Elections and strategic positioning games
We formalize the interplay between expected voting behavior and stragetic positioning behavior of candidates as a common agency problem in which the candidates (i.e. the principals) compete for voters (i.e. agents) via the issues they choose and the positions they take. A political situation is defined as a feasible combination of candidate positions and expected political payoffs to the candidates. Taking this approach, we are led naturally to a particular formalization of the candidates’ positioning game, called a political situation game. Within the context of this game, we define the notion of farsighted stability (introduced in an abstract setting by Chwe (1994)) and apply Chwe’s result to obtain existence of farsightedly stable outcomes. We compute the farsightedly stable sets for several examples of political situations games, with outcomes that conform to real-world observations
Networks and farsighted stability
We make two main contributions to the theory of economic and social network formation. First, we introduce the notion of a network formation network or a supernetwork. Supernetworks provide a framework in which we can formally define and analyze farsightedness in network formation. Second, we introduce a new notion of equilibrium corresponding to farsightedness. In particular, we introduce the notion of a farsightedly basic network as well as the notion of a farsighted basis, and we show that all supernetworks possess a farsighted basis. A farsightedly basic network contained in the farsighted basis of a given supernetwork represents a possible final resting point (or absorbing state) of a network formation process in which agents behave farsightedly, Given the supernetwork representation of the rules governing network formation and the preferences of the individuals, a farsighted basis contains networks which are likely to emerge and persist of individuals behave farsightedly

Assessing impacts to groundwater from CO2-flooding of SACROC and Claytonville oil fields in West Texas
Comparison of groundwater above two Permian Basin oil fields (SACROC Unit and
Claytonville Field) near Snyder, Texas should allow us to assess potential impacts of 30 years of
CO2-injection. CO2-flooding for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has been active at SACROC in
Scurry County since 1972. Approximately 13.5 million tons per year (MtCO2/yr) are injected
with withdrawal/recycling amounting to ~7MtCO2/yr. It is estimated that the site has accumulated
more than 55MtCO2; however, no rigorous investigation of overlying groundwater has
demonstrated that CO2 is trapped in the subsurface. Mineralogy of reservoir rocks at the
Claytonville field in southwestern Fisher County is similar to SACROC. CO2-EOR is scheduled
to begin at Claytonville Field in Fisher County in early 2007. Here we have the opportunity to
characterize groundwater prior to CO2-injection and establish baseline conditions at Claytonville.
Methods of this study will include: (1) examination of existing analyses of saline to fresh
water samples collected within an eight-county area encompassing SACROC and Claytonville,
(2) additional groundwater sampling for analysis of general chemistry plus field-measured pH,
alkalinity, and temperature, stable isotopic ratios of hydrogen (D/H), oxygen (18O/16O), and
carbon (13C/12C), and (3) geochemical equilibrium and flowpath modeling. Existing groundwater
data are available from previous BEG studies, Texas Water Development Board, Kinder Morgan
CO2 Company, and the U. S. Geological Survey. By examining these data we will identify
regional groundwater variability and focus additional sampling efforts. The objective of this study
is to look for potential impacts to shallow groundwater from deep CO2-injection. In the absence
of conduit flow from depth, we don’t expect to see impacts to shallow groundwater, but
methodology to demonstrate this to regulators needs to be established.

