A stochastic marked point process model for earthquakes
International audienceA simplified stochastic model for earthquake occurrence focusing on the spatio-temporal interactions between earthquakes is presented. The model is a marked point process model in which each earthquake is represented by its magnitude and coordinates in space and time. The model incorporates the occurrence of aftershocks as well as the build-up and subsequent release of strain. The parameters of the model are estimated from a maximum likelihood calculation
Multi-object spectroscopy of low redshift EIS clusters. I
We report the results of the first multi-object spectroscopic observations at
the Danish 1.54m telescope at La Silla, Chile. Observations of five cluster
candidates from the ESO Imaging Survey Cluster Candidate Catalog are described.
From these observations we confirm the reality of the five clusters with
measured redshifts of 0.11<=z<=0.35. We estimate velocity dispersions in the
range 294-621km/s indicating rather poor clusters. This, and the measured
cluster redshifts are consistent with the results of the matched filter
procedure applied to produce the Cluster Candidate Catalog.Comment: 7pages, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
On the equivalence of Eulerian and Lagrangian variables for the two-component Camassa-Holm system
The Camassa-Holm equation and its two-component Camassa-Holm system
generalization both experience wave breaking in finite time. To analyze this,
and to obtain solutions past wave breaking, it is common to reformulate the
original equation given in Eulerian coordinates, into a system of ordinary
differential equations in Lagrangian coordinates. It is of considerable
interest to study the stability of solutions and how this is manifested in
Eulerian and Lagrangian variables. We identify criteria of convergence, such
that convergence in Eulerian coordinates is equivalent to convergence in
Lagrangian coordinates. In addition, we show how one can approximate global
conservative solutions of the scalar Camassa-Holm equation by smooth solutions
of the two-component Camassa-Holm system that do not experience wave breaking
Modeling Intake of Grazing Cows Fed Complementary Feeds
A model suitable for predicting intake for grazing or non-grazing dairy cows is presented. The model integrates the potentially intake limiting factors of physical fill, physiological energy demand, wet mass, herbage availability, herbage cover, and grazing time. Integration of these factors with a simple set of linear ration balancing constraints yields a model suitable for predicting supplemental feed requirements as well as potential animal production from a grazed land. The model is semi-theoretical, being descriptive in structure, but containing empirical relationships

Finite difference schemes for the symmetric Keyfitz-Kranzer system
We are concerned with the convergence of numerical schemes for the initial
value problem associated to the Keyfitz-Kranzer system of equations. This
system is a toy model for several important models such as in elasticity
theory, magnetohydrodynamics, and enhanced oil recovery. In this paper we prove
the convergence of three difference schemes. Two of these schemes is shown to
converge to the unique entropy solution. Finally, the convergence is
illustrated by several examples.Comment: 31 page
Solving One Dimensional Scalar Conservation Laws by Particle Management
We present a meshfree numerical solver for scalar conservation laws in one
space dimension. Points representing the solution are moved according to their
characteristic velocities. Particle interaction is resolved by purely local
particle management. Since no global remeshing is required, shocks stay sharp
and propagate at the correct speed, while rarefaction waves are created where
appropriate. The method is TVD, entropy decreasing, exactly conservative, and
has no numerical dissipation. Difficulties involving transonic points do not
occur, however inflection points of the flux function pose a slight challenge,
which can be overcome by a special treatment. Away from shocks the method is
second order accurate, while shocks are resolved with first order accuracy. A
postprocessing step can recover the second order accuracy. The method is
compared to CLAWPACK in test cases and is found to yield an increase in

SPICES II. Optical and Near-Infrared Identifications of Faint X-Ray Sources from Deep Chandra Observations of Lynx
We present our first results on field X-ray sources detected in a deep, 184.7
ks observation with the ACIS-I camera on Chandra. The observations target the
Lynx field of SPICES, and contains three known X-ray-emitting clusters out to
z=1.27. Not including the known clusters, in the 17'x17' ACIS-I field we detect
132 sources in the 0.5-2 keV (soft) X-ray band down to a limiting flux of
\~1.7e-16 erg/cm2/s and 111 sources in the 2-10 keV (hard) X-ray band down to a
limiting flux of ~1.3e-15 erg/cm2/s. The combined catalog contains a total of
153 sources, of which 42 are detected only in the soft band and 21 are detected
only in the hard band. Confirming previous Chandra results, we find that the
fainter sources have harder X-ray spectra, providing a consistent solution to
the long-standing `spectral paradox'. From deep optical and near-infrared
follow-up data, 77% of the X-ray sources have optical counterparts to I=24 and
71% of the X-ray sources have near-infrared counterparts to K=20. Four of the
24 sources in the near-IR field are associated with extremely red objects
(EROs; I-K>4). We have obtained spectroscopic redshifts with the Keck
telescopes of 18 of the Lynx Chandra sources. These sources comprise a mix of
broad-lined active galaxies, apparently normal galaxies, and two late-type
Galactic dwarfs. Intriguingly, one Galactic source is identified with an M7
dwarf exhibiting non-transient, hard X-ray emission. We review non-AGN
mechanisms to produce X-ray emission and discuss properties of the Lynx Chandra
sample in relation to other samples of X-ray and non-X-ray sources.Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures. Accepted for publication in the May 2002
