From two cores of the central Arctic Ocean and the Southern Ocean (Weddell Sea) a new morphotype of the planktic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) (Ehrenberg) with "sausage" shaped final chambers (i.e. "Wurstkammer") is described. A comparison of these morphotypes in the two polar regions shows significant differences in shape and frequency during the last 70,000 years in the central Arctic Ocean and during the last 140,000 years in the Weddell Sea. In the central Arctic Ocean the frequency of wurstkammer specinlens call be correlated to that of the so-called kummerform specimens during the last 70,000 years; this correlation cannot be seen in a core from the Weddell Sea. The wurstkammer and kummerform specimens are interpreted as being end-members of a morphological progressional line. The abnormal chamber growth is probably an adaption to various environmental stress conditions found in the two polar regions during the last 70,000 in the Arctic and 140,000 years in the Antarctic, but the reasons for this abnormality are not yet fully understood

Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird über die Ergebnisse bei zwei denkbaren Klassifikationen in verschiedenen Therapiemotivationsgruppen berichtetThe author suggests a method and a "model test" for the classification of subjects on grounds on individual deviation from the assumption of repeated multi-nomial chance encounters and on grounds of individual maximallikelihood of membership in a certain group. The author reports on the results reached with two conceivable classifications into different therapy-motivation groups.

By varying the conflict between two alternatives the difficulty to give s. th. as an adequate reason for one's decisions was manipulated. 61 subjects aged 11 were tested to show by that whether their magic-animistic reasons for decisions only indicate their inability in finding well-founded reasons or indicate vaIidely their magic-animistic thinking. By asking for the lucky pip of the child the validity of the magic-animistic content of such reasonings should be investigated too. The data showed that answers which are classifled as magic-animistic, are related to the conflict between the alternatives and are given more often by subjects who reported to have a lucky pip and who considered it in their decisions than by subjects of two control groups.

Factors contributing to conductance and outcome of specific immunotherapy: Data from the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey 1998

Background: Allergies are an increasingly relevant public health problem. Specific immunotherapy (sIT) is presently the only causal treatment option. This study aimed to assess the frequency and determinants of sIT use and factors associated with treatment outcome. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis based on data from the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey 1998. Results: 2727 (39.2%) of study participants reported physician-diagnosed allergic disease. Among these, 16.5% (n ¼ 296) stated to have undergone sIT. In this subset 43.4% (n ¼ 129) reported improvement of symptoms, 21.9% (n ¼ 65) had not changed, and 34.6% (n ¼ 102) had discontinued treatment. The majority of patients treated with sIT showed multiple allergic symptoms and sensitisations. Factors significantly correlated with sIT treatment in multivariable analyses included rhinitis, asthma, several sensitisations, higher social status and residence in larger cities. Rhinitis and neurodermatitis were positively, and food allergy was negatively associated with the completion of sIT. No factors predicting improvement due to sIT could retrospectively be identified. Conclusion: Treatment with sIT under ‘real life’ conditions does not exactly follow current clinical guideline recommendations. In addition, patients may be selected for IT by socio-demographic factors. Whether this contributes to considerable discontinuation rates and limited effectiveness as observed here, needs further investigation.Peer Reviewe

Proteolytic cleavage of the extracellular domain affects signaling of parathyroid hormone 1 receptor

Parathyroid hormone 1 receptor (PTH1R) is a member of the class B family of G protein-coupled receptors, which are characterized by a large extracellular domain required for ligand binding. We have previously shown that the extracellular domain of PTH1R is subject to metalloproteinase cleavage in vivo that is regulated by ligand-induced receptor trafficking and leads to impaired stability of PTH1R. In this work, we localize the cleavage site in the first loop of the extracellular domain using amino-terminal protein sequencing of purified receptor and by mutagenesis studies. We further show, that a receptor mutant not susceptible to proteolytic cleavage exhibits reduced signaling to G(s) and increased activation of G(q) compared to wild-type PTH1R. These findings indicate that the extracellular domain modulates PTH1R signaling specificity, and that its cleavage affects receptor signaling

Toward a molecular profile of self-representation

Feeling embodiment over our body or body part has a major role in the understanding of the self and control of self-actions. Even though it is crucial in our daily life, embodiment is not an homogenous phenotype across population, as quantified by implicit and explicit measures (i.e., neuroimaging or self-reports). Studies have shown differences in neuropathological conditions compared to healthy controls, but also across healthy individuals. We discuss examples of self-perception differences, and the molecular origin of embodiment, focusing on clinical cases, during the first and second section. We then discuss two important questions in this molecular-to-embodiment relationship: (i) which are the molecular levels (and their associated techniques) that can be relevant to embodiment, and (ii) which are the most adequate experiments to correlate molecular profiles and embodiment quantification across individuals. Potential answers for both questions will be outlined during the third and fourth sections, respectively, in order to design a framework to study the molecular profile of body embodiment
