    Gender difference in betel quid consumption levels and tobacco use among adults in Myanmar

    Several small scaled studies in Myanmar investigated determinants of betel quid chewing status but to better understand more complete profiles of betel quid chewing habits, this study investigated the associations of betel quid consumption levels with tobacco and sociodemographic factors using a nationally representative sample in Myanmar. A cross-sectional, secondary data analysis was conducted by using Myanmar demographic and health survey (MDHS) (2015-2016). Chi-square tests and multinomial logistic regression were performed with p-value<0.05 as significance. Men averagely chewed 5.59 (SD=8.229) pieces per day while women chewed 1.25 (SD=3.584) pieces. The prevalence of chewing daily pieces 1-2, 3-5 and 6+ were 7.9%, 17.1% and 34.2% for men and 6.1%, 8% and 7.1 %, respectively, for women. In multivariate analysis, low education, low family wealth, married, and urban were more likely to chew 6+ pieces per day relevant to no consumption in both genders, while a positive association with age was observed only in women. Tobacco use was associated with low consumption level (1-2 pieces), relative to no consumption in both genders. Therefore, this study underlined the need to improve knowledge on the dangers associated with betel quid chewing and tobacco use among socially disadvantaged populations and urban residents

    Case 2 : The Double Burden of Malnutrition: Challenges and Opportunities in Thailand

    Sanji Suresh, a senior-level researcher at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Institute of Health Development, received a document containing national child development survey data from Thailand. The data indicates that children under the age of five have high rates of being overweight and stunted. After seeing this literature, Sanji realizes that there is the potential for a double burden of malnutrition in Thailand. Sanji is tasked with identifying current initiatives and possible solutions to help address this dual burden. The country’s diverse sociodemographic data adds to the complications Sanji must account for to ensure the health of the children of Thailand. Being underweight in early childhood can predispose children to be overweight and have noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease later in life. Sanji understands that the establishment of healthful behaviours and physical activity patterns during early childhood are key to health promotion and act as protective factors against noncommunicable disease over the child\u27s life. Realizing the complexity of addressing such an immense problem, will Sanji be able to come up with suggestions to tackle it

    Factors Influencing Contraceptive Use Among Myanmar Migrant Women In Bangkok, Thailand: A Community-based Survey

    Objectives: Nowadays, more people are moving residence permanently or temporarily, and international migration is one of the dominant issues globally. During migration, the individuals may experience poverty and unavailability of health care services -- especially for women – and that leads to unmet need for reproductive health and inadequate access to contraception which increases risk of unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion. This study explored the level of contraceptive use and associated factors among Myanmar migrant women in Bangkok.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted during March to April, 2018, 314 women were selected by snowball sampling and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used for data analysis.Results: The prevalence of contraceptive use among women who were living with their husband/partner was 77.1%; oral pills and injection were the most common methods. The sample’s median age was 30 years (QD = 4.5 years), half of the respondents were ethnic Burmese (51.9%), and were covered by health insurance (47.5%). Only one-fourth of the women (25.5%) could communicate well in Thai. Predictors of contraceptive use include being younger than 25 years (AOR=9.6; 95% CI=3.07–31.59), having more than one child (AOR=8.5; 95% CI=2.72-26.37), having a supportive husband and friends, neighbors (AOR=4.9; 95% CI=2.43-10.26, AOR=4.2; 95% CI=1.96-8.89) having easy access to contraception (AOR=3.2; 95% CI=1.50–6.780) and being able to access contraception at local health outlets (AOR=12.9; 95% CI=4.01-41.93).Conclusion: The study suggests that provision of community and workplace education, health care services and initiation of help-lines in the Burmese language may increase visibility of reproductive health services and bridge the gap between the foreign migrants and the Thai public health system. Active male involvement in their partner’s reproductive health is an important source of support

    Transient Increase of Higher-Order Aberrations after Lateral Rectus Recession in Children

    The changes of higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after bilateral lateral rectus muscle recession were evaluated. Forty eyes of 20 children were enrolled and their wavefront information was assessed until postoperative 3 months. Even though the root mean square (RMS) of total aberration was not changed, the RMS of HOA was transiently increased at postoperative 1 week and returned to baseline level after 1 month. Among individual Zernike coefficient, secondary astigmatism, quadrafoil, secondary coma, secondary trefoil, and pentafoil showed similar tendency with the RMS of HOA. However, coma, trefoil, and spherical aberration were not changed. Regarding recession amount, it did not correlate with any Zernike coefficient. In summary, our data imply that the HOAs are transiently increased after lateral rectus recession surgery. These results are in collusion with previous reports that strabismus surgery induced transient corneal astigmatism

    Hu.4-1BB-Fc fusion protein inhibits allergic inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness in a murine model of asthma

    Purpose4-1BB (CD 137) is a costimulatory molecule expressed on activated T-cells. Repression by 4-1BB is thought to attenuate Th2-mediated allergic reactions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 4-1BB on allergic airway inflammation in a murine asthma model.MethodsBALB/c mice were sensitized to and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA). Hu.4-1BB-Fc was administered 1 day before the first OVA sensitization or 1 day after the second OVA sensitization. Following antigen challenge, airway responsiveness to methacholine was assessed and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid was analyzed. Total immunoglobulin (Ig) E, OVA-specific IgE, IgG1, and IgG2a levels in sera were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Lung pathology was also evaluated.ResultsIn mice treated with Hu.4-1BB-Fc before the first OVA sensitization, there was a marked decrease in airway hyperresponsiveness, total cell count, and eosinophil count in the BAL fluid. In addition, Hu.4-1BB-Fc treatment decreased serum OVA-specific IgG1 levels and increased serum IgG2a level significantly compared with the corresponding levels in mice sensitized to and challenged with OVA. Hu.4-1BB-Fc-treated mice also showed suppressed peribronchial and perivascular inflammatory cell infiltration. In contrast, treatment with Hu.4-1BB-Fc 1 day after sensitization had no effect on airway hyperresponsiveness and showed less suppression of inflammation in lung tissue.ConclusionAdministration of Hu.4-1BB-Fc can attenuate airway inflammation and hyperreactivity in a mouse model of allergic airway inflammation. In addition, administration before sensitization may be more effective. These findings suggest that 4-1BB may be a useful therapeutic molecule against asthma

    First-time comparison between NO2 vertical columns from GEMS and Pandora measurements

    The Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is a UV&ndash;visible spectrometer onboard the GEO-KOMPSAT-2B satellite launched into geostationary orbit in February 2020. To evaluate GEMS NO2 column data, comparison was carried out using NO2 vertical column density (VCD) measured using direct-sunlight observations by the Pandora spectrometer system at four sites in Seosan, South Korea, during November 2020 to January 2021. Correlation coefficients between GEMS and Pandora NO2 data at four sites ranged from 0.35 to 0.48, with root mean square errors (RMSEs) from 4.7 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 to 5.5 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 for cloud fraction (CF) &lt; 0.7. Higher correlation coefficients of 0.62&ndash;0.78 with lower RMSEs from 3.3 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 to 4.3 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 were found with CF &lt; 0.3, indicating the higher sensitivity of GEMS to atmospheric NO2 in less-cloudy conditions. Overall, GEMS NO2 column data tend to be lower than those of Pandora due to differences in representative spatial coverage, with a large negative bias under high-CF conditions. With correction for horizontal representativeness in Pandora measurement coverage, the correlation coefficients range from 0.69 to 0.81 with RMSEs from 3.2 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 to 4.9 &times; 1015 molec. cm-2 were achieved for CF &lt; 0.3, showing the better correlation with the correction than that without the correction.</p
