The recent discovery of Perkinsus honshuensis, a new Perkinsus species infecting Manila clams Ruditapes philippinarum (Sowerby, 1852), in Japan, suggested that, based on proximity, P. honshuensis could also be in Korean waters, where to date, P. olseni was believed to be the only Perkinsus species present. Perkinsus sp. infections consistently occurred among Ruditapes variegatus clams on a pebble beach on Jeju Island, off the south coast of Korea. The typical \u27signet ring\u27 morphology of the parasite was observed in the connective tissue of the digestive gland, and infection intensity was comparatively low (3.3 x 10(3) +/- 1.2 x 10(4) to 1.3 x 10(4) +/- 6.1 x 10(4) cells g(-1) gill weight). Further DNA analyses of internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1, 5.8S and ITS-2) and non-transcribed spacer (NTS) regions of the parasite showed 98.9-99.8 and 98.5-99.5% similarity to those of P. honshuensis from Japan, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses using ITS and NTS sequences indicated that Perkinsus sp. from Jeju formed a highly supported clade with P. honshuensis. This is the first report of P. honshuensis infections in clams in Korean waters and the first report of R. variegatus as a host for that parasite

Successful small bowel allotransplantation in dogs with cyclosporine and prednisone

    Get PDF
Twelve dogs had transplantation of almost the entire small intestine in the orthotopic location; immunosuppression was with cyclosporine and prednisone. Half the dogs had survival of at least one month, and a third lived for at least four months. Two of the animals are still living after 550 and 555 days. Maintenance of nutrition, and absorption of D-xylose and fat were better than in control animals with an iatrogenic short gut syndrome, but distinctly worse than that of normal dogs. Eating behaviour and its associations with overweight among nurses on shift duty in teaching hospital

    Get PDF
Overweight and obesity have become a global concern and estimated with more than 1.9 billion adults worldwide were overweight and more than 650 million were obese in 2016. Nurses in Malaysia were no exception to overweight and obesity. This research was conducted with the aim to identify the prevalence of overweight among nurses on shift duty in a teaching hospital and to understand the relationship between abnormal eating behavior and body mass index. A total of 280 respondents participated in this research and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire was used. Body Mass Index (BMI) score was categorized according to Clinical Practice Guidelines 2004. Results showed that 68.5% of the nurses were either overweight (37.1%) or obese (31.4%). The nursesā€™ BMI does not showed any association with socio-demographic data except age (r=0.156). As age increases, the nursesā€™ BMI also increase. This research also showed that there was no association between emotional and external eating behavior to BMI. However, there was a statistically significant differences in BMI for restraint eating (F=6.056, p=0.003). In conclusion, restraint eating behavior was the most practiced form of eating behavior in an attempt to achieve the ideal body weight but unfortunately lead to overweight among the nurses. Overweight or obese nurses will have a negative impression to the society and even reduce their confidence towards nursesā€™ health education. Overweight or obesity also ruined the nursesā€™ working performance and quality of care for patients. This issue requires immediate action and interventions to promote healthy lifestyles and eating habits among nurses should be conducted in the hospital

Structure and dielectric properties of cubic Bi<inf>2</inf>(Zn <inf>1/3</inf>Ta<inf>2/3</inf>)<inf>2</inf> O<inf>7</inf> thin films

Pyrochlore Bi2(Zn1/3Ta2/3)2 O7 (BZT) films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates. In contrast to bulk monoclinic BZT ceramics, the BZT films have a cubic structure mediated by an interfacial layer. The dielectric properties of the cubic BZT films [Īµāˆ¼177, temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC) āˆ¼-170 ppm/Ā°C] are much different from those of monoclinic BZT ceramics (Īµāˆ¼61, TCC āˆ¼+60 ppm/Ā°C). Increasing the thickness of the BZT films returns the crystal structure to the monoclinic phase, which allows the dielectric properties of the BZT films to be tuned without changing their chemical composition. Physical origin of residual thermal stresses in a multilayer ceramic capacitor

    Get PDF
The physical origin of the residual stresses developed in the ceramic layer of the active region in a multilayer ceramic capacitor was numerically investigated. The compressive in-plane stress components Ļƒ11 and Ļƒ22 originate without regard to the presence of the margins but rather from the difference in in-plane thermal shrinkage between ceramic and metal electrode. The out-of-plane stress component Ļƒ33 physically originates mainly through the presence of the housing margin; the presence of the lateral margin is a minor source: the more ceramic-rich margins hinder the apparent vertical shrinkage of the active region to yield tensile Ļƒ33. Reversible change in electrical and optical properties in epitaxially grown Al-doped ZnO thin films

Aluminum-doped ZnO (AZO) films were epitaxially grown on sapphire (0001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. As-deposited AZO films had a low resistivity of 8.01Ɨ 10-4 Ī© cm. However, after annealing at 450 Ā°C in air, the electrical resistivity of the AZO films increased to 1.97Ɨ 10-1 Ī© cm because of a decrease in the carrier concentration. Subsequent annealing of the air-annealed AZO films in H2 recovered the electrical conductivity of the AZO films. In addition, the conductivity change was reversible upon repeated air and H2 annealing. A photoluminescence study showed that oxygen interstitial (Oiā€²) is a critical material parameter allowing for the reversible control of the electrical conducting properties of AZO films. Seed-layer mediated orientation evolution in dielectric Bi-Zn-Ti-Nb-O thin films

Highly (hhh) -oriented pyrochlore Bi-Zn-Ti-Nb-O (BZTN) thin films were fabricated via metal-organic decomposition using orientation template layers. The preferred orientation was ascribed to the interfacial layer, the lattice parameter of which is similar to BZTN. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy supported that the interfacial layer consists of Bi and Pt. The (hhh) -oriented thin films exhibited a highly insulating nature enabling feasible applications in electronic devices, particularly voltage tunable application. The BZTN thin films did not show any apparent dielectric anisotropy and the slightly enhanced dielectric properties were discussed in connection to the internal stress and the grain boundary effect. Total pancreaticoduodenal homotransplantation in dogs immunosuppressed with cyclosporine and steroids

    Get PDF
Pancreaticoduodenal transplantation was performed with cyclosporine and steroid immunosuppressive therapy in 10 mongrel dogs that had pancreaticoduodenectomy. There was an average animal survival of 50.6 days and an average duration of normoglycemia of 41.8 days. We suggest that pancreaticoduodenal transplantation, which was abandoned as a clinical procedure 10 years ago, be reconsidered for clinical application. Ā© 1984

Serration phenomena occurring during tensile tests of three high-manganese TWinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steels

    Get PDF
In this study, the serration phenomena of two high-Mn TWIP steels and an Al-added TWIP steel were examined by tensile tests, and were explained by the microstructural evolution including formation of localized Portevin-Le Chatelier deformation bands and twins. In stress-strain curves of the high-Mn steels, serrations started in a fine and short shape, and their height and periodic interval increased with increasing strain, whereas the Al-added steel did not show any serrations. According to digital images of strain rate and strain obtained from a vision strain gage system, deformation bands were initially formed at the upper region of the gage section, and moved downward along the tensile loading direction. The time when the band formation started was matched with the time when one serration occurred in the stress-time curve. This serration behavior was generally explained by dynamic strain aging, which was closely related with the formation of deformation bands.
