Compressed Data Structures for Dynamic Sequences
We consider the problem of storing a dynamic string over an alphabet
in compressed form. Our representation
supports insertions and deletions of symbols and answers three fundamental
queries: returns the -th symbol in ,
counts how many times a symbol occurs among the
first positions in , and finds the position
where a symbol occurs for the -th time. We present the first
fully-dynamic data structure for arbitrarily large alphabets that achieves
optimal query times for all three operations and supports updates with
worst-case time guarantees. Ours is also the first fully-dynamic data structure
that needs only bits, where is the -th order
entropy and is the string length. Moreover our representation supports
extraction of a substring in optimal time
Succinct Dictionary Matching With No Slowdown
The problem of dictionary matching is a classical problem in string matching:
given a set S of d strings of total length n characters over an (not
necessarily constant) alphabet of size sigma, build a data structure so that we
can match in a any text T all occurrences of strings belonging to S. The
classical solution for this problem is the Aho-Corasick automaton which finds
all occ occurrences in a text T in time O(|T| + occ) using a data structure
that occupies O(m log m) bits of space where m <= n + 1 is the number of states
in the automaton. In this paper we show that the Aho-Corasick automaton can be
represented in just m(log sigma + O(1)) + O(d log(n/d)) bits of space while
still maintaining the ability to answer to queries in O(|T| + occ) time. To the
best of our knowledge, the currently fastest succinct data structure for the
dictionary matching problem uses space O(n log sigma) while answering queries
in O(|T|log log n + occ) time. In this paper we also show how the space
occupancy can be reduced to m(H0 + O(1)) + O(d log(n/d)) where H0 is the
empirical entropy of the characters appearing in the trie representation of the
set S, provided that sigma < m^epsilon for any constant 0 < epsilon < 1. The

Characterization of carbon nanotubes synthesized from hydrocarbon-rich flame
The present study focuses on the characterization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesized from flame under an atmospheric condition. A laminar flame burner was utilized to establish a rich premixed propane/air flame at the equivalence ratio Φ = 1.8-2.2. The flame was impinged on a stainless steel wire mesh coated with nickel (Ni) catalyst to grow CNTs. Distribution and yield of the CNTs on the substrate were quantified. Carbon nanotubes formed on the substrate were harvested and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The FESEM micrograph showed that the CNTs produced were in disarray. The synthesized CNTs were an average of 50-60 nm in diameter while the length of the tubes was in the order of microns. TGA analysis showed that 75% of CNTs were present in the sample and the oxidation temperature was 510°C
Efficient Representation of Multidimensional Data over Hierarchical Domains
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-46049-9_19[Abstract] We consider the problem of representing multidimensional data where the domain of each dimension is organized hierarchically, and the queries require summary information at a different node in the hierarchy of each dimension. This is the typical case of OLAP databases. A basic approach is to represent each hierarchy as a one-dimensional line and recast the queries as multidimensional range queries. This approach can be implemented compactly by generalizing to more dimensions the k2k2 -treap, a compact representation of two-dimensional points that allows for efficient summarization queries along generic ranges. Instead, we propose a more flexible generalization, which instead of a generic quadtree-like partition of the space, follows the domain hierarchies across each dimension to organize the partitioning. Neonicotinoid-induced pathogen susceptibility is mitigated by Lactobacillus plantarum immune stimulation in a Drosophila melanogaster model
© 2017 The Author(s). Pesticides are used extensively in food production to maximize crop yields. However, neonicotinoid insecticides exert unintentional toxicity to honey bees (Apis mellifera) that may partially be associated with massive population declines referred to as colony collapse disorder. We hypothesized that imidacloprid (common neonicotinoid; IMI) exposure would make Drosophila melanogaster (an insect model for the honey bee) more susceptible to bacterial pathogens, heat stress, and intestinal dysbiosis. Our results suggested that the immune deficiency (IMD) pathway is necessary for D. melanogaster survival in response to IMI toxicity. IMI exposure induced alterations in the host-microbiota as noted by increased indigenous Acetobacter and Lactobacillus spp. Furthermore, sub-lethal exposure to IMI resulted in decreased D. melanogaster survival when simultaneously exposed to bacterial infection and heat stress (37 °C). This coincided with exacerbated increases in TotA and Dpt (IMD downstream pro-survival and antimicrobial genes, respectively) expression compared to controls. Supplementation of IMI-exposed D. melanogaster with Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC 14917 mitigated survival deficits following Serratia marcescens (bacterial pathogen) septic infection. These findings support the insidious toxicity of neonicotinoid pesticides and potential for probiotic lactobacilli to reduce IMI-induced susceptibility to infection
E-cigarette Addiction and Harm perception: Does initiation flavor choice matter?
