    Performance Evaluation of Individual Aircraft Based Advisory Concept for Surface Management

    Surface operations at airports in the US are based on tactical operations, where departure aircraft primarily queue up and wait at the departure runways. NASA's Spot And Runway Departure Advisor (SARDA) tool was developed to address these inefficiencies through Air Traffic Control Tower advisories. The SARDA system is being updated to include collaborative gate hold, either tactically or strategically. This paper presents the results of the human-in-the-loop evaluation of the tactical gate hold version of SARDA in a 360 degree simulated tower setting. The simulations were conducted for the east side of the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. The new system provides gate hold, ground controller and local controller advisories based on a single scheduler. Simulations were conducted with SARDA on and off, the off case reflecting current day operations with no gate hold. Scenarios based on medium (1.2x current levels) and heavy (1.5x current levels) traffic were explored. Data collected from the simulation was analyzed for runway usage, delay for departures and arrivals, and fuel consumption. Further, Traffic Management Initiatives were introduced for a subset of the aircraft. Results indicated that runway usage did not change with the use of SARDA, i.e., there was no loss in runway throughput as compared to baseline. Taxiing delay was significantly reduced with the use of advisory by 45% in medium scenarios and 60% in heavy. Arrival delay was unaffected by the use of advisory. Total fuel consumption was also reduced by 23% in medium traffic and 33% in heavy. TMI compliance appeared unaffected by the advisor

    PERCEPTIONS OF ENGLISH-MAJORED STUDENTS IN THE HIGH-QUALITY PROGRAM AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY TOWARD LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH WATCHING MOVIES

    This descriptive study aims to answer three main research questions, namely 1) What are the perceptions of English-majored students regarding the impact of watching English movies on their learning motivation?, 2) What are their perceptions of the impact of watching English movies on their language development?, and 3) What challenges do the students encounter when learning English through watching movies? In order to address these key questions, the data collected from 175 freshmen and juniors majoring in English Studies of the High-Quality Program at Can Tho University through a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire were quantitatively analyzed. The statistical analysis of the gathered data revealed that all the study participants strongly agreed with the positive impacts of watching English movies on their motivations to learn the target language as well as on their language development. Despite these positive effects, the students also admitted that they inevitably encountered several challenges while learning English through movie-watching, particularly in terms of rapid speech, extensive use of slang, and figurative language in English movies. Based on these research outcomes, possible implications have been further discussed for the effective use of movies in EFL classrooms to support the students’ learning process.  Article visualizations

    Some chemical constituents isolated from Acorus tatarinowii Shott.

    Anew 8,1′-neolignan, tatarinone, 4-[2-(1,2,3-trimethoxybenz-5-yl)-1-methylethyl]-2,5-dimethoxy-4-(2-propenyl)-2,5-cyclohexadien-1-one, has been isolated from Acorus tatarinowii rhizome and  its structure determined by spectroscopic methods, including 2D-NMR spectra. Asarylaldehyde and a mixture of α-asarone and β-asarone were also isolated and  indentified.Keywords: Acorus tatarinowii;Araceae; 8,1′-neolignans; asarylaldehyde; α-asarone; β-asarone; NMR

    Evolution of influenza A(H7N9) viruses from waves I to IV

    The H7N9 influenza virus that emerged in East China in early 2013 has caused 736 human infections with a fatality rate of 38.5%, through four outbreak waves. Our previous studies revealed that this virus was generated by reassortment between viruses from wild bird H7 and N9 viruses (surface genes) and poultry H9N2 viruses (internal genes), and that while the H7N9 wave I viruses had highly similar surface genes, the surface genes of the wave II viruses developed into regionally distinct clades. The H7N9 viruses continued to reassort with different H9N2 viruses to obtain internal gene segments, thereby generating multiple variants or genotypes. Our ongoing surveillance suggests that the H7N9 virus has become enzootic in chickens, and disseminated to most regions of China during waves III and IV of the outbreak. In this study, we have generated more than 800 H7N9 virus full genome sequences, and are analyzing these together with all genomes available in public databases. We are exploring the following scientific questions: (i) what is the continuing evolutionary behavior of the H7N9 virus lineage; (ii) what are the interactions or gene transfers between circulating H7N9 viruses and other enzootic influenza viruses, and the changes in genotypes over the four waves; (iii) what are the interactions among sub-lineages or clades, i.e. predominance and/or sub-lineage replacement; and (iv) what is the development and dissemination of the H7N9 viruses from a phylogeographic perspective. We hope that the information generated by this project will provide insights into methods to manage the development of the H7N9 outbreak and help to avert similar situations from arising.published_or_final_versio

