Superconducting screening on different length scales in high-quality bulk MgB2 superconductor

High quality bulk MgB2 exhibit a structure of voids and agglomeration of crystals on different length-scales. Because of this, the superconducting currents percolate between the voids in the ensuing structure. Magnetic measurements reveal that the superconducting currents circulate on at least three different length-scales, of ~1 micrometre, ~10 micrometre and whole of the sample (~millimetre). Each of these screenings contributes to the measured irreversible magnetic moment (Dm). The analysis of the field dependence of Dm for samples of subsequently decreasing size showed that the critical current obtained using the simple critical state model is erroneous. This leads to the artefact of the sample size-dependent critical current and irreversibility field. Our data analysis enables the separation of the contribution of each of the screening currents to Dm. The field dependence of each of the currents follows a stretched exponential form. The currents flowing around whole of the sample give a dominant contribution to Dm in the intermediate fields (1T < H < 4T at 20K) and they can be used to obtain the value of Jc from critical state model, which corresponds to the transport Jc

Fade Depth Prediction Using Human Presence for Real Life WSN Deployment

Current problem in real life WSN deployment is determining fade depth in indoor propagation scenario for link power budget analysis using (fade margin parameter). Due to the fact that human presence impacts the performance of wireless networks, this paper proposes a statistical approach for shadow fading prediction using various real life parameters. Considered parameters within this paper include statistically mapped human presence and the number of people through time compared to the received signal strength. This paper proposes an empirical model fade depth prediction model derived from a comprehensive set of measured data in indoor propagation scenario. It is shown that the measured fade depth has high correlations with the number of people in non-line-of-sight condition, giving a solid foundation for the fade depth prediction model. In line-of-sight conditions this correlations is significantly lower. By using the proposed model in real life deployment scenarios of WSNs, the data loss and power consumption can be reduced by the means of intelligently planning and designing Wireless Sensor Network

Improvement of critical current in MgB2/Fe wires by a ferromagnetic sheath

Transport critical current (Ic) was measured for Fe-sheathed MgB2 round wires. A critical current density of 5.3 x 10^4 A/cm^2 was obtained at 32K. Strong magnetic shielding by the iron sheath was observed, resulting in a decrease in Ic by only 15% in a field of 0.6T at 32K. In addition to shielding, interaction between the iron sheath and the superconductor resulted in a constant Ic between 0.2 and 0.6T. This was well beyond the maximum field for effective shielding of 0.2T. This effect can be used to substantially improve the field performance of MgB2/Fe wires at fields at least 3 times higher than the range allowed by mere magnetic shielding by the iron sheath. The dependence of Ic on the angle between field and current showed that the transport current does not flow straight across the wire, but meanders between the grains

Precision Drift Chambers for the Atlas Muon Spectrometer

ATLAS is a detector under construction to explore the physics at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It has a muon spectrometer with an excellent momentum resolution of 3-10%, provided by three layers of precision monitored-drift-tube chambers in a toroidal magnetic field. A single drift tube measures a track point with a mean resolution close to 100 micron, even at the expected high neutron and gamma background rates. The tubes are positioned within the chamber with an accuracy of 20 microns, achieved by elaborate construction and assembly monitoring procedures.Comment: 3 pages, 2 eps figures, Proceedings for poster at Physics in Collisions Conference (PIC03), Zeuthen, Germany, June 2003. Egorov property in perturbed cat map

We study the time evolution of the quantum-classical correspondence (QCC) for the well known model of quantised perturbed cat maps on the torus in the very specific regime of semi-classically small perturbations. The quality of the QCC is measured by the overlap of classical phase-space density and corresponding Wigner function of the quantum system called quantum-classical fidelity (QCF). In the analysed regime the QCF strongly deviates from the known general behaviour in particular it decays faster then exponential. Here we study and explain the observed behavior of the QCF and the apparent violation of the QCC principle.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

Effect of carbon nanotube doping on critical current density of MgB2 superconductor

The effect of doping MgB2 with carbon nanotubes on transition temperature, lattice parameters, critical current density and flux pinning was studied for MgB2-xCx with x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The carbon substitution for B was found to enhance Jc in magnetic fields but depress Tc. The depression of Tc, which is caused by the carbon substitution for B, increases with increasing doping level, sintering temperature and duration. By controlling the extent of the substitution and addition of carbon nanotubes we can achieve the optimal improvement on critical current density and flux pinning in magnetic fields while maintaining the minimum reduction in Tc. Under these conditions, Jc was enhanced by two orders of magnitude at 8T and 5K and 7T and 10K. Jc was more than 10,000A/cm2 at 20K and 4T and 5K and 8.5T, respectively

Large-Scale Production of Monitored Drift Tube Chambers for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer

Precision drift tube chambers with a sense wire positioning accuracy of better than 20 microns are under construction for the ATLAS muon spectrometer. 70% of the 88 large chambers for the outermost layer of the central part of the spectrometer have been assembled. Measurements during chamber construction of the positions of the sense wires and of the sensors for the optical alignment monitoring system demonstrate that the requirements for the mechanical precision of the chambers are fulfilled

    Nanocoolers

We present a simple kinematic model of a non-equilibrium steady state device, which can operate either as a heat engine or as a refrigerator. The model is composed of two or more scattering channels where the motion is fully described by deterministic classical dynamics, which connect a pair of stochastic (infinite) heat and particle baths at unequal temperatures. We discuss precise kinematic conditions under which our model may approach Carnot's optimal efficiency in different situations.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure

Statistical Indicators of Groundwater Geochemical Characteristics in a Quaternary Aquifer from the Mala Mlaka Well Field Catchment Area (Zagreb, Croatia)

The sediments are being deposited mostly as poorly sorted clayey–sandy silts. The distribution and concentration of most of the chemical elements is dependant on the mineralogical composition and granulometric features of the Makirina sediments, which show values more or less similar to those from the Central Adriatic. Accordingly, there is a positive correlation with Al and K concentrations increasing off-shore and with the depth being associated with increasing concentrations of clay minerals within the clay fraction. The same holds true for concentrations of some trace elements, especially Mo and Se which is consistent with the distribution pattern of sulphides
