Performance Evaluation of a Helper Initiated Distributed Cooperative Medium Access Control Protocol for Wireless Networks

    Get PDF
Cross layer cooperative protocol which exploits the benefits of physical layer cooperative communication, is one of the widely recognized MAC layer protocol design strategies for future wireless networks. This paper presents performance analysis of a cooperative mac and these performance parameters are compared those of the legacy IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC. Appropriate relay station selection is the main hurdle in designing efficient cooperative MAC protocol for wireless networks.  This cooperative mac demonstrated that intermediate relay nodes themselves can initiate cooperation for relaying data frame to the receiver on behalf of the sender. This procedure makes the selection process of a “helper node” more distributed in nature as well as it contributes to increase throughput of a wireless network by reducing the overheads that are usually incurred in the helper selection process. It has been shown by thorough analytical analysis that the proposed cooperative MAC protocol offers higher throughput and lower frame transmission delay in both ideal and error prone wireless environment. These performance metrics are also evaluated while the wireless nodes are mobile as well

Development of a hot water treatment plant suitable for banana

    Get PDF
Banana is a year round fruit in Bangladesh.  After harvesting, banana is attacked by postharvest disease caused by some fungi.  The quality and quantity losses of banana occur due to disease attacks and lack of proper postharvest handling.  Fungus can be destroyed or made inactive by chemical or heat treatment.  Most of the chemicals are hazardous to human health.  Heat treatment technology is simple and is a non-chemical method to kill or inactivate pest and to control fungus.  A hot water treatment plant was designed and developed with local materials for treating banana fruits.  Overall dimensions of the hot water treatment plant were 1600 mm×926 mm×1566 mm and operated by an electrical motor of 0.38 kW.  Water was heated by the six electric immersion heaters of 2,000 W of each.  The capacity of the plant was 350 kg h-1.  The price of the hot-water treatment plant was Taka 1,00,000 (US1300)andtreatmentcostwasTaka0.55kg1( 1300) and treatment cost was Taka 0.55 kg-1 (0.007).  The effective combinations of temperatures and exposure periods of BARI Kola 1 and Sabri Kola were found to be 55°C for 5 min.  When the banana fruits were treated with hot water, the shelf-life of the fruits was found to increase by 30% and the postharvest loss reduced by 70% over those of untreated bananas.  The break-even point of the plant was 70 h yr-1.  Banana fruits treated by the plant can be profitable to traders when the annual use of the plant exceeds 70 h.  Payback period of the plant was estimated to be 26 d.  Therefore, there is a good opportunity of farmers and traders to increase income and generate employment using the hot water treatment plant.   Keywords: Hot-water treatment plant, banana, temperature, exposure period, break-even point and payback perio

Micro-finance has received a global recognition today not only as a powerful instrument for poverty reduction and empowerment of women, but also as a promising sector of financing for the banks, financial organizations and NGOs. The Grameen Bank and ASA in Bangladesh have developed a successful model of reaching credit to poor households that are generally bypassed by Government financial institutions. The present study aims to find out the comparison of the microfinance program between the Grameen Bank and ASA in Bangladesh. This research is conducted on the three Upazilas of Comilla District in Bangladesh. We have used survey method to analysis the real scenario of microfinance system of Grameen Bank and ASA from the field level beneficiaries and the officials as well. Secondary data also used in this study. This paper includes the observations, general overview and key indicators of microfinance services in Bangladesh. This paper also shows problems of microfinance and suggests some recommendations for the improvement of micro-finance in Bangladesh

Five oxovanadium(IV) complexes of the type [VO(L)(DPhen)], containing Schiff base derived from α-amino acid, [where L = 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde-α-alanine (hb-Ala), 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde-DL-phenylalanine (hb-Phe), 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde-leucine (hb-Leu), 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde-glycine (hb-Gly) and 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde-DL-methionine (hb-Met) & DPhen = 5,6-Dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline] have been synthesized and characterized by some physicochemical properties, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibilities measurements, elemental analysis, UV-Visible, FT-IR and EIS-MS spectral studies. The molar conductance values evidenced the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. The magnetic moment values of the complexes are in accordance with the d1 electronic configuration of the VIVO2+ moiety and indicates the paramagnetic behavior of the complexes. IR spectral data indicates the coordination of tridentate amino acid Schiff base ligands to the vanadyl (VO2+) ion through O, N, O-donor. ESI-MS spectral study confirmed the proposed structure of the complexes. All the analytical data suggested that all the complexes possess to have distorted octahedral geometry. The complexes were screened for their antibacterial activity against four human pathogenic bacteria; two Gram positive Escherichia coli & Pseudomonas aeruginosa and two Gram negative Staphylococcus aureus & Bacillus cereus with Kanamycin (K-30) standard. The result shows that all the complexes have moderate to strong potential antibacterial activity against all the pathogenic bacteria. Transpedicular screw fixation for the treatment of thoracolumbar spine fracture

    Get PDF
One of the most popular procedures for treating the unstable thoracolumbar fracture is the short segment pedicle screw fixation. Due to lack of adequate neurological improvement, progressive kyphosis and hardware failure, the efficacy of different methods remain debatable. One hundred patients of thoracolumbar burst fractures were managed from January 2010 to December 2014 by  transforaminal thoracolumbar interbody fusion and short-segment pedicle screw stabilization. Each patient was followed-up for a minimum of 2 years. Bony fusion was done in each patient in between two vertebra along with transpedicular fixation. Follow-up radiological images showed good reduction and the fusion of the vertebral body was good. Excellent neurological improvement of the Frankel grade C and D was seen in 81 patients. Eight patients had  grade B, improvement which was not satisfactory. Fifteen patients with no paraplegia/hemiplegia on admission remained neurologically intact. For the management of thoracolumbar burst fractures short segment posterior transpedicular fixation with bone graft is very economic and safe procedure with good neurological improvement