    Construction of large-volume tissue mimics with 3D functional vascular networks

    We used indirect stereolithography (SL) to form inner-layered fluidic networks in a porous scaffold by introducing a hydrogel barrier on the luminal surface, then seeded the networks separately with human umbilical vein endothelial cells and human lung fibroblasts to form a tissue mimic containing vascular networks. The artificial vascular networks provided channels for oxygen transport, thus reducing the hypoxic volume and preventing cell death. The endothelium of the vascular networks significantly retarded the occlusion of channels during whole-blood circulation. The tissue mimics have the potential to be used as an in vitro platform to examine the physiologic and pathologic phenomena through vascular architecture.ope

    The emergence of the 2013 H7N9 and related viruses in China

    Promising Investigator ScholarshipPoster Session: News and Views from the H7N9 OutbreakBackground: The novel H7N9 influenza A virus first detected in March 2013 has caused more than 130 cases of human infection in China, resulting in 39 deaths. This virus is a reassortant of H7, N9 and H9N2 avian influenza viruses and carries some amino acids linked to mammalian receptor binding, raising concerns of a new pandemic. However, neither the source populations of the H7N9 outbreak lineage nor the conditions for its genesis are fully understood. Materials and Methods: Following the initial reports of H7N9 influenza infection in humans, field surveillance was conducted during 4th-18th April in Zhejiang, Shandong and Guangdong provinces. Pairs of oropharyngeal and cloacal samples from chickens and other poultry, together with faecal and water samples from live poultry markets (LPMs), farms and wetlands were collected for virus isolation and whole genomic sequencing. H7, N9, N7 and H9N2 archived isolates, obtained during previous influenza surveillance between 2000-2013 in southern China, were also sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed to pinpoint the genesis of the H7N9 and a related H7N7 virus. The infectivity and pathology of H7N9 and H7N7 viruses were tested in a ferret model. Results: Through a combination of active surveillance, screening of virus archives, and evolutionary analyses, we found that H7 viruses have independently transferred from domestic ducks to chickens in China on at least two occasions. Subsequently they reassorted with enzootic H9N2 viruses to generate the H7N9 outbreak lineage, and a related but previously unrecognized H7N7 lineage. The H7N9 outbreak lineage has spread over a large geographic region and is prevalent in chickens at LPMs that appear to be the immediate source of human infections. In ferrets this virus caused a productive infection and pneumonia. Virus was shed via the nasal route and transmitted to physical contact and some airborne-exposed animals. Like the H7N9 virus, the H7N7 virus was also mainly isolated from chickens at LPMs and it could efficiently infect ferrets, be shed via the nasal and rectal routes, and cause severe pneumonia. Conclusions: These findings provide a clear picture showing how the current H7N9 human viruses emerged. Domestic ducks act as primary vectors to acquire and maintain diversified viruses from migratory birds, and facilitate different subtype combinations between H7 and N9 or N7 viruses and interspecies transmissions to chickens. After being introduced, the H7N9 or H7N7 viruses reassorted with enzootic H9N2 viruses and formed the current reassortant H7N9 or H7N7 viruses seen in chickens. This likely led to outbreaks in chickens, resulting in the rapid spread of the novel reassortant H7N9 virus through LPMs, which then became the source of human infections. Whether the H7N9 outbreak lineage will, or has, become enzootic in China needs further investigation. Our results also indicate that H7 viruses pose a broader threat than the current H7N9 virus. Continued prevalence of this family of H7 viruses in poultry could lead to further sporadic human infections, with an ongoing risk that the virus might acquire efficient human-to-human transmissibility.published_or_final_versio

    Polymorphisms in the interleukin-10 gene cluster are possibly involved in the increased risk for major depressive disorder

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Innate immune inflammatory response is suggested to have a role in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD). Interleukin (IL)-10 family cytokines IL-10, IL-19, IL-20, and IL-24 are all implicated in the inflammatory processes and polymorphisms in respective genes have been associated with various immunopathological conditions. This study was carried out to investigate whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes are also associated with MDD.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Case-control association study was performed with seven SNPs from the <it>IL10 </it>gene cluster. 153 patients with MDD and 277 healthy control individuals were recruited.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>None of the selected SNPs were individually associated with MDD. The linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis indicated the existence of two recombination sites in the <it>IL10 </it>gene cluster, thus confirming the formerly established LD pattern of this genomic region. This also created two haplotype blocks, both consisting of three SNPs. Additionally, the haplotype analysis detected a significantly higher frequency of block 2 (<it>IL20 </it>and <it>IL24 </it>genes) haplotype TGC in the patients group compared to healthy control individuals (P = 0.0097).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study established increased risk for MDD related to the <it>IL20 </it>and <it>IL24 </it>haplotype and suggests that cytokines may contribute to the pathogenesis of MDD. Since none of the block 2 SNPs were individually associated with MDD, it is possible that other polymorphisms linked to them contribute to the disease susceptibility. Future studies are needed to confirm the results and to find the possible functional explanation.</p

    Effects of delayed remote ischemic preconditioning on peri-operative myocardial injury in patients undergoing cardiac surgery - A randomized controlled trial

