Modeling the magnetic pickup of an electric guitar
The magnetic pickup of an electric guitar uses electromagnetic induction to convert the motion of a ferromagnetic guitar string into an electrical signal. Although the magnetic pickup is often cited as an everyday application of Faraday\u27s law, few sources mention the distortion that the pickup generates when converting string motion into an electric signal, and even fewer attempt to analyze and explain this distortion. By modeling the magnet and ferromagnetic wire as surfaces with magnetic charge, an intuitive model that accurately predicts the output of a magnetic guitar pickup can be constructed. Moreimportantly, this model can be understood and manipulated by students at the undergraduate level and provides an excellent learning tool due to its straightforward mathematics and intuitive algorithm. Experiments show that it predicts the change in a magnetic field due to the presence of a ferromagnetic wire with a high degree of accuracy
The Cardiorespiratory Response while Nordic Walking vs. Regular Walking Among Middle-Aged to Older Adults
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 5: Issue 1, Article 6, 2024. Roughly five million deaths worldwide are accounted for by physical inactivity. Furthermore, there is a strong dose-response relationship between physical inactivity and all-cause mortality, cardiovascular health, and metabolic health. Recently, Nordic walking (NW) has been introduced as a mode of exercise where one can increase energy expenditure compared to regular walking (RW) due to increased engagement of upper body musculature using poles while walking. According to established findings, most work has been done in a laboratory which can interrupt natural NW mechanics. Therefore, this study\u27s purpose was to measure the cardiorespiratory and energy expenditure differences in NW and RW in a field setting. Twenty middle-aged and older adults participated in this study. The initial session included Nordic walking familiarization, 10-m gait speed test, and a peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) test. The two exercise sessions consisted of either NW or RW on an indoor track for 30-min. All metabolic variables were measured via COSMED K5. A paired-sample t-test revealed a significant difference between NW and RW for %VO2peak values (p = .008), kcal· min-1 (p = .005), and total kcal expenditure (p = .001). No significant difference was found for preferred gait speed (p =.485) between NW and RW. NW elicited a higher %VO2peak, kcal· min-1, and total kcal expenditure compared to walking. In turn, this study agrees with previous research and supports the use of NW to increase energy expenditure to potentially improve one’s metabolic and cardiovascular health
Economic impact of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection in the USA: A systematic literature review and cost synthesis
INTRODUCTION: Up to 35% of patients with a first episode of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) develop recurrent CDI (rCDI), and of those, up to 65% experience multiple recurrences. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to review and summarize the economic impact of rCDI in the United States of America.
METHODS: English-language publications reporting real-world healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and/or direct medical costs associated with rCDI in the USA were searched in MEDLINE, MEDLINE In-Process, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases over the past 10 years (2012-2022), as well as in selected scientific conferences that publish research on rCDI and its economic burden over the past 3 years (2019-2022). HRU and costs identified through the SLR were synthesized to estimate annual rCDI-attributable direct medical costs to inform the economic impact of rCDI from a US third-party payer\u27s perspective.
RESULTS: A total of 661 publications were retrieved, and 31 of them met all selection criteria. Substantial variability was found across these publications in terms of data source, patient population, sample size, definition of rCDI, follow-up period, outcomes reported, analytic approach, and methods to adjudicate rCDI-attributable costs. Only one study reported rCDI-attributable costs over 12 months. Synthesizing across the relevant publications using a component-based cost approach, the per-patient per-year rCDI-attributable direct medical cost was estimated to range from 82,268.
