Helical states of nonlocally interacting molecules and their linear stability: geometric approach
The equations for strands of rigid charge configurations interacting
nonlocally are formulated on the special Euclidean group, SE(3), which
naturally generates helical conformations. Helical stationary shapes are found
by minimizing the energy for rigid charge configurations positioned along an
infinitely long molecule with charges that are off-axis. The classical energy
landscape for such a molecule is complex with a large number of energy minima,
even when limited to helical shapes. The question of linear stability and
selection of stationary shapes is studied using an SE(3) method that naturally
accounts for the helical geometry. We investigate the linear stability of a
general helical polymer that possesses torque-inducing non-local
self-interactions and find the exact dispersion relation for the stability of
the helical shapes with an arbitrary interaction potential. We explicitly
determine the linearization operators and compute the numerical stability for
the particular example of a linear polymer comprising a flexible rod with a
repeated configuration of two equal and opposite off-axis charges, thereby
showing that even in this simple case the non-local terms can induce
instability that leads to the rod assuming helical shapes.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figure

A -strand is a map for a Lie
group that follows from Hamilton's principle for a certain class of
-invariant Lagrangians. The SO(3)-strand is the -strand version of the
rigid body equation and it may be regarded physically as a continuous spin
chain. Here, -strand dynamics for ellipsoidal rotations is derived as
an Euler-Poincar\'e system for a certain class of variations and recast as a
Lie-Poisson system for coadjoint flow with the same Hamiltonian structure as
for a perfect complex fluid. For a special Hamiltonian, the -strand is
mapped into a completely integrable generalization of the classical chiral
model for the SO(3)-strand. Analogous results are obtained for the
-strand. The -strand is the -strand version of the
Bloch-Iserles ordinary differential equation, whose solutions exhibit dynamical
sorting. Numerical solutions show nonlinear interactions of coherent wave-like
solutions in both cases. -strand equations on the
diffeomorphism group are also introduced and shown

Coupling of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to a GaP waveguide
The optical coupling of guided modes in a GaP waveguide to nitrogen-vacancy
(NV) centers in diamond is demonstrated. The electric field penetration into
diamond and the loss of the guided mode are measured. The results indicate that
the GaP-diamond system could be useful for realizing coupled microcavity-NV

Impact of in-crop and soil residual herbicides on effective nitrogen fixation in field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)
Non-Peer ReviewedA three-year project was initiated in 2004 to examine the effects of residual herbicides
and registered “in-crop” herbicides, both soil and foliar applied, on N fixation and
consequent yield of field peas and chickpeas. Inoculation strategies were examined to
determine if inoculant formulation (i.e., peat powder versus granular inoculant)
influences the degree to which herbicides can affect N fixation. This research is ongoing and thus all results are considered preliminary. Preliminary results in field pea,
suggest that where herbicides had a negative effect on N fixation, the effects occurred at relatively early growth stages (i.e., soon after herbicide application) and were typically overcome at later growth stages. In addition, granular inoculants were associated with increased N fixation as compared to peat powder inoculants, and may have mitigated any negative herbicide effects. Chickpea incurred damage from the herbicides and all treatments had significantly less N fixation than the control. In general, results suggest that N fixation may be compromised if herbicides cause significant plant damage; however, improved weed control associated with herbicide application may counter the negative impact on early N fixation
In-flight absolute radiometric calibration of the thematic mapper
In order to determine temporal changes of the absolute radiometric calibration of the entire TM system in flight spectroradiometric measurements of the ground and the atmosphere were made simultaneously with TM image collections over the White Sands, New Mexico area. By entering the measured values in an atmospheric radiative transfer program, the radiance levels in four of the spectral bands of the TM were determined, band 1:0.45 to 0.52 micrometers, band 2:0.53 to 0.61 micrometers band 3:0.62 to 0.70 micrometers and 4:0.78 to 0.91 micrometers. These levels were compared to the output digital counts from the detectors that sampled the radiometrically measured ground area, thus providing an absolute radiometric calibration of the entire TM system utilizing those detectors

To determine the temporal changes of the absolute radiometric calibration of the entire system, spectroradiometric measurements of the ground and the atmosphere were made simultaneously with TM collections over White Sands, New Mexico. By entering the measured values in an atmospheric radiative transfer program, the radiance levels of the in four of the spectral bands of the TM were determined. Tables show values for the reflectance of snow at White Sands measured by a modular 8 channel radiometer, and values for exoatmospheric irradiance within the TM passbands, calculated for the Earth-Sun distance using a solar radiometer

Evaluating the Use of Digital Creativity Support by Journalists in Newsrooms
This paper reports the evaluation of a new digital support tool designed to increase journalist creativity and productivity in newsrooms. After outlining the tool’s principles, interactive features and architecture, the paper reports the installation and use of the tool over 2 months by 12 journalists in the newsrooms of 3 newspapers. Results from this evaluation revealed that tool use was associated with published news articles rated as more novel but not more valuable than published articles written by the same journalists without the tool. However, tool use did not increase journalist productivity. The evaluation results were used to inform future changes to the digital creativity support tool
Asymptotically exact mean field theory for the Anderson model including double occupancy
The Anderson impurity model for finite values of the Coulomb repulsion is
studied using a slave boson representation for the empty and doubly occupied
-level. In order to avoid well known problems with a naive mean field theory
for the boson fields, we use the coherent state path integral representation to
first integrate out the double occupancy slave bosons. The resulting effective
action is linearized using {\bf two-time} auxiliary fields. After integration
over the fermionic degrees of freedom one obtains an effective action suitable
for a -expansion. Concerning the constraint the same problem remains as
in the infinite case. For and
exact results for the ground state properties are recovered in the saddle point
approximation. Numerical solutions of the saddle point equations show that even

Intermittency in the Joint Cascade of Energy and Helicity
The statistics of the energy and helicity fluxes in isotropic turbulence are
studied using high resolution direct numerical simulation. The scaling
exponents of the energy flux agree with those of the transverse velocity
structure functions through refined similarity hypothesis, consistent with
Kraichnan's prediction \cite{Kr74}. The helicity flux is even more intermittent
than the energy flux and its scaling exponents are closer to those of the
passive scalar. Using Waleffe's helical decomposition, we demonstrate that the
existence of positive mean helicity flux inhibits the energy transfer in the
negative helical modes, a non-passive effect