    BACKGROUND: Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) has two time windows for organ protection: acute and delayed. Previous studies have mainly focused on the acute time window to evaluate organ protection by RIPC. We evaluated myocardial protection by delayed RIPC in adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS: A total of 160 adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass were randomized to receive either delayed RIPC (four cycles of 5 min of ischemia followed by 5 min of reperfusion by inflation to 200 mm Hg and deflation of a blood pressure cuff on the upper arm) or the control treatment 24–48 h before surgery. The primary endpoint was post-operative troponin I levels serially measured for 72 h. Secondary endpoints included post-operative serum creatinine levels, acute kidney injury, and composite complications. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in post-operative troponin I values. The incidence of acute kidney injury, defined by the Acute Kidney Injury Network staging system, was lower in the delayed RIPC group compared to the control group (30.0% vs. 47.5%; relative risk, 0.768; 95% confidence interval, 0.599–0.985; p = 0.023). Moreover, the occurrence of composite complications was lower in the delayed RIPC group compared with the control group (65.0% vs. 81.3%; relative risk, 0.536; 95% confidence interval, 0.311–0.924; p = 0.020). CONCLUSIONS: While RIPC did not provide cardioprotective effects in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, it appeared to reduce acute kidney injury, as well as the rate of composite complications

    The roles of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in colon tight junction protein expression and intestinal mucosa structure in a mouse model of acute liver failure

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a common clinical disease and one of the most severe complications of acute liver failure (ALF). Although the mechanism responsible for SBP is unclear, cytokines play an important role. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) on the structure of the intestinal mucosa and the expression of tight junction (Zona Occludens 1; ZO-1) protein in a mouse model of ALF.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We induced ALF using D-galactosamine/lipopolysaccharide (GalN/LPS) or GalN/TNF-α and assessed the results using transmission electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, ELISA and real-time quantitative PCR. The effects of administration of anti-TNF-α IgG antibody or anti-TNF-α R1 antibody before administration of GalN/LPS or GalN/TNF-α, respectively, on TNF-α were also assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Morphological abnormalities in the intestinal mucosa of ALF mice were positively correlated with serum TNF-α level. Electron microscopic analysis revealed tight junction (TJ) disruptions, epithelial cell swelling, and atrophy of intestinal villi. Gut bacteria invaded the body at sites where TJ disruptions occurred. Expression of ZO-1 mRNA was significantly decreased in both ALF models, as was the level of ZO-1 protein. Prophylactic treatment with either anti-TNF-α IgG antibody or anti-tumor necrosis factor-a receptor1 (anti-TNF-α R1) antibody prevented changes in intestinal tissue ultrastructure and ZO-1 expression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>TNF-α affects the structure of the intestinal mucosa, decreases expression of ZO-1, and affects the morphology of the colon in a mouse model of ALF. It also may participate in the pathophysiological mechanism of SBP complicated to ALF.</p

    Are C-Reactive Protein Associated Genetic Variants Associated with Serum Levels and Retinal Markers of Microvascular Pathology in Asian Populations from Singapore?

    Introduction:C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are associated with cardiovascular disease and systemic inflammation. We assessed whether CRP-associated loci were associated with serum CRP and retinal markers of microvascular disease, in Asian populations.Methods:Genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) for serum CRP was performed in East-Asian Chinese (N = 2,434) and Malays (N = 2,542) and South-Asian Indians (N = 2,538) from Singapore. Leveraging on GWAS data, we assessed, in silico, association levels among the Singaporean datasets for 22 recently identified CRP-associated loci. At loci where directional inconsistencies were observed, quantification of inter-ethnic linkage disequilibrium (LD) difference was determined. Next, we assessed association for a variant at CRP and retinal vessel traits [central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE) and central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE)] in a total of 24,132 subjects of East-Asian, South-Asian and European ancestry.Results:Serum CRP was associated with SNPs in/near APOE, CRP, HNF1A and LEPR (p-values ≤4.7×10-8) after meta-analysis of Singaporean populations. Using a candidate-SNP approach, we further replicated SNPs at 4 additional loci that had been recently identified to be associated with serum CRP (IL6R, GCKR, IL6 and IL1F10) (p-values ≤0.009), in the Singaporean datasets. SNPs from these 8 loci explained 4.05% of variance in serum CRP. Two SNPs (rs2847281 and rs6901250) were detected to be significant (p-value ≤0.036) but with opposite effect directions in the Singaporean populations as compared to original European studies. At these loci we did not detect significant inter-population LD differences. We further did not observe a significant association between CRP variant and CRVE or CRAE levels after meta-analysis of all Singaporean and European datasets (p-value >0.058).Conclusions:Common variants associated with serum CRP, first detected in primarily European studies, are also associated with CRP levels in East-Asian and South-Asian populations.
