    Isometries on spaces of absolutely continuous functions in a noncompact framework

    In this paper we deal with surjective linear isometries between spaces of scalar-valued absolutely continuous functions on arbitrary (not necessarily closed or bounded) subsets of the real line (with at least two points). As a corollary, it is shown that when the underlying spaces are connected, each surjective linear isometry of these function spaces is a weighted composition operator, a result which generalizes all the previous known results concerning such isometries

    Differential fast fixed-point algorithms for underdetermined instantaneous and convolutive partial blind source separation

    This paper concerns underdetermined linear instantaneous and convolutive blind source separation (BSS), i.e., the case when the number of observed mixed signals is lower than the number of sources.We propose partial BSS methods, which separate supposedly nonstationary sources of interest (while keeping residual components for the other, supposedly stationary, "noise" sources). These methods are based on the general differential BSS concept that we introduced before. In the instantaneous case, the approach proposed in this paper consists of a differential extension of the FastICA method (which does not apply to underdetermined mixtures). In the convolutive case, we extend our recent time-domain fast fixed-point C-FICA algorithm to underdetermined mixtures. Both proposed approaches thus keep the attractive features of the FastICA and C-FICA methods. Our approaches are based on differential sphering processes, followed by the optimization of the differential nonnormalized kurtosis that we introduce in this paper. Experimental tests show that these differential algorithms are much more robust to noise sources than the standard FastICA and C-FICA algorithms.Comment: this paper describes our differential FastICA-like algorithms for linear instantaneous and convolutive underdetermined mixture

    The simultaneous effect of valproic acid and gamma radiation on telomerase activity and bax and Bcl-2 protein levels in MCF-7 breast cancer cell line

    Background: Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer. Factors such as ionizing radiation and chemotherapeutic agents can trigger apoptosis and cancer cell death. An anticonvulsant drug named Valproic acid is a histone deacetylase inhibitor that shows promising anti-tumor effects in a variety of cancers. Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein enzyme that activated in cancer cells and lead to telomeres shortening inhibition and triggering the apoptosis. Objectives: The purpose of this research was to investigate the simultaneously effect of Valproic acid and gamma radiation on telomerase activity and bax and Bcl-2 protein level in MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. Materials and Methods: MCF-7 cells was treated with different dose of Valproic acid (0, 2, 8 and 16 mM/l) and single dose of gamma radiation (4 Gy/min. (cell toxicity was determined using neutral uptake test. Telomerase activity was determined using TRAP assay (PCR-ELISA) method. Bax and Bcl-2 protein level was determined by ELISA method, as well. Results: Combination of Valproic acid and gamma radiation increased significantly cell toxicity in a time and dose dependent manner compared with control (P < 0.0001). The ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 was increased in a dose dependent manner at 48 and 72 hour treatment (P < 0.0001). There was a decrease in Telomerase activity after 24, 48 and 72 hours treatment in a dose dependent manner (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: The increasing cell toxicity, apoptosis-inducing effects and decreasing telomerase activity may play an important role in the Valproic acid and radiation mechanism. The current survey suggested that it is likely beneficial to combine Valproic acid and gamma radiation to treat breast cancer. © 2015, School of Pharmacy, Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences

    Effect of carboxymethyl cellulose-based coatings incorporated with Zataria multiflora Boiss. essential oil and grape seed extract on the shelf life of rainbow trout fillets

    To prolong the shelf life of seafood products, lipid oxidation and growth of microorganisms should be retarded. The objective of the current study was evaluating the potential application of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) coatings incorporated with Zataria multiflora Boiss. essential oil (ZMEO) and grape seed extract (GSE) on chemical (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N)), microbial (total viable count, lactic acid bacteria and Pseudomonas spp.) and organoleptic attributes of rainbow trout fillets during refrigerated storage for twenty days. GCeMS analysis showed that ZMEO is rich in monoterpene phenols such as thymol and carvacrol. The following results were obtained after 20 days of storage: The minimum level of TVB-N was measured in the fillets coated with CMC + 2 v/v ZMEO + 0.5 v/v GSE. The minimum number of total viable bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and Pseudomonas spp. were determined in the fillets coated with CMC + 2 v/v ZMEO + 1 v/v GSE. The fillets coated with CMC + 1 v/v ZMEO + 1 v/v GSE showed the best organoleptic properties. Our results revealed that CMC-based coatings incorporated with ZMEO and GSE could improve chemical, microbial and sensorial characteristics of rainbow trout fillets during cold storage. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd

    Knowledgezoom for java: A concept-based exam study tool with a zoomable open student model

    This paper presents our attempt to develop a personalized exam preparation tool for Java/OOP classes based on a fine-grained concept model of Java knowledge. Our goal was to explore two most popular student model-based approaches: open student modeling and problem sequencing. The result of our work is a Java exam preparation tool, Knowledge Zoom. The tool combines an open concept-level student model component, Knowledge Explorer and a concept-based sequencing component, Knowledge Maximizer into a single interface. This paper presents both components of Knowledge Zoom, reports results of its evaluation, and discusses lessons learned. © 2013 IEEE
