Development and Testing of a 2-D Transfer CCD
This paper describes the development, operation,
and characterization of charge-coupled devices (CCDs) that feature an electrode structure that allows the transfer of charge both horizontally and vertically through the image area. Such devices have been termed two-dimensional (2-D) transfer CCDs (2DT CCDs), as opposed to the conventional devices, which might be called one-dimensional transfer CCDs, but in other respects are the same as conventional CCD devices. Batches of two different 2DT CCD test devices, featuring different electrode structures but with identical clocking operation in each case, were produced and
tested. The methodology of 2-D charge transfer in each of the device types is described, followed by a presentation of test results from the new CCDs. The ability of both 2DT CCD transfer electrode schemes to successfully transfer charge in both horizontal and vertical directions in the image section of the devices has been proven, opening up potential new applications for 2DT CCD use
Non-linear Spectroscopy of Sr Atoms in an Optical Cavity for Laser Stabilization
We study the non-linear interaction of a cold sample of strontium-88 atoms
coupled to a single mode of a low finesse optical cavity in the so-called bad
cavity limit and investigate the implications for applications to laser
stabilization. The atoms are probed on the weak inter-combination line \lvert
5s^{2} \, ^1 \textrm{S}_0 \rangle \,-\, \lvert 5s5p \, ^3 \textrm{P}_1 \rangle
at 689 nm in a strongly saturated regime. Our measured observables include the
atomic induced phase shift and absorption of the light field transmitted
through the cavity represented by the complex cavity transmission coefficient.
We demonstrate high signal-to-noise-ratio measurements of both quadratures -
the cavity transmitted phase and absorption - by employing FM spectroscopy
(NICE-OHMS). We also show that when FM spectroscopy is employed in connection
with a cavity locked to the probe light, observables are substantially modified
compared to the free space situation where no cavity is present. Furthermore,
the non-linear dynamics of the phase dispersion slope is experimentally
investigated and the optimal conditions for laser stabilization are
established. Our experimental results are compared to state-of-the-art cavity
QED theoretical calculations.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
The Secret Life of Oilbirds: New Insights into the Movement Ecology of a Unique Avian Frugivore
Background: Steatornis caripensis (the oilbird) is a very unusual bird. It supposedly never sees daylight, roosting in huge aggregations in caves during the day and bringing back fruit to the cave at night. As a consequence a large number of the seeds from the fruit they feed upon germinate in the cave and spoil. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we use newly developed GPS/acceleration loggers with remote UHF readout to show that several assumptions about the behaviour of Steatornis caripensis need to be revised. On average, they spend only every 3 rd day in a cave, individuals spent most days sitting quietly in trees in the rainforest where they regurgitate seeds. Conclusions/Significance: This provides new data on the extent of seed dispersal and the movement ecology of Steatornis caripensis. It suggests that Steatornis caripensis is perhaps the most important long-distance seed disperser in Neotropical forests. We also show that colony-living comes with high activity costs to individuals
Killer-cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptor gene linkage and copy number variation analysis by droplet digital PCR.
The Killer-cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptor (KIR) gene complex has considerable biomedical importance. Patterns of polymorphism in the KIR region include variability in the gene content of haplotypes and diverse structural arrangements. Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) was used to identify different haplotype motifs and to enumerate KIR copy number variants (CNVs). ddPCR detected a variety of KIR haplotype configurations in DNA from well-characterized cell lines. Mendelian segregation of ddPCR-estimated KIR2DL5 CNVs was observed in Gambian families and CNV typing of other KIRs was shown to be accurate when compared to an established quantitative PCR method
Illusory Increases in Font Size Improve Letter Recognition
Visual performance of human observers depends not only on the optics of the eye and early sensory encoding but also on subsequent cortical processing and representations. In two experiments, we demonstrated that motion adaptation can enhance as well as impair visual acuity. Observers who experienced an expanding motion aftereffect exhibited improved letter recognition, whereas observers who experienced a contracting motion aftereffect showed impaired letter recognition. We conclude that illusory enlargement and shrinkage of a visual stimulus can modulate visual acuity
Eccentric lamellar keratolimbal grafts harvested with a manually guided microkeratome
Background: To perform lamellar keratolimbal allograft transplantation in a one- step procedure with a single graft, we investigated the feasibility of harvesting eccentric lamellar keratolimbal grafts from conventionally processed corneoscleral buttons using a manually guided microkeratome in conjunction with an artificial anterior chamber system. Methods: We used the Moria LSK- One microkeratome and the automated lamellar therapeutic keratoplasty ( ALTK) system ( Antony, France). Ten human donor eyes were used to obtain single- piece lamellar keratolimbal grafts. Specimens were processed for light and electron microscopy. Results: Eccentric keratolimbal grafts could be obtained from all human donor buttons. Grafts include a crescent- shaped limbal and a large corneal portion. No visible damage to the limbal region was discernible. Conclusion: Our data show that the LSK- One microkeratome in conjunction with the ALTK system allows harvesting eccentric keratolimbal grafts from donor corneoscleral buttons. Copyright (c) 2007 S. A skeletonization algorithm for gradient-based optimization
The skeleton of a digital image is a compact representation of its topology,
geometry, and scale. It has utility in many computer vision applications, such
as image description, segmentation, and registration. However, skeletonization
has only seen limited use in contemporary deep learning solutions. Most
existing skeletonization algorithms are not differentiable, making it
impossible to integrate them with gradient-based optimization. Compatible
algorithms based on morphological operations and neural networks have been
proposed, but their results often deviate from the geometry and topology of the
true medial axis. This work introduces the first three-dimensional
skeletonization algorithm that is both compatible with gradient-based
optimization and preserves an object's topology. Our method is exclusively
based on matrix additions and multiplications, convolutional operations, basic
non-linear functions, and sampling from a uniform probability distribution,
allowing it to be easily implemented in any major deep learning library. In
benchmarking experiments, we prove the advantages of our skeletonization
algorithm compared to non-differentiable, morphological, and
neural-network-based baselines. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of our
algorithm by integrating it with two medical image processing applications that
use gradient-based optimization: deep-learning-based blood vessel segmentation,
and multimodal registration of the mandible in computed tomography and magnetic
resonance images.Comment: Accepted at ICCV 202
Quantum Nondemolition State Measurement via Atomic Scattering in Bragg Regime
We suggest a quantum nondemolition scheme to measure a quantized cavity field
state using scattering of atoms in general Bragg regime. Our work extends the
QND measurement of a cavity field from Fock state, based on first order Bragg
deflection [9], to any quantum state based on Bragg deflection of arbitrary
order. In addition a set of experimental parameters is provided to perform the
experiment within the frame work of the presently available technology.Comment: 11 pages text, 4 eps figures, to appear in letter section of journal
