soil AP content (P \u3c 0.01), but a negative correlation was found between community N:P ratio and soil AP content (P \u3c 0.05). The soil AP content can be used as a soil properties indicator to reflect the plant communities P content and N: P ratio. It is suggested that greater human activities in Inner Mongolia may be an important factor affecting soil AP content, community N:P and plant growth

    Full velocities and propagation directions of coronal mass ejections inferred from simultaneous full-disk imaging and Sun-as-a-star spectroscopic observations

    Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are violent ejections of magnetized plasma from the Sun, which can trigger geomagnetic storms, endanger satellite operations and destroy electrical infrastructures on the Earth. After systematically searching Sun-as-a-star spectra observed by the Extreme-ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from May 2010 to May 2022, we identified eight CMEs associated with flares and filament eruptions by analyzing the blue-wing asymmetry of the O III 52.58 nm line profiles. Combined with images simultaneously taken by the 30.4 nm channel of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard SDO, the full velocity and propagation direction for each of the eight CMEs are derived. We find a strong correlation between geomagnetic indices (Kp and Dst) and the angle between the CME propagation direction and the Sun-Earth line, suggesting that Sun-as-a-star spectroscopic observations at EUV wavelengths can potentially help to improve the prediction accuracy of the geoeffectiveness of CMEs. Moreover, an analysis of synthesized long-exposure Sun-as-a-star spectra implies that it is possible to detect CMEs from other stars through blue-wing asymmetries or blueshifts of spectral lines.Comment: Accepted by Ap

    Identification and characterization of a novel subtype of Tula virus in Microtus arvalis obscurus voles sampled from Xinjiang, China

    Although most of Arvicolinae associated hantaviruses can not cause disease in humans, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) cases caused by Tula virus (TULV) have been described in Europe since 2002. In addition to Europe, TULV was also identified in the Microtus arvalis obscurus voles sampled from Kazakhstan, which shares borders with China. To gain more insight into the molecular epidemiology of TULV, a total of 365 rodents representing 7 species of 4 subfamily (Arvicolinae, Murinae, Gerbillinae, and Cricetinae) were captured in Qapqal county, Xinjiang, northwest China. Hantavirus RNA was recovered from 40 lung tissue samples of M. arvalis obscurus, with the prevalence of 10.96%. Genetic analysis revealed that all recovered viral sequences were most closely related to those of TULV, but exhibited >11% nucleotide differences from all currently known TULV, suggesting that they may represent a new subtype of TULV. In the S tree, the newly identified viruses formed a distinct lineage and showed a close evolutionary relationship with those sampled from Southwestern Siberia and Kazakhstan. However, they exhibited a different clustering pattern in both the M and the L trees, suggesting the possibility of genetic reassortment. Finally, the recombination event was also observed in Xinjiang TULV viruses. In sum, all these data reveal a complex evolutionary history of TULV in Central Asia.Peer reviewe

    Early chemical diagenesis, sediment-water solute exchange, and storage of reactive organic matter near the mouth of the Changjiang, East China Sea

    【Abstract】A substantial proportion of the material delivered to the modern oceans is supplied by a few large rivers such as the Changjiang. Early diagenetic reactions in surficial bottom sediments determine in large part both the eventual influence of these rivers on the sea and the nature of sedimentary deposits formed. The region off the mouth of the Changjiang exemplifies the interplay between physical, chemical, and biological factors which can produce particular spatial patterns of diagenesis and sediment-water exchange. To examine these patterns measurement of pore water solute profiles, sediment-water solute fluxes, and solute reaction rates in the upper few decimeters of sediment were made at 27 stations near the Changjiang in the East China Sea. Direct measurements of dissolved Si(OH)4, NH4+, and NO3−, fluxes from or into bottom sediments made during summer and autumn periods (15 to 24°C) range from 0.13 to 13.2, −2.6 to 3.4, and −1.4 to 3.2mmol m−2 day−1, respectively. Net solute flux from the sea floor is often lowest from deposits having the highest interstitial solute concentrations. In addition, bottom regions having the highest build up of reaction products or depletion of reactants in pore waters (with respect to overlying water) actually have the lowest rates of reaction. These same areas of elevated (products) or depleted (reactants) pore water solute concentrations, low reaction rates, and low net rate of solute exchange which are located near the mouth of the Changjiang are sites of high sedimentation rates and depauperate benthic communities. High water turbidity and resuspension apparently hinder water column production and input of reactive organic matter or other biogenic material which drive many diagenetic reactions. Rapid sedimentation or disturbance hinders benthic community development, lowers biogenic reworking, and allows build up or depletion of reaction products or reactants in bottom sediments. Offshore areas of lower sedimentation, higher productivity, and active bottom communities are sites of high initial reaction rates and increased sediment-water solute exchange compared with rapid sedimentation regions. A diagenetic paradox resulting from the interaction between benthic communities and the physical environment of sedimentation is that proportionally the greatest storage of diagenetic products related to organic matter decomposition can occur in sediments that are initially the least diagenetically reactive

    Anti-depressant effect of Paeonia lactiflora Pall extract in rats

    Purpose: To explore the effect of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. extract on depression in rats.Methods: Various doses (150, 300 and 600 mg/kg) of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. extract (PLPE) were orally administered to three groups of rats of 10 each, respectively, suffering from depression for 14 days. Fluoxetine was used as positive control. Tail suspension, forced swimming and monoamine oxidase (MAO) tests were carried out on the rats.Results: A dose-dependent reduction in rat immobility was observed. The effect of PLPE at the highest dose (600 mg/kg) was more potent than that of the reference antidepressant, fluoxetine. PLPE, at a dose ≥ 150 mg/kg significantly inhibited MAO A activity in rat whole brain in a dose-dependent manner (p &lt; 0.01); however, only oral administration of PLPE at a dose of 600 mg/kg produced observable MAO B inhibitory activity in rat brain (p &lt; 0.01). Only fluoxetine showed a tendency to inhibit both MAO A and B activities in animal brain. Neither PLPE nor fluoxetine, at the doses tested, produced significant effects on locomotor activity.Conclusion: The results suggest that Paeonia lactiflora Pall is a potential agent for the treatment of depression in humans.Keywords: Paeonia lactiflora, Depression, Tail suspension test, Forced swimming tes
