Nonlinear lattice model of viscoelastic Mode III fracture
We study the effect of general nonlinear force laws in viscoelastic lattice
models of fracture, focusing on the existence and stability of steady-state
Mode III cracks. We show that the hysteretic behavior at small driving is very
sensitive to the smoothness of the force law. At large driving, we find a Hopf
bifurcation to a straight crack whose velocity is periodic in time. The
frequency of the unstable bifurcating mode depends on the smoothness of the
potential, but is very close to an exact period-doubling instability. Slightly
above the onset of the instability, the system settles into a exactly
period-doubled state, presumably connected to the aforementioned bifurcation
structure. We explicitly solve for this new state and map out its
velocity-driving relation
Continuum field description of crack propagation
We develop continuum field model for crack propagation in brittle amorphous
solids. The model is represented by equations for elastic displacements
combined with the order parameter equation which accounts for the dynamics of
defects. This model captures all important phenomenology of crack propagation:
crack initiation, propagation, dynamic fracture instability, sound emission,

Phase-Field Model of Mode III Dynamic Fracture
We introduce a phenomenological continuum model for mode III dynamic fracture
that is based on the phase-field methodology used extensively to model
interfacial pattern formation. We couple a scalar field, which distinguishes
between ``broken'' and ``unbroken'' states of the system, to the displacement
field in a way that consistently includes both macroscopic elasticity and a
simple rotationally invariant short scale description of breaking. We report
two-dimensional simulations that yield steady-state crack motion in a strip

The validity and reliability of the CAMDEX-DS for assessing dementia in adults with Down syndrome in Brazil.
OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease occurs at a higher prevalence and an earlier age in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) than typically developing individuals. However, diagnosing dementia in individuals with intellectual disability remains a challenge due to pre-existing cognitive deficits. The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Brazilian version of the Cambridge Examination for Mental Disorders of Older People with Down's syndrome and Others with Intellectual Disabilities (CAMDEX-DS) for individuals with DS. METHODS: Two psychiatrists, working independently, evaluated 92 adults with DS ≥ 30 years of age. The concurrent validity of the CAMDEX-DS was analyzed in relation to the gold standard of established international criteria. In a subgroup of 20 subjects, the concurrent validity of the CAMDEX-DS was analyzed in relation to an independent objective assessment of cognitive decline over three years. We analyzed the inter-rater reliability of cognitive assessment. RESULTS: The diagnostic accuracy of the CAMDEX-DS compared to the gold standard was 96.7%. CAMDEX-DS-based diagnosis was considered consistent with cognitive decline. The probability of a participant with dementia having cognitive decline was 83%. Inter-rater reliability for the participant assessment was good, with a kappa of > 0.8 for 93% of the CAMDEX-DS items. CONCLUSION: The CAMDEX-DS can be considered the first valid and reliable instrument for evaluating dementia in adults with DS in Brazil. Its use in such individuals could improve clinical practice and research

Strong Lensing Analysis of A1689 from Deep Advanced Camera Images
We analyse deep multi-colour Advanced Camera images of the largest known
gravitational lens, A1689. Radial and tangential arcs delineate the critical
curves in unprecedented detail and many small counter-images are found near the
center of mass. We construct a flexible light deflection field to predict the
appearance and positions of counter-images. The model is refined as new
counter-images are identified and incorporated to improve the model, yielding a
total of 106 images of 30 multiply lensed background galaxies, spanning a wide
redshift range, 1.0z5.5. The resulting mass map is more circular in
projection than the clumpy distribution of cluster galaxies and the light is
more concentrated than the mass within . The projected mass profile
flattens steadily towards the center with a shallow mean slope of
, over the observed range,
r, matching well an NFW profile, but with a relatively high
concentration, . A softened isothermal profile
(\arcs) is not conclusively excluded, illustrating that
lensing constrains only projected quantities. Regarding cosmology, we clearly
detect the purely geometric increase of bend-angles with redshift. The
dependence on the cosmological parameters is weak due to the proximity of
A1689, , constraining the locus, .
This consistency with standard cosmology provides independent support for our
model, because the redshift information is not required to derive an accurate
mass map. Similarly, the relative fluxes of the multiple images are reproduced

A Prospective Study of the Association of Metacognitive Beliefs and Processes with Persistent Emotional Distress After Diagnosis of Cancer
Two hundred and six patients, diagnosed with primary breast or prostate cancer completed self-report questionnaires on two occasions: before treatment (T1) and 12 months later (T2). The questionnaires included: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; Impact of Events Scale; the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) and the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-revised. A series of regression analyses indicated that metacognitive beliefs at T1 predicted between 14 and 19 % of the variance in symptoms of anxiety, depression and trauma at T2 after controlling for age and gender. For all three outcomes, the MCQ-30 subscale ‘negative beliefs about worry’ made the largest individual contribution with ‘cognitive confidence’ also contributing in each case. For anxiety, a third metacognitive variable, ‘positive beliefs about worry’ also predicted variance in T2 symptoms. In addition, hierarchical analyses indicated that metacognitive beliefs explained a small but significant amount of variance in T2 anxiety (2 %) and T2 depression (4 %) over and above that explained by demographic variables, T1 symptoms and T1 illness perceptions. The findings suggest that modifying metacognitive beliefs and processes has the potential to alleviate distress associated with cancer
IL-21/type I interferon interplay regulates neutrophil-dependent innate immune responses to Staphylococcus aureus
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major hospital- and communityacquired pathogen, but the mechanisms underlying host-defense to MRSA remain poorly
understood. Here, we investigated the role of IL-21 in this process. When administered intratracheally into wild-type mice, IL-21 induced granzymes and augmented clearance of pulmonary
MRSA but not when neutrophils were depleted or a granzyme B inhibitor was added.
Correspondingly, IL-21 induced MRSA killing by human peripheral blood neutrophils.
Unexpectedly, however, basal MRSA clearance was also enhanced when IL-21 signaling was
blocked, both in Il21r KO mice and in wild-type mice injected with IL-21R-Fc fusion-protein. This
correlated with increased type I interferon and an IFN-related gene signature, and indeed antiIFNAR1 treatment diminished MRSA clearance in these animals. Moreover, we found that IFNb
induced granzyme B and promoted MRSA clearance in a granzyme B-dependent fashion. These
results reveal an interplay between IL-21 and type I IFN in the innate immune response to MRS
