    Moral Intuition in Clinical Decision-Making

    Get PDF
The United Kingdom’s General Medical Council investigation of Dr. Michael Munro raises concerns about the ability of normative ethics to satisfactorily ‘solve’ ethical dilemmas in isolation within the real world. In this particular case it seems vague utilitarian principles were used to justify actions by a doctor that many people find morally unacceptable. This raises questions of what we might do when we find our normative ethical theories conflicting with our moral intuitions. Is there more to our ethical deliberations than merely implementing specific normative theories? Is there in fact a role for considering other elements in the decision-making process, such as one’s moral intuition? I suggest that despite being criticized as overly subjective or unreliable, there may still be a persuasive social and moral justification for paying attention to the unease of moral intuition when we find it conflicting with our normative judgments, especially in complex real-life clinical situations

Performance analysis of energy harvester excited with vibrations of a real system

    Get PDF
This thesis deals with the problematic of vibration generator settings. It includes analysis of generator as linear system and the performance of generator as function of its own frequency is calculated in the Matlab software, this is also verified on the real data sample. The influence of the generator on the basics body is tested

Demystifying Theoretical Sampling in Grounded Theory Research

    Get PDF
Theoretical sampling is a central tenet of classic grounded theory and is essential to the development and refinement of a theory that is ‘grounded’ in data. While many authors appear to share concurrent definitions of theoretical sampling, the ways in which the process is actually executed remain largely elusive and inconsistent. As such, employing and describing the theoretical sampling process can present a particular challenge to novice researchers embarking upon their first grounded theory study. This article has been written in response to the challenges faced by the first author whilst writing a grounded theory proposal. It is intended to clarify theoretical sampling for new grounded theory researchers, offering some insight into the practicalities of selecting and employing a theoretical sampling strategy. It demonstrates that the credibility of a theory cannot be dissociated from the process by which it has been generated and seeks to encourage and challenge researchers to approach theoretical sampling in a way that is apposite to the core principles of the classic grounded theory methodology

Communicative Barriers to Climate Change Adaptation: Exploring Ideology in the Calgary Herald

    Get PDF
This major research paper explores how climate change is discussed in the Calgary Herald and what some of the potential implications might be for such discourse. I argue that communication about climate change must be altered in order to generate widespread public understanding. First, I argue that climate change must be regarded as an issue of social justice if it is to gain any traction as a social movement. Next, I review the current state of governmental and environmental action within Alberta. Then efforts are directed towards explaining the importance of communication, and in particular, how certain texts can be ideologically constrained. A content analysis and a critical discourse analysis are conducted on a sample of articles from the Calgary Herald that include the term climate change. Finally, suggestions are made to help readers improve communications on the subject, reduce their carbon footprint, and support sustainability

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF A CORN-SOYBEAN CROP ROTATION UNDER VARIOUS INPUT COMBINATIONS IN SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS

    Get PDF
Eight input combinations of commercial fertilizer, insecticides, and herbicides on a corn-soybean crop rotation in the Brazos River Bottom of Texas are evaluated. Input combinations which do not fully utilize all three inputs are consistently ranked higher by all criteria as the preferred input strategy for the corn-soybean rotation system. These results, which indicate limited input crop rotations that fall somewhere between the extremes of conventional agricultural production and organic agriculture, deserve further attention as a possible production alternative.corn, limited input, soybean, Crop Production/Industries,