Introduction
The 21st century was marked by a dramatic increase in adolescent e-cigarette use in the United States (US). The popularity of non-traditional flavor types, including fruit and pastry, is thought to contribute toward growing product use nationally, leading to a variety of federal and state regulations limiting the use of non-traditional flavors in the US. The relationship between flavor type and increased adolescent use suggests a possible link between flavor use and addiction and harm perception. This study assessed if the flavor type used when initiating e-cigarette use predicted addiction and harm perceptions. Methods
The study utilized data from the multi-wave youth Population Assessment of Tobacco Health Study. It explored the impact initiating e-cigarette use with traditional versus non-traditional flavor types among cigarette users on the outcome variables: e-cigarette addiction and harm perception. Both e-cigarette addiction and harm perception were measured using self-report, Likert scale questionnaires. Descriptive statistics characterized the study variables and linear regression analyses performed to test whether flavor initiation type is associated with addiction and harm perception. Results
The study sample consisted of 1,043 youth (weighted N = 1,873,617) aged 12 to 17 years who reported at least one instance of e-cigarette use. After adjusting for age, age of onset, sex, race and annual household income there was no statistically significant difference in addiction levels between those initiating with traditional versus non-traditional flavors (p = 0.294). Similarly, traditional versus non-traditional flavor initiation did not show a statistically significant difference in adolescent e-cigarette harm perceptions (p = 0.601). Conclusions
Traditionally flavored e-cigarette initiation produces similar risk for addiction and harm perceptions as non-traditionally flavored initiation. These findings suggest that banning non-traditional flavors alone may be ineffective in curbing e-cigarette addiction and harm perception. Additional research is needed to better understand which e-cigarette product characteristics and behaviors may be associated with greater addiction and reduced harm perceptions
Inequality of happiness in nations
The first comparison of happiness in nations took place in 1948 and involved 9 countries (Buchanan, 1953). A second comparative study in 1960 covered 14 nations (Cantril 1965) and this was followed by a global survey in 1975 carried out by Gallup (1976), in which happiness in all parts of the world was assessed. Today we have comparable data on happiness in 90 nations and for a dozen nations we also have time series of 40 to 25 years (Veenhoven 2004). These data provide the fuel for a rising number of publications on happiness in nations. Currently, the Bibliography of Happiness counts some 400 entries on this subject, 20% of which have been published over the last 5 years.
To date, all the studies have been focused on the level of happiness in nations, that is, on how happy citizens are in a country. In this special issue we look at the same data from a different perspective and focus on difference in happiness in nations, that is, on the degree of divergence with regard to happiness found among citizens in a particular country
Defining the gap between research and practice in public relations programme evaluation - towards a new research agenda
The current situation in public relations programme evaluation is neatly summarized by McCoy who commented that 'probably the most common buzzwords in public relations in the last ten years have been evaluation and accountability' (McCoy 2005, 3). This paper examines the academic and practitioner-based literature and research on programme evaluation and it detects different priorities and approaches that may partly explain why the debate on acceptable and agreed evaluation methods continues. It analyses those differences and proposes a research agenda to bridge the gap and move the debate forward

Repurposing Albendazole: new potential as a chemotherapeutic agent with preferential activity against HPV-negative head and neck squamous cell cancer.
Albendazole is an anti-helminthic drug that has been shown to exhibit anti-cancer properties, however its activity in head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) was unknown. Using a series of in vitro assays, we assessed the ability of albendazole to inhibit proliferation in 20 HNSCC cell lines across a range of albendazole doses (1 nM-10 μM). Cell lines that responded to treatment were further examined for cell death, inhibition of migration and cell cycle arrest. Thirteen of fourteen human papillomavirus-negative HNSCC cell lines responded to albendazole, with an average IC50 of 152 nM. In contrast, only 3 of 6 human papillomavirus-positive HNSCC cell lines responded. Albendazole treatment resulted in apoptosis, inhibition of cell migration, cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and altered tubulin distribution. Normal control cells were not measurably affected by any dose tested. This study indicates that albendazole acts to inhibit the proliferation of human papillomavirus-negative HNSCC cell lines and thus warrants further study as a potential chemotherapeutic agent for patients suffering from head and neck cancer