Relative Deprivation, Attitude Contrast Projection, and Opinion Certainty
This research examines social projection between relatively deprived groups and its effect on opinion certainty. In Study 1, disadvantaged and advantaged group members indicated their own attitudes on six issues, and then estimated the positions either of their in-group, their respective rival out-group, a control out-group, or they received no opportunity to project. As expected, disadvantaged participants projected attitudinal contrast onto their advantaged rival out-group. Negative thoughts about the rival mediated subsequent increments in opinion certainty. Alternatively, advantaged participants assumed moderate consensus with their disadvantaged rival. They also exhibited ambivalent out-group thoughts and low opinion certainty. Study 2 replicated the effect of disadvantaged status on contrast projection and opinion certainty. Discussion focuses on the different perspectives of relatively deprived groups
Older Adults and Forgoing Cancer Screening
Although there is a growing recognition that older adults and those with extensive comorbid conditions undergo cancer screening too frequently, there is little information about patients’ perceptions regarding cessation of cancer screening. Information on older adults’ views of screening cessation would be helpful both for clinicians and for those designing interventions to reduce overscreening
Strategic basins of attraction, the farsighted core, and network formation games
We make four main contributions to the theory of network formation. (1) The problem of network formation with farsighted agents can be formulated as an abstract network formation game. (2) In any farsighted network formation game the feasible set of networks contains a unique, finite, disjoint collection of nonempty subsets having the property that each subset forms a strategic basin of attraction. These basins of attraction contain all the networks that are likely to emerge and persist if individuals behave farsightedly in playing the network formation game. (3) A von Neumann Morgenstern stable set of the farsighted network formation game is constructed by selecting one network from each basin of attraction. We refer to any such von Neumann-Morgebstern stable set as farsighted basis. (4) The core of the farsighted network formation games is constructed by selecting one network from each basin of attraction containing a single network. We call this notion of the core, the farsighted core. We conclude that the farsighted core is nonempty if and only if there exists one farsighted basin of attraction containing a single network. To relate our three equilibrium and stability notions (basins of attraction, farsighted basis and farsighted core) to recent work by Jackson and Wolinsky (1996), we define a notion of pairwise stability similar to the Jackson-Wolinsky notion and we show that a farsighted core is contained in the set of pairwise stable networks. Finally, we introduce, via an example, competitative contracting networks and highlight how the analysis of these networks requires the new features of our network formation model

Identification of Remaining Oil Resource Potential in the Frio Fluvial/Deltaic Sandstone Play, South Texas
The Frio Fluvial/Deltaic Sandstone (Vicksburg Fault Zone) oil play of South Texas has produced nearly 1 billion stock tank barrels (BSTB) of oil, yet still contains about 1.2 BSTB of unrecovered mobile oil and an even greater amount of residual oil resources (1.5 BSTB). More than half of the reservoirs in this depositionally complex play have been abandoned, and large volumes of oil may remain unproduced unless advanced characterization techniques are applied to define incompletely drained and untapped reservoirs as suitable targets for near-term recovery. Interwell-scale geological facies models of Frio fluvial/deltaic reservoirs will be combined with engineering assessments and geophysical evaluations to characterize Frio fluvial/deltaic reservoir architecture, flow unit boundaries, and the controls that these characteristics exert on the location and volume of unrecovered mobile and residual oil. These results will lead directly to the identification of specific opportunities to exploit these heterogeneous reservoirs for incremental recovery by recompletion and strategic infill drilling. Reservoir attribute data were statistically analyzed from oil and gas fields throughout the geographic area covered by the Frio Fluvial/Deltaic Sandstone oil play. General reservoir attributes analyzed in detail included porosity, initial water saturation, residual oil saturation, net pay, reservoir area, and fluid characteristics. Statistical analysis of variance demonstrated no difference between oil reservoir attributes and gas reservoir attributes, indicating that oil and gas reservoirs are subsets of a larger genetically similar population. Probability functions that describe attribute frequency distributions were determined for use in risk-adjusting resource calculations. Functions preserving nonnegativity of matrices
The main goal of this work is to determine which entire functions preserve
nonnegativity of matrices of a fixed order -- i.e., to characterize entire
functions with the property that is entrywise nonnegative for every
entrywise nonnegative matrix of size . Towards this goal, we
present a complete characterization of functions preserving nonnegativity of
(block) upper-triangular matrices and those preserving nonnegativity of
circulant matrices. We also derive necessary conditions and sufficient
conditions for entire functions that preserve nonnegativity of symmetric
matrices. We also show that some of these latter conditions characterize the

How Much Does Money Matter in a Direct Democracy?
The fine-structure splitting of quantum confined InxGa1-x Nexcitons is investigated using polarization-sensitive photoluminescence spectroscopy. The majority of the studied emission lines exhibits mutually orthogonal fine-structure components split by 100-340 mu eV, as measured from the cleaved edge of the sample.
