    Counting Semilinear Endomorphisms Over Finite Fields

    For a finite field k and a triple of integers g \ge r \ge s \ge 0, we count the number of semilinear endomorphisms of a g-dimensional k-vector space which have rank r and stable rank s. Such endomorphisms show up naturally in the classification of finite flat group schemes of p-power order over k which are killed by p and have p-rank s, via Dieudonne theory

    How Do Teacher Qualifications Impact Student Achievement in Relation to the Achievement Model Established by the Mississippi Department of Education?

    The following study was conducted in a six-county geographical region and involved teachers from various high schools that taught classes which were involved in the subject area testing program. Each participant taught one of the four state-mandated subject area classes that are tested to determine achievement levels and accreditation ratings for each high school. The focus of the study was to collect information from each teacher regarding the qualifications they held during the 2009-2010 school year and to compare those qualifications with the mean scale score for each teacher’s subject area classes. The researcher focused on five separate teacher qualifications that were National Board Certification, years of experience, alternate route certification, level of degree and hours in content area. Twenty tests were conducted to test each qualification against the mean scale score from each subject area. Two of the test conducted produced statistically significant results. Teachers who held a National Board Certificate proved to have a statistically significant impact on test scores in English II with t(48) = 3.319, p = .002. Teachers who completed more that eighteen hours in mathematics also produced statistically significant results in Algebra I classes with t(47) = -2.349, p = .023. These two outcomes provide a solid foundation and support basis that school administrators can use to implement practices in teacher induction and teacher recruitment programs. A statistically significant impact on student achievement occurred in only 10% of the test during this project. Although a small percentage, the results provide educational leaders with a support basis that can be applied to current policy and practice. These results also leave the door open for future researchers to expand on the ideas explored during this project.     Design And Testing Validation Of An Extendable Pressurized Tunnel For An Inflatable Lunar Habitat

    In the design of the UND inflatable lunar habitat (ILH), the need for an extendable pressurized tunnel to link the habitat to a wheeled terrestrial vehicle (rover), and secure the connection between both elements is one of the critical problems to be solved in order to test the validity of the ILH concept. The design of an extendable pressurized tunnel is required in order to allow access to and from the rover without the use of pressure suits. It is expected than using an extendable tunnel will allow simple docking procedures. An experimental process is required to determine the best procedure to dock the pressurized rover with the habitat. This will be done by a number of tests to determine the docking position. Testing of the docking element, extension units, and docking position will be required. This will prove that this design of an extendable pressurized tunnel is a valid solution to the problem

    Benthic Macroinvertebrates as Indexes of Water Quality in the Upper Cuyahoga River

    Author Institution: Department of Biology and Center for Environmental Studies, The University of AkronThe upper Cuyahoga River in northeastern Ohio is the major source of domestic water for the City of Akron, an important recreational area, and a designated Ohio Scenic River. Indexes of water quality based on benthic invertebrate community composition indicate a wide range in water quality along the river, but overall water quality is relatively high compared to areas of the Cuyahoga River below Akron and to most nearby river systems. Highest quality areas are located in the most headwater region and in the lowermost region near Lake Rockwell. These areas are characterized by a large number of taxa (>50), moderate density of organisms (= 2,000/m2), high ratios of scraper-grazers to detritivores (>0.5), high ratios of amphipods to isopods, and less than 1% organic pollution-tolerant organisms. Moderate degradation of water quality due to organic sedimentation in these areas is indicated by large proportions of organic pollution-facultative organisms (27-66%), especially a great variety of chironomids. Lowest quality areas occur 1-2 km below waste water outfalls from small villages and below groups of rural streamside dwellings. These areas are characterized by up to 62% fewer species, very low ratios of amphipods to isopods (usually <2), and large proportions of organic pollution-facultative and tolerant organisms (43-95%), especially chironomids and oligochaetes

    An Intensive Observation of Calving at Helheim Glacier, East Greenland

    Calving of glacial ice into the ocean from the Greenland Ice Sheet is an important component of global sea level rise. The calving process itself is relatively poorly observed, understood, and modeled; as such, it represents a bottleneck in improving future global sea level estimates in climate models. We organized a pilot project to observe the calving process at Helheim Glacier in East Greenland in an effort to better understand it. During an intensive one-week survey, we deployed a suite of instrumentation including a terrestrial radar interferometer, GPS receivers, seismometers, tsunameters, and an automated weather station. This effort captured a calving process and measured various glaciological, oceanographic, and atmospheric parameters before, during, and after the event. One outcome of our observations is evidence that the calving process actually consists of a number of discrete events, spread out over time, in this instance over at least two days. This time span has implications for models of the process. Realistic projections of future global sea level will depend on accurate parametrization of calving, which will require more sustained observations
