    Qualitative theory of differential equations

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references. The problem of stability is of primary concern in the qualitative theory of differential equations and has occupied mathematicians for the past century. The problem appears when considering solutions to the differential equation x-f(t,x) where x=( x1(t),…,xn(t) )T and f(t,x) is a nonlinear function of x1,…,xn. While no known method of solving this equation explicitly exists even for the case n=2, it is possible to discuss the qualitative properties of x1(t) and x2(t) where x1(t) and x2(t) denote, for example, the populations, at time t, of two competing species. The qualitative attributes under consideration include points of equilibrium and the question of the stability of solutions in neighborhoods of these points.B.S. (Bachelor of Science

Can a State Seize an Internet Gambling Website\u27s Domain Name? An Analysis of the Kentucky Case

The newly developed Internet gambling forum has produced myriad legal issues affecting state, federal, and international law. The difficulty in addressing the issues arises from the ubiquity of the Internet. Based on an analysis of the Kentucky Case, this Note argues that a state cannot seize an Internet gambling website’s domain name for violating that state’s laws. First, Kentucky did not have personal jurisdiction over the gambling domain names’ registrars to have authority to seize them. Second, Kentucky’s gambling statute violates the Commerce Clause. Part II provides background to and the facts underlying the Kentucky Case and its procedural posture. Part III discusses legislation—both federal legislation and Kentucky’s statute—affecting Internet gambling. Part IV addresses the critical jurisdictional and constitutional issues that arise when a state attempts to seize domain names. Finally, Part V articulates the rationale behind this Note’s argument that a state cannot seize an Internet gambling website’s domain name for violating a state law

A Feasibility Study of a Low-cost, Large-scale Thermal Treatment Process for Human Feces

To hygienically manage the global sanitation crisis, it is pertinent to develop new methods for treating human excreta. This thesis proposes a new design where human feces is stored in a steel shipping container that is subject to shortwave solar radiation that, according to theory, heats the enclosed excreta to temperatures that inactivate fecal pathogens. The feasibility of this design is analyzed by way of numerical and experimental modelling. The experimentally validated model is used to simulate the effectiveness of the design over the course of many days of irradiation. This study shows that a sufficient temperature distribution (i.e., T(x,y) \u3e 46 ĚŠ C) is not achieved within the enclosed feces after 200 days of irradiation but this cannot be concluded until a fullscale test of the prototype is completed. Models that utilize nighttime insulation predict that necessary temperatures are achieved after 117 to 136 days of irradiation

Sounding the Nile in Nubian Musical Expression

Nubians are indigenous peoples of the Nile River Valley whose ancient civilization parallels that of ancient Egypt. In 1964, 50,000 Egyptian Nubians were removed from their homeland along the Nile because of President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s initiative, the Aswan High Dam Project. With fertile lands and sacred temples doomed to inundation by the waters of what is now Lake Nassar, Nubians were resettled in government built villages that promised both preservation of culture and modern conveniences. What these riverine people received, in fact, were poorly constructed, unfinished dwellings located in the desert, more than five miles from the Nile. A repertoire of music evoking memory and a longing to return to the Nile homeland emerged during the years surrounding removal. I use the representational figuring of the Nile in these “Songs of Return” as a point of departure to explore my central research question: How do Nubian musicians sound the Nile in song-writing and performance. During fieldwork in Egypt summer 2018, I challenged a central tenet of my thesis: that music asserts presence and prior habitation in a way few other expressive forms can. My subsequent research findings, shared in this presentation, reveal how the Nile and its environment factor into Nubian music, not as subject or object “sounding” through lyrics that speak about the river; rather, through a “sounding” of the river rooted in ways of knowing (epistemological) and ways of being (ontological) that are tied to sensory perception, embodiment, and place
