BIO-C-FLUX. Biologischer Kohlenstofffluss in der bodennahen Wasserschicht des kuestenfernen Ozeans Schlussbericht

This report presents the results of biological investigations in the near-bottom water layer in the deep sea of the Northeast Atlantic. The scientific framework of BIO-C-FLUX is closely associated with the international JGOFS (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study) program which deals, on a global scale, with the biological aspects of the marine carbon cycle, concentrating mainly on the carbon flux in the upper mixed layer of the open ocean. BIO-C-FLUX studied the following main topics: - The biological turnover of sedimented POC by the benthopelagic and benthic faunas. The benthopelagic fauna included bacteria, zooplankton, nekton, and megafauna. The benthic studies covered bacteria, nano-, meio- and macrofauna. - The quantity and quality of sedimented POC. - The temporal and spatial variability of composition, standing stocks and turnover of POC in various faunal groups within the subsystems (benthopelagos, benthos) studied. The main research site was the BIOTRANS area in the Westeuropean Basin at 47 N/20 W (water depth 3850-4550 m). Comparative studies were made along the 20 W meridian at 59 N (Iceland Basin, 2900 m) and at 34 N (Madeira Abyssal Plain, 5120 m). These three locations represented different production regimes with increasing primary productivity from south to north. Ylideneamine functionalised heterocyclic ligands, 1,3-dimethyl-1,3-dihydro- benzimidazol-2-ylideneamine (I), 3-methyl-3H-benzothiazol-2-ylideneamine (II) or 3,4-dimethyl-3H-thiazol-2-ylideneamine (III), were employed in the preparation of a series of both charged and neutral gold(i) complexes consisting either of a Au(C6F5) fragment (1-3), a [Au(PPh3)] + unit (4-6) or a [Au(NHC)]+ unit (7) coordinated to the imine nitrogen of the neutral ylideneamine ligand. These complexes were fully characterised by various techniques including X-ray diffraction. In addition, the antitumour and antimalarial potential of selected compounds were assessed in a preliminary study aimed at determining the medicinal value of such compounds. Complexation of the azol-2-ylideneamine ligands with [Au(PPh3)] + increases their antitumour as well as antimalarial activity. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.Articl

IGOFS Indik. Teilprojekt 8: Zur Rolle des Bakterioplanktons in verschiedenen Produktionsgebieten des Arabischen Meeres Schlussbericht

As part of the German Indian Ocean Project microbiological investigations were carried out to determine the carbon fluxes channeled through the heterotrophic bacterioplankton under the highly productive upwelling conditions off Oman during SW monsoon in 1997. Results include data of bacterial standing stocks, bacterial degradation of particulate and dissolved organic matter, bacterial hydrolytic activity and bacterial biomass production. These data are useful to answer the questions of special interest indicated before concerning bacterial biomass transfer, link between primary and bacterial secondary net production, portion of bacterial biomass compared to total biomass, the role of the heterotrophic bacterioplankton in particle degradation, and vertical changes of bacterial activity patterns in the water column. Analysis of sampling material and data compilation has been finished. Data are now available from the German JGOFS data management for interested scientists. Results will be adopted to the national and international data synthesis and will contribute to the JGOFS goal to better understand the biogeochemical processes under the changing temporal and spatial conditions in the Arabian Sea and to find out whether the western Indian Ocean is a sink or a source for carbon in the global carbon cycle.