CONCLUSIONS: While real-world studies on economic impact of rCDI in the USA suggested a high-cost burden, inconsistency in methodologies and results reporting warranted a component-based cost synthesis approach to estimate the annual medical cost burden of rCDI. Utilizing available literature, we estimated the average annual rCDI-attributable medical costs to allow for consistent economic assessments of rCDI and identify the budget impact on US payers
Exotic Mammals Disperse Exotic Fungi That Promote Invasion by Exotic Trees
Biological invasions are often complex phenomena because many factors influence their outcome. One key aspect is how non-natives interact with the local biota. Interaction with local species may be especially important for exotic species that require an obligatory mutualist, such as Pinaceae species that need ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi. EM fungi and seeds of Pinaceae disperse independently, so they may use different vectors. We studied the role of exotic mammals as dispersal agents of EM fungi on Isla Victoria, Argentina, where many Pinaceae species have been introduced. Only a few of these tree species have become invasive, and they are found in high densities only near plantations, partly because these Pinaceae trees lack proper EM fungi when their seeds land far from plantations. Native mammals (a dwarf deer and rodents) are rare around plantations and do not appear to play a role in these invasions. With greenhouse experiments using animal feces as inoculum, plus observational and molecular studies, we found that wild boar and deer, both non-native, are dispersing EM fungi. Approximately 30% of the Pinaceae seedlings growing with feces of wild boar and 15% of the seedlings growing with deer feces were colonized by non-native EM fungi. Seedlings growing in control pots were not colonized by EM fungi. We found a low diversity of fungi colonizing the seedlings, with the hypogeous Rhizopogon as the most abundant genus. Wild boar, a recent introduction to the island, appear to be the main animal dispersing the fungi and may be playing a key role in facilitating the invasion of pine trees and even triggering their spread. Using plant volatile traps to develop phenology models for natural enemies: An example using Chrysopa nigricornis (Burmeister) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae)
A model predicting phenology of adult Chrysopa nigricornis (Burmeister) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) in orchards was developed from field (trapping) data supplemented with development data collected under laboratory conditions. Lower and upper thresholds of 10.1°C and 29.9°C, respectively, were estimated from published and unpublished laboratory observations, and were used to develop a phenology model. Season-long field data were collected using white delta traps that had been baited with squalene, a volatile shown previously to be highly attractive to C. nigricornis. The model was developed from data collected in three Washington apple orchards, and was validated using independent data sets collected from apple, sweet cherry, pear, and walnut orchards over a 2–4year period across a much wider geographic region. We found that the mean absolute deviation across all crops and years was 39.7±1.2day-degrees (DD), or 4.4±0.14days. Populations of C. nigricornis from walnut orchards in California emerged 105DD later than those in Oregon and Washington, thus requiring correction of average time of first trap catch in California to synchronize models. The ability to use a single model across multiple crops, different prey species and abundances, and different pesticide regimes demonstrates that phenology models for generalist predators may have broader application to IPM programs in other cropping systems
Determining the date of diagnosis – is it a simple matter? The impact of different approaches to dating diagnosis on estimates of delayed care for ovarian cancer in UK primary care
Background Studies of cancer incidence and early management will increasingly draw on routine electronic patient records. However, data may be incomplete or inaccurate. We developed a generalisable strategy for investigating presenting symptoms and delays in diagnosis using ovarian cancer as an example. Methods The General Practice Research Database was used to investigate the time between first report of symptom and diagnosis of 344 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer between 01/06/2002 and 31/05/2008. Effects of possible inaccuracies in dating of diagnosis on the frequencies and timing of the most commonly reported symptoms were investigated using four increasingly inclusive definitions of first diagnosis/suspicion: 1. "Definite diagnosis" 2. "Ambiguous diagnosis" 3. "First treatment or complication suggesting pre-existing diagnosis", 4 "First relevant test or referral". Results The most commonly coded symptoms before a definite diagnosis of ovarian cancer, were abdominal pain (41%), urogenital problems(25%), abdominal distension (24%), constipation/change in bowel habits (23%) with 70% of cases reporting at least one of these. The median time between first reporting each of these symptoms and diagnosis was 13, 21, 9.5 and 8.5 weeks respectively. 19% had a code for definitions 2 or 3 prior to definite diagnosis and 73% a code for 4. However, the proportion with symptoms and the delays were similar for all four definitions except 4, where the median delay was 8, 8, 3, 10 and 0 weeks respectively. Conclusion Symptoms recorded in the General Practice Research Database are similar to those reported in the literature, although their frequency is lower than in studies based on self-report. Generalisable strategies for exploring the impact of recording practice on date of diagnosis in electronic patient records are recommended, and studies which date diagnoses in GP records need to present sensitivity analyses based on investigation, referral and diagnosis data. Free text information may be essential in obtaining accurate estimates of incidence, and for accurate dating of diagnoses
Using plant volatile traps to estimate the diversity of natural enemy communities in orchard ecosystems
In this study we used sticky traps baited with plant volatile lures to monitor the biodiversity of natural enemies in orchard ecosystems in the western U.S. We compared the diversity of predator genera from season total trap catches in 37 different orchards (apple, cherry, pear and walnut) over a two-year period (2010−2011) using standardized Hill number biodiversity indices and community similarity profiles. For a subset of 23 of these orchards we were also able to monitor the change in biodiversity of predator genera over the full growing season in the different orchard crops. A total of 37,854 individuals from 31 different genera of foliage-active generalist predators were collected from all orchards combined. Mean sample coverage was high (0.98) and richness, diversity and evenness differed between crops in 2010, but not in 2011. There was more than 90% similarity in the richness of predator genera among crops and among orchards within crops, but a greater level of differentiation was observed among orchards when variation in their relative abundance and dominance in the communities was taken into account. There was a consistent rise in predator generic richness and diversity through the season in both years for apple, cherry and pear orchards, but in walnut orchards, a steep rise from March to May was followed by a decline through the rest of the season. In an additional component of the study, the species level similarity of predator and parasitoid communities was analyzed for total season trap catch data from six walnut orchards. The rarefied species richness of parasitoids was much greater than that for predators, although the diversity, evenness and dominance of the parasitoid species varied considerably among orchards. The results from this study highlight the fact that natural enemy communities in orchard ecosystems can be effectively monitored using plant volatile traps, and that these communities are surprisingly diverse despite frequent disturbance from pest management intervention
