CVD diamond coated silicon nitride self-mated systems : tribological behaviour under high loads
Friction and wear behaviour of self-mated chemical vapour deposited (CVD) diamond films coating silicon nitride ceramics (Si3N4) were investigated in ambient atmosphere. The tribological tests were conducted in a reciprocal motion ball-on-flat type tribometer under applied normal loads up to 80 N (~10 GPa). Several characterisation techniques - including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and micro-Raman studies - were used in order to assess the quality, stress state and wear resistance of the coatings. In addition, a novel method is presented to estimate the wear coefficient of the diamond coated flat specimens from AFM and optical microscopy (OM) observations of the wear tracks
Wettability and corrosion of [NTf2] anion-based ionic liquids on steel and PVD (TiN, CrN, ZrN) coatings
Thewetting and corrosion behavior of three bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide-based ionic liquids: 1-Dodecyl-3- methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C12MIM][NTf2], tributylmethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [N4441][NTf2] and methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [N1888][NTf2] are tested in this research. The surface tension was measured for temperatures of 293–353 K resulting in the expected linearly decreasing behavior with temperature increase. In addition, contact angle measurements were made on AISI 52100 steel and three coatings (TiN, CrN and ZrN) obtained by PVD technique, finding the regular behavior in hydrophobic (non-polar) systems: high contact angles led to high surface tensions. Complementary parameters like spreading parameter and polarity fraction were calculated to enhance the wetting evaluation of these ionic liquids. [N1888][NTf2]/TiN resulted as the best IL-surface combination for a good wettability, due to the higher dispersion of the charge on the large size cation in this IL and the higher values of total and polar component of the surface free energy for this coating. Finally, SEM-EDS analysis determined that [N1888][NTf2]/ZrN was the best option in order to avoid corrosion problems. The evaporation of water, present as impurity in the ionic liquids, was found the main reason because of corrosion did not occur in the tests carried out at 100 °C
Superhard CrN/MoN films with multilayer architecture
Main regularities of the formation of microstructure and properties ofmultilayer nanostructured CrN/MoN films
with periodically changing architecture of layers were considered. Coatings were fabricated by vacuum-arc evaporation of the cathodes (Arc-PVD) in nitrogen atmosphere (pN was 0.4, 0.09 and 0.03 Pa). CrN and γ-Mo2N nitride phases with fcc lattices and a small volume of metastable MoNx cubic phase were formed in the films at pN = 0.4 Pa. The decrease of pN to 0.09 Pa causes the formation of β-Cr2N hexagonal phase. Preferential crystallographic orientation changes from [311] to [111] and [200] when bias voltage Ub is −20, −150 and −300 V respectively. The nanocrystallites size in coatings with bilayer thickness λ = 44 nm decreases to 5.8 nm. The microdeformation grows from 0.4 to 2.3% when Ub changes to −20 V. Coatings show high hardness of 38–42 GPa and H/E = 0.107. In a couple with results of tribological tests, coatings demonstrate strong wear resistance, which makes them appropriate and promising for industrial applications as protective ones. The effect of deposition conditions (pN, Ub, λ) on composition, structure, hardness, toughness and wear resistance was studied to achieve superior mechanical and physical properties of coatings with long lifetime in harsh environment.State budget programs of Ukraine, grant numbers 0116U002621, 0115U000682, 0116U006816; SFRH/BD/ 129614/2017; NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-022096info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
