Lipid droplets (LD) in porcine oocytes form a dark mass reaching almost all cytoplasm. Herein we investigated changes in fat areas, cytoplasmic tone and LD morphology during in vitro maturation (IVM) of porcine oocytes cultured with 100mM trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10,c12 CLA) or 10mM forskolin at different time periods. Four groups were constituted: control, excipient, t10,c12 CLA and forskolin, with drugs being supplemented during 44 to 48h and the initial 22 to 24h in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. In Experiment 3, forskolin was supplemented for the first 2 h. Matured oocytes were inseminated with frozen-thawed boar semen and cleavage rate recorded. Before and during IVM, samples of oocytes were evaluated for LD, total and fat areas and fat gray value or for meiotic progression. Results showed that forskolin supplementation during 44 to 48 h or 22 to 24 h inhibits oocyte maturation (exp. 1: forskolin = 5.1±8.0%, control = 72.6±5.0%; exp. 2: forskolin =24.3±7.4%, control =71.6±5.6%) and cleavage (exp. 1: forskolin=0.0±0.0%, control=55.4±4.1%; exp. 2: forskolin=8.3±3.3%, control=54.5±3.0%). Forskolin also reduced oocyte and fat areas. In Experiment 3, forskolin negative effect on oocyte maturation and cleavage disappeared, although minor (P<0.03) LD and oocyte fat areas were identified at 22 to 24 h of IVM. Oocytes supplemented with t10,c12 CLA during 44 to 48h presented a lighter (P<0.04) colour tone cytoplasm than those of control and forskolin. In conclusion, t10,c12 CLA and forskolin were capable of modifying the distribution and morphology of cytoplasmic LD during porcine oocyte maturation, thus reducing its lipid content in a time-dependent manner

20 cm VLA Radio-Continuum Study of M31 - Images and Point Source Catalogues

We present a series of new high-sensitivity and high-resolution radio-continuum images of M31 at \lambda=20 cm (\nu=1.4 GHz). These new images were produced by merging archived 20 cm radio-continuum observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope. Images presented here are sensitive to rms=60 \mu Jy and feature high angular resolution (<10"). A complete sample of discrete radio sources have been catalogued and analysed across 17 individual VLA projects. We identified a total of 864 unique discrete radio sources across the field of M31. One of the most prominent regions in M31 is the ring feature for which we estimated total integrated flux of 706 mJy at \lambda=20 cm. We compare here, detected sources to those listed in Gelfand et al. (2004) at \lambda=92 cm and find 118 sources in common to both surveys. The majority (61%) of these sources exhibit a spectral index of \alpha <-0.6 indicating that their emission is predominantly non-thermal in nature. That is more typical for background objects.Comment: 28 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in the Serbian Astronomical Journa

AGN behind the SMC selected from radio and X-ray surveys

The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) revealed 3053 X-ray sources with the majority expected to be active galactic nuclei (AGN) behind the SMC. However, the high stellar density in this field often does not allow assigning unique optical counterparts and hinders source classification. On the other hand, the association of X-ray point sources with radio emission can be used to select background AGN with high confidence, and to constrain other object classes like pulsar wind nebula. To classify X-ray and radio sources, we use clear correlations of X-ray sources found in the XMM-Newton survey with radio-continuum sources detected with ATCA and MOST. Deep radio-continuum images were searched for correlations with X-ray sources of the XMM-Newton SMC-survey point-source catalogue as well as galaxy clusters seen with extended X-ray emission. Eighty eight discrete radio sources were found in common with the X-ray point-source catalogue in addition to six correlations with extended X-ray sources. One source is identified as a Galactic star and eight as galaxies. Eight radio sources likely originate in AGN that are associated with clusters of galaxies seen in X-rays. One source is a PWN candidate. We obtain 43 new candidates for background sources located behind the SMC. A total of 24 X-ray sources show jet-like radio structures.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&

Study on Doping Prevention: A map of Legal, Regulatory and Prevention Practice Provisions in EU 28

    Get PDF
Historically, anti-doping efforts have focused on the detection and deterrence of doping in elite and competitive sport. There is, however, a growing concern that doping is occurring outside the organised sporting system; giving rise to the belief that the misuse of doping agents in recreational sport has become a societal problem and a public health issue that must be addressed. The EU Commission awarded a contract (EAC/2013/0617) to a Consortium to undertake this Study with the aim of developing the evidence-base for policies designed to combat doping in recreational sport. Fourteen internationally recognised experts shaped the Study which comprised (i) the collection of primary data through a structured survey, and (ii) secondary data through literature searches and website analysis. All 28 Member States participated in the information-gathering process. Specifically, this involved a systematic study of the ethical considerations, legal position, prevention research landscape, and current practise in relation to the prevention of doping in recreational sport. The Study provides a comprehensive overview of current practice and legislation as it applies to the prevention of doping and promotes and supports the sharing of best practices in the EU regarding the fight against doping in recreational sport. It concludes with seven recommendations for future action that focus on the need for a coordinated response in relation to the problems arising from doping in recreational sport

The quality of water, under the influence of the wastewater treatment plant's discharges, makes the simulation of the water parameters a key issue, broadly when considering intermittent rivers. In the case of study, the Pracana reservoir works as an example of the characterization, monitoring, and control of the impact of several, wastewater treatment plant's discharges, directly contributing to water quality. Proença-a-Nova's wastewater treatment plant contributes directly to the Pracana reservoir (Central Portugal), which is a protected field. Twelve georeferenced water samples were gathered, between the sewage discharge and downstream to the Pracana reservoir, at almost equal distances. Sampling campaigns were taken during three different periods: rainy winter (January), intermediate conditions (March) and dry season (June). The following chemical parameters were analyzed: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Dry Residue, Ptotal, Ntotal, pH, Temperature, and Microbiological Parameters. DO, BOD5 and Microbiological Parameters served as indicators, for environmental pollution evaluation. A coupled hydrodynamic and water dispersion model, QUAL2kw, was used for water's quality simulation. The results lead to conclude that the water quality is acceptable for multiple purposes, except for human consumption, mainly due to moderate to high values of BOD5.Águas do Centro Enterprise and by the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT), under contracts UID/GEO/04683/2013 with FCT (the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation

Multi-frequency observations of a superbubble in the LMC: The case of LHA 120-N 70

We present a detailed study of new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and XMM-Newton observations of LHA 120-N 70 (hereafter N 70), a spherically shaped object in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) classified as a superbubble (SB). Both archival and new observations were used to produce high quality radio-continuum, X-ray and optical images. The radio spectral index of N 70 is estimated to be α=0.12±0.06\alpha=-0.12\pm 0.06 indicating that while a supernova or supernovae have occurred in the region at some time in the distant past, N70 is not the remnant of a single specific supernova. N70 exhibits limited polarisation with a maximum fractional polarisation of 9% in a small area of the north west limb. We estimate the size of N 70 to have a diameter of 104 pc (±1\pm 1 pc). The morphology of N 70 in X-rays closely follows that in radio and optical, with most X-ray emission confined within the bright shell seen at longer wavelengths. Purely thermal models adequately fit the soft X-ray spectrum which lacks harder emission (above 1 keV). We also examine the pressure output of N 70 where the values for the hot (PX) and warm (PHii) phase are consistent with other studied Hii regions. However, the dust-processed radiation pressure (PIR) is significantly smaller than in any other object studied in Lopez et al. (2013). N70 is a very complex region that is likely to have had multiple factors contributing to both the origin and evolution of the entire region.Comment: 21 pages 8 figures accepted for publication in A
