Important subjects such as the genetics and chemistry of viruses and certain topics in bacterial genetics have had to be omitted, while others have not received the treatment they deserve.     Focusing versus defocusing properties of truly naked black holes

    We study the properties of the congruence of null geodesics propagating near the so-called truly naked horizons (TNH) - objects having finite Kretschmann scalar but with diverging tidal acceleration for freely falling observers. The expansion of outgoing rays near the future horizon always tends to vanish for the non-extremal case but may be non-zero for the distorted (ultra)extremal one. It tends to diverge for the ingoing ones if the the null energy condition (NEC) is satisfied in the vicinity of the horizon outside. However, it also tends to zero for NEC violating cases except the remote horizons. We also discuss the validity of test particle approximation for TNHs and find the sufficient condition for backreaction remaining small.Comment: 16 pages. To appear in IJMP

    Relativistic nuclear structure effects in quasielastic neutrino scattering

    Charged-current cross sections are calculated for quasielastic neutrino and antineutrino scattering using a relativistic meson-nucleon model. We examine how nuclear-structure effects, such as relativistic random-phase-approximation (RPA) corrections and momentum-dependent nucleon self-energies, influence the extraction of the axial form factor of the nucleon. RPA corrections are important only at low-momentum transfers. In contrast, the momentum dependence of the relativistic self-energies changes appreciably the value of the axial-mass parameter, MAM_A, extracted from dipole fits to the axial form factor. Using Brookhaven's experimental neutrino spectrum we estimate the sensitivity of MA_A to various relativistic nuclear-structure effects.Comment: 26 pages, revtex, 6 postscript figures (available upon request

    Finite element-integral simulation of static and flight fan noise radiation from the JT15D turbofan engine

    An iterative finite element integral technique is used to predict the sound field radiated from the JT15D turbofan inlet. The sound field is divided into two regions: the sound field within and near the inlet which is computed using the finite element method and the radiation field beyond the inlet which is calculated using an integral solution technique. The velocity potential formulation of the acoustic wave equation was employed in the program. For some single mode JT15D data, the theory and experiment are in good agreement for the far field radiation pattern as well as suppressor attenuation.     Electroweak Measurements of Neutron Densities in CREX and PREX at JLab, USA

    Measurement of the parity-violating electron scattering asymmetry is an established technique at Jefferson Lab and provides a new opportunity to measure the weak charge distribution and hence pin down the neutron radius in nuclei in a relatively clean and model-independent way. This is because the Z boson of the weak interaction couples primarily to neutrons. We will describe the PREX and CREX experiments on 208{}^{208}Pb and 48{}^{48}Ca respectively; these are both doubly-magic nuclei whose first excited state can be discriminated by the high resolution spectrometers at JLab. The heavier lead nucleus, with a neutron excess, provides an interpretation of the neutron skin thickness in terms of properties of bulk neutron matter. For the lighter 48{}^{48}Ca nucleus, which is also rich in neutrons, microscopic nuclear theory calculations are feasible and are sensitive to poorly constrained 3-neutron forces.Comment: A contribution to the upcoming EPJA Special Volume on Nuclear Symmetry Energ

    The present paper argues that the costs of climate change are primarily adjustment costs. The central result is that climate change will reduce welfare whenever it occurs more rapidly than the rate at which capital stocks (interpreted broadly to include natural resource stocks) would naturally adjust through market processes.
