The development of Brunei during the British residential era, 1906-1959 : a sultanate regenerated
The revival of Brunei after centuries of seemingly-irreversible decline, dates from January 1906, when Mr MSH McArthur assumed office as the first British Resident in the Sultanate. In this study it will be shown hoer a moribund, bankrupt and isolated backwater, troubled by internal disaffection and living under a Brooke 'sword of Damocles', was regenerated by more enlightened British administration, coupled later with the fortuitous discovery of petroleum, into a peaceful, flourishing and prosperous little State, the 'Shangri-la of the East'. Originally the initiative rested firmly with the imperial powers but after the Second World War the balance shifted towards an increasingly literate and healthy local population. British administrators, instead of initiating policy (as formerly) found themselves obliged increasingly to react to demands made upon them by an emerging Brunei nationalist movement led by the charismatic Sheikh Azahari. In the end, however, it was the monarchy which was most strengthened during the Residential Era; and it was overwhelmingly to the crown, rather than to the people, that power was transferred when Brunei regained internal autonomy on 29 September 1959
Systematic limits on sin^2{2theta_{13}} in neutrino oscillation experiments with multi-reactors
Sensitivities to sin^2{2theta_{13}} without statistical errors (``systematic
limit'') are investigated in neutrino oscillation experiments with multiple
reactors. Using an analytical approach, we show that the systematic limit on
sin^2{2theta_{13}} is dominated by the uncorrelated systematic error sigma_u of
the detector. Even in an experiment with multi-detectors and multi-reactors, it
turns out that most of the systematic errors including the one due to the
nature of multiple sources is canceled as in the case with a single reactor
plus two detectors, if the near detectors are placed suitably. The case of the
KASKA plan (7 reactors and 3 detectors) is investigated in detail, and it is
explicitly shown that it does not suffer from the extra uncertainty due to
multiple reactors.Comment: 26 pages, 10 eps-files, revtex
Effective use of ERTS multisensor data in the Northern Great Plains
The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS imagery was used as a tool in the identification and refinement of soil association areas; to classify land use patterns between crop and fallow fields; to identify corn, soybeans, and oats; and to identify broad generalized range ecosystems. Various data handling techniques were developed and applied to accomplish these tasks. A map outlining soil associations and relative land values was completed on a base mosaic of ERTS imagery and is included as an appendix to the report
Experiences and perceptions of Spring Lane Sure Start Children's Centre
Spring Lane Sure Start Children’s Centre was designated in September 2007, and ‘officially opened’ in February 2009. The Centre is housed in refurbished premises within a nursery/school complex in the heart of Northampton and offers diverse health, childcare, early education and support services delivered by a multi-professional team. These services and activities are available to children aged 0-5 years old, and their parents/carers, residing within a catchment area comprising eight ‘Super Output Areas’ in the Castle and St. James ward of Northampton.
In April 2009, the Centre for Children and Youth (CCY) – a research centre based at The University of Northampton – was commissioned by Spring Lane Sure Start Children’s Centre to collate and gather evaluative data regarding experiences and perceptions of the Children’s Centre during its first year of activitie
Soil moisture and evapotranspiration predictions using Skylab data
The author has identified the following significant results. Multispectral reflectance and emittance data from the Skylab workshop were evaluated for prediction of evapotranspiration and soil moisture for an irrigated region of southern Texas. Wavelengths greater than 2.1 microns were required to spectrally distinguish between wet and dry fallow surfaces. Thermal data provided a better estimate of soil moisture than did data from the reflective bands. Thermal data were dependent on soil moisture but not on the type of agricultural land use. The emittance map, when used in conjunction with existing models, did provide an estimate of evapotranspiration rates. Surveys of areas of high soil moisture can be accomplished with space altitude thermal data. Thermal data will provide a reliable input into irrigation scheduling

propnet: A Knowledge Graph for Materials Science
Discovering the ideal material for a new application involves determining its numerous properties, such as electronic, mechanical, or thermodynamic, to match those of its desired application. The rise of high-throughput computation has meant that large databases of material properties are now accessible to scientists. However, these databases contain far more information than might appear at first glance, since many relationships exist in the materials science literature to derive, or at least approximate, additional properties. propnet is a new computational framework designed to help scientists to automatically calculate additional information from their datasets. It does this by constructing a network graph of relationships between different materials properties and traversing this graph. Initially, propnet contains a catalog of over 100 property relationships but the hope is for this to expand significantly in the future, and contributions from the community are welcomed
