    Investigation of diffusion of rejuvenator in aged asphalt

    AbstractRecycling asphalt pavement creates a cycle of reusing materials that optimize the use of natural resources. For optimal rejuvenation of the aged binder, the diffusion rate of the rejuvenator should be considered. However, the diffusion mechanism between the rejuvenator and aged asphalt is still far from understood. In this study, two experimental methods were conducted to research the diffusion of rejuvenator in aged asphalt. The two asphalt binders were identical in terms of asphalt A7 (60/80 pen) and asphalt A11 (100/120 pen) and two rejuvenators were identical in terms of RA (containing 90% alkyl aromatic oil and 10% saturate oil), and RS (containing 10% alkyl aromatic oil and 90% saturate oil). Experimental results indicated that two experimental methods are also an effective means to research the diffusion of rejuvenator in asphalt in spite of a slight difference. The effect of temperature on the diffusion coefficient is large and the effect of layer thickness of the rejuvenator on diffusion coefficient is obviously not. The rejuvenator RA has a high diffusion rate in asphalt over a wide range of temperatures. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of rejuvenator in asphalt A11 is larger than that in asphalt A7. The test data suggested that the use of rejuvenator with high diffusion is a viable option for recycling old asphalt mixture

    Iteratively Coupled Multiple Instance Learning from Instance to Bag Classifier for Whole Slide Image Classification

    Whole Slide Image (WSI) classification remains a challenge due to their extremely high resolution and the absence of fine-grained labels. Presently, WSIs are usually classified as a Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) problem when only slide-level labels are available. MIL methods involve a patch embedding process and a bag-level classification process, but they are prohibitively expensive to be trained end-to-end. Therefore, existing methods usually train them separately, or directly skip the training of the embedder. Such schemes hinder the patch embedder's access to slide-level labels, resulting in inconsistencies within the entire MIL pipeline. To overcome this issue, we propose a novel framework called Iteratively Coupled MIL (ICMIL), which bridges the loss back-propagation process from the bag-level classifier to the patch embedder. In ICMIL, we use category information in the bag-level classifier to guide the patch-level fine-tuning of the patch feature extractor. The refined embedder then generates better instance representations for achieving a more accurate bag-level classifier. By coupling the patch embedder and bag classifier at a low cost, our proposed framework enables information exchange between the two processes, benefiting the entire MIL classification model. We tested our framework on two datasets using three different backbones, and our experimental results demonstrate consistent performance improvements over state-of-the-art MIL methods.     Impact of grazing on shaping abundance and composition of active methanotrophs and methane oxidation activity in a grassland soil

    The effect of grazing on the abundance, composition, and methane (CH4) uptake of methanotrophs in grasslands has been well documented in the past few decades, but the dominant communities of active methanotrophs responsible for CH4 oxidation activity in grazed soils are still poorly understood. In this study, we characterized the metabolically active, aerobic methanotrophs in grasslands with three different levels of grazing (light, medium, and heavy) by combining DNA-stable isotope probing (SIP) and quantitative PCR (qPCR) for methane monooxygenase (pmoA) gene– and 16S rRNA gene–based amplicon sequencing. The CH4 oxidation potential was as low as 0.51 μmol g dry weight−1 day−1 in the ungrazed control, while it decreased as grazing intensity increased in grazed fields, ranging from 2.25 μmol g dry weight−1 day−1 in light grazed fields to 1.59 in heavily grazed fields. Increased CH4 oxidation activity was paralleled by twofold increases in abundance of pmoA genes and relative abundance of methanotroph-affiliated 16S rRNA genes in the total microbial community in grazed soils. SIP and sequencing revealed that the genera Methylobacter and Methylosarcina (type I; Gammaproteobacteria) and Methylocystis (type II; Alphaproteobacteria) were active methanotrophs responsible for CH4 oxidation in grazed soils. Light and intermediate grazing stimulated the growth and activity of methanotrophs, while heavy grazing decreased the abundance and diversity of the active methanotrophs in the typical steppe. Redundancy and correlation analysis further indicated that the variation of bulk density and soil C and N induced by grazing determined the abundance, diversity of active methanotrophs, and methane oxidation activity in the long-term grazed grassland soil

    Lipidomics Reveals Early Metabolic Changes in Subjects with Schizophrenia: Effects of Atypical Antipsychotics

    There is a critical need for mapping early metabolic changes in schizophrenia to capture failures in regulation of biochemical pathways and networks. This information could provide valuable insights about disease mechanisms, trajectory of disease progression, and diagnostic biomarkers. We used a lipidomics platform to measure individual lipid species in 20 drug-naïve patients with a first episode of schizophrenia (FE group), 20 patients with chronic schizophrenia that had not adhered to prescribed medications (RE group), and 29 race-matched control subjects without schizophrenia. Lipid metabolic profiles were evaluated and compared between study groups and within groups before and after treatment with atypical antipsychotics, risperidone and aripiprazole. Finally, we mapped lipid profiles to n3 and n6 fatty acid synthesis pathways to elucidate which enzymes might be affected by disease and treatment. Compared to controls, the FE group showed significant down-regulation of several n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including 20:5n3, 22:5n3, and 22:6n3 within the phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine lipid classes. Differences between FE and controls were only observed in the n3 class PUFAs; no differences where noted in n6 class PUFAs. The RE group was not significantly different from controls, although some compositional differences within PUFAs were noted. Drug treatment was able to correct the aberrant PUFA levels noted in FE patients, but changes in re patients were not corrective. Treatment caused increases in both n3 and n6 class lipids. These results supported the hypothesis that phospholipid n3 fatty acid deficits are present early in the course of schizophrenia and tend not to persist throughout its course. These changes in lipid metabolism could indicate a metabolic vulnerability in patients with schizophrenia that occurs early in development of the disease. © 2013 McEvoy et al

    Epidemiology of recurrent hand, foot and mouth disease, China, 2008–2015

    Using China’s national surveillance data on hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) for 2008–2015, we described the epidemiologic and virologic features of recurrent HFMD. A total of 398,010 patients had HFMD recurrence; 1,767 patients had 1,814 cases of recurrent laboratory-confirmed HFMD: 99 reinfections of enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) with EV-A71, 45 of coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) with CV-A16, 364 of other enteroviruses with other enteroviruses, 383 of EV-A71 with CV-A16 and CV-A16 with EV-A71, and 923 of EV-A71 or CV-A16 with other enteroviruses and other enteroviruses with EV-A71 or CV-A16. The probability of HFMD recurrence was 1.9% at 12 months, 3.3% at 24 months, 3.9% at 36 months, and 4.0% at 38.8 months after the primary episode. HFMD severity was not associated with recurrent episodes or time interval between episodes. Elucidation of the mechanism underlying HFMD recurrence with the same enterovirus serotype and confirmation that HFMD recurrence is not associated with disease severity is needed. © 2018, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
