    Storage capacity of holographic associative memories

    The storage capacity of holographic associative memories is estimated. An argument based on the available degrees of freedom shows that the number of patterns that can be stored is limited by the space-bandwidth product of the hologram divided by the number of pixels in each pattern. A statistical calculation shows that if we attempt to store associations by multiply exposing the hologram, the cross talk among the stored items severely degrades the output fidelity. This confirms the storage capacity predicted by the degrees-of-freedom argument

    Based on recent work by Fox and Andersen (2006), this paper describes substantial extensions to the effects package for R to construct effect displays for multinomial and proportional-odds logit models. The package previously was limited to linear and generalized linear models. Effect displays are tabular and graphical representations of terms - typically high-order terms - in a statistical model. For polytomous logit models, effect displays depict fitted category probabilities under the model, and can include point-wise confidence envelopes for the effects. The construction of effect displays by functions in the effects package is essentially automatic. The package provides several kinds of displays for polytomous logit models.

    Mathematical Modeling of Product Rating: Sufficiency, Misbehavior and Aggregation Rules

    Many web services like eBay, Tripadvisor, Epinions, etc, provide historical product ratings so that users can evaluate the quality of products. Product ratings are important since they affect how well a product will be adopted by the market. The challenge is that we only have {\em "partial information"} on these ratings: Each user provides ratings to only a "{\em small subset of products}". Under this partial information setting, we explore a number of fundamental questions: What is the "{\em minimum number of ratings}" a product needs so one can make a reliable evaluation of its quality? How users' {\em misbehavior} (such as {\em cheating}) in product rating may affect the evaluation result? To answer these questions, we present a formal mathematical model of product evaluation based on partial information. We derive theoretical bounds on the minimum number of ratings needed to produce a reliable indicator of a product's quality. We also extend our model to accommodate users' misbehavior in product rating. We carry out experiments using both synthetic and real-world data (from TripAdvisor, Amazon and eBay) to validate our model, and also show that using the "majority rating rule" to aggregate product ratings, it produces more reliable and robust product evaluation results than the "average rating rule".Comment: 33 page

    A version of the Glimm method based on generalized Riemann problems

    We introduce a generalization of Glimm's random choice method, which provides us with an approximation of entropy solutions to quasilinear hyperbolic system of balance laws. The flux-function and the source term of the equations may depend on the unknown as well as on the time and space variables. The method is based on local approximate solutions of the generalized Riemann problem, which form building blocks in our scheme and allow us to take into account naturally the effects of the flux and source terms. To establish the nonlinear stability of these approximations, we investigate nonlinear interactions between generalized wave patterns. This analysis leads us to a global existence result for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with source-term, and applies, for instance, to the compressible Euler equations in general geometries and to hyperbolic systems posed on a Lorentzian manifold.Comment: 34 page

    Introns interrupt the continuity of many eukaryal genes, and therefore their removal by splicing is a crucial step in gene expression. Interestingly, even within Eukarya there are at least four splicing mechanisms. mRNA splicing in the nucleus takes place in two phosphotransfer reactions on a complex and dynamic machine, the spliceosome. This reaction is related in mechanism to the two self-splicing mechanisms for Group 1 and Group 2 introns. In fact the Group 2 introns are spliced by an identical mechanism to mRNA splicing, although there is no general requirement for either proteins or co-factors. Thus it seems likely that the Group 2 and nuclear mRNA splicing reactions have diverged from a common ancestor. tRNA genes are also interrupted by introns, but here the splicing mechanism is quite different because it is catalyzed by three enzymes, all proteins and with an intrinsic requirement for ATP hydrolysis. tRNA splicing occurs in all three major lines of descent, the Bacteria, the Archaea, and the Eukarya. In bacteria the introns are self-splicing (1-3). Until recently it was thought that the mechanisms of tRNA splicing in Eukarya and Archaea were unrelated as well. In the past year, however, it has been found that the first enzyme in the tRNA splicing pathway, the tRNA endonuclease, has been conserved in evolution since the divergence of the Eukarya and the Archaea.
