Obstetric Outcomes Assessment for New Mainers

Referral Patterns for Pediatric Sports-Related Concussion in One New England Health Care System
Introduction: Patients with concussion may benefit from care provided by professionals from multiple disciplines based on the constellation of symptoms being reported. This study analyzed referral patterns from primary care and sports medicine clinicians for pediatric patients with sports-related concussion in one health care system.
Methods: A retrospective chart review identified referrals placed to physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, optometry, psychology, neuropsychology, audiology, neurology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, psychiatry, and sports medicine for pediatric patients with sports-related concussion. These patients were evaluated at MaineHealth family medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, pediatrics, and sports medicine clinics in southern Maine between February 2019 and June 2022.
Results: We identified 375 patients with concussions. These patients were most often evaluated by pediatrics (199; 53.1%) and sports medicine (160; 42.7%), with fewer evaluated by family medicine (28; 7.5%), internal medicine/pediatrics (8 patients; 2.1%), or internal medicine (6; 1.6%). The most common referrals were to physical therapy (40; 10.7%), sports medicine (21; 5.6%), psychology (11; 2.9%), and neurology (9; 2.4%). Sports medicine placed a significantly higher number of referrals (P \u3c .0001) than non-sports medicine disciplines.
Discussion: Compared to prior research, fewer referrals were placed in this cohort of patients with concussion. Possible explanations include a larger population of uncomplicated concussions, the more rural setting in which this study occurred, or a lack of awareness of resources for further concussion care.
Conclusions: Further investigation should be done to evaluate the causes of the reduced referrals and their impact on the recovery of pediatric athletes with concussion
Building Community Practice Competencies Globally through the Community Tool Box
People throughout the world are working together to improve conditions in which they live. Although the issues and resources vary by context, what people actually do to effect change—core competencies of assessment, planning, action, evaluation, and sustainability—may be quite similar. To examine what competencies may be most valued in community practice, this report uses data analytics for what users are accessing in the Community Tool Box http://ctb.ku.edu/. This free resource for community health and development, with over 1.7 million unique visitors annually from over 200 countries, showed a six-fold increase in users during the past year (from November 2011 to November 2012). When we examined what users were accessing, the results showed greater interest in some particular competencies such as assessing community needs and resources, developing strategic and action plans, and enhancing cultural competence. Patterns of use suggest that there may be core competencies valued by community members seeking to change conditions and outcomes that matter, which may help inform training and professional development for the millions of people worldwide working to promote health, human development, and social justice.

Resonance production in heavy ion collisions
Recent results of resonance production from RHIC at
200 GeV and SPS at 17 GeV are presented and discussed in
terms of the evolution and freeze-out conditions of a hot and dense fireball
medium. Yields and spectra are compared with thermal model predictions at
chemical freeze-out. Deviations in the low transverse momentum region of the
resonance spectrum of the hadronic decay channel, suggest a strongly
interaction hadronic phase between chemical and kinetic freeze-out. Microscopic
models including resonance rescattering and regeneration are able to describe
the trend of the data. The magnitude of the regeneration cross sections for
different inverse decay channels are discussed. Model calculations which
include elastic hadronic interactions between chemical freeze-out and thermal
freeze-out based on the K(892)/K and (1520)/ ratios suggest a
time between two freeze-outs surfaces of 4 fm/c. The difference
in momentum distributions and yields for the (1020) resonance
reconstructed from the leptonic and hadronic decay channels at SPS energy are
discussed taking into account the impact of a hadronic phase and possible

What do we learn from Resonance Production in Heavy Ion Collisions?
Resonances with their short life time and strong coupling to the dense and
hot medium are suggested as a signature of the early stage of the fireball
created in a heavy ion collision \cite{rap00,lut01,lut02}. The comparison of
resonances with different lifetimes and quark contents may give information
about time evolution and density and temperature of during the expanding of
fireball medium. Resonances in elementary reactions have been measured since
1960. Resonance production in elementary collisions compared with heavy ion
collisions where we expect to create a hot and dense medium may show the direct
of influence of the medium on the resonances. This paper shows a selection of

Does owning a pet protect older people against loneliness?
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Pet ownership is thought to make a positive contribution to health, health behaviours and the general well-being of older people. More specifically pet ownership is often proposed as a solution to the problem of loneliness in later life and specific 'pet based' interventions have been developed to combat loneliness. However the evidence to support this relationship is slim and it is assumed that pet ownership is a protection against loneliness rather than a response to loneliness. The aim of this paper is to examine the association between pet ownership and loneliness by exploring if pet ownership is a response to, or protection against, loneliness using Waves 0-5 from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA)

Individual common variants exert weak effects on the risk for autism spectrum disorders.
While it is apparent that rare variation can play an important role in the genetic architecture of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), the contribution of common variation to the risk of developing ASD is less clear. To produce a more comprehensive picture, we report Stage 2 of the Autism Genome Project genome-wide association study, adding 1301 ASD families and bringing the total to 2705 families analysed (Stages 1 and 2). In addition to evaluating the association of individual single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), we also sought evidence that common variants, en masse, might affect the risk. Despite genotyping over a million SNPs covering the genome, no single SNP shows significant association with ASD or selected phenotypes at a genome-wide level. The SNP that achieves the smallest P-value from secondary analyses is rs1718101. It falls in CNTNAP2, a gene previously implicated in susceptibility for ASD. This SNP also shows modest association with age of word/phrase acquisition in ASD subjects, of interest because features of language development are also associated with other variation in CNTNAP2. In contrast, allele scores derived from the transmission of common alleles to Stage 1 cases significantly predict case status in the independent Stage 2 sample. Despite being significant, the variance explained by these allele scores was small (Vm< 1%). Based on results from individual SNPs and their en masse effect on risk, as inferred from the allele score results, it is reasonable to conclude that common variants affect the risk for ASD but their individual effects are modest
