Weak Poisson structures on infinite dimensional manifolds and hamiltonian actions
We introduce a notion of a weak Poisson structure on a manifold modeled
on a locally convex space. This is done by specifying a Poisson bracket on a
subalgebra \cA \subeq C^\infty(M) which has to satisfy a non-degeneracy
condition (the differentials of elements of \cA separate tangent vectors) and
we postulate the existence of smooth Hamiltonian vector fields. Motivated by
applications to Hamiltonian actions, we focus on affine Poisson spaces which
include in particular the linear and affine Poisson structures on duals of
locally convex Lie algebras. As an interesting byproduct of our approach, we
can associate to an invariant symmetric bilinear form on a Lie algebra
\g and a -skew-symmetric derivation a weak affine Poisson
structure on \g itself. This leads naturally to a concept of a Hamiltonian
-action on a weak Poisson manifold with a \g-valued momentum map and hence
to a generalization of quasi-hamiltonian group actions
Pseudoconvex domains spread over complex homogeneous manifolds
Using the concept of inner integral curves defined by Hirschowitz we
generalize a recent result by Kim, Levenberg and Yamaguchi concerning the
obstruction of a pseudoconvex domain spread over a complex homogeneous manifold
to be Stein. This is then applied to study the holomorphic reduction of
pseudoconvex complex homogeneous manifolds X=G/H. Under the assumption that G
is solvable or reductive we prove that X is the total space of a G-equivariant
holomorphic fiber bundle over a Stein manifold such that all holomorphic
functions on the fiber are constant.Comment: 21 page
Antineutrinos from Earth: A reference model and its uncertainties
We predict geoneutrino fluxes in a reference model based on a detailed
description of Earth's crust and mantle and using the best available
information on the abundances of uranium, thorium, and potassium inside Earth's
layers. We estimate the uncertainties of fluxes corresponding to the
uncertainties of the element abundances. In addition to distance integrated
fluxes, we also provide the differential fluxes as a function of distance from
several sites of experimental interest. Event yields at several locations are
estimated and their dependence on the neutrino oscillation parameters is
discussed. At Kamioka we predict N(U+Th)=35 +- 6 events for 10^{32} proton yr
and 100% efficiency assuming sin^2(2theta)=0.863 and delta m^2 = 7.3 X 10^{-5}
eV^2. The maximal prediction is 55 events, obtained in a model with fully
radiogenic production of the terrestrial heat flow.Comment: 24 pages, ReVTeX4, plus 7 postscript figures; minor formal changes to

Generators and commutators in finite groups; abstract quotients of compact groups
Let N be a normal subgroup of a finite group G. We prove that under certain
(unavoidable) conditions the subgroup [N,G] is a product of commutators [N,y]
(with prescribed values of y from a given set Y) of length bounded by a
function of d(G) and |Y| only. This has several applications: 1. A new proof
that G^n is closed (and hence open) in any finitely generated profinite group
G. 2. A finitely generated abstract quotient of a compact Hausdorff group must
be finite. 3. Let G be a topologically finitely generated compact Hausdorff
group. Then G has a countably infinite abstract quotient if and only if G has
an infinite virtually abelian continuous quotient.Comment: This paper supersedes the preprint arXiv:0901.0244v2 by the first

Mid-infrared sizes of circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars measured with MIDI on the VLTI
We present the first long baseline mid-infrared interferometric observations of the circumstellar disks surrounding Herbig Ae/Be stars. The observations were obtained using the mid-infrared interferometric instrument MIDI at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope Interferometer VLTI on Cerro Paranal. The 102 m baseline given by the telescopes UT1 and UT3 was employed, which provides a maximum full spatial resolution of 20 milli-arcsec (mas) at a wavelength of 10 μm. The interferometric signal was spectrally dispersed at a resolution of 30, giving spectrally resolved visibility information from 8 μm to 13.5 μm. We observed seven nearby Herbig Ae/Be stars and resolved all objects. The warm dust disk of HD 100546 could even be resolved in single-telescope imaging. Characteristic dimensions of the emitting regions at 10 μm are found to be from 1 AU to 10 AU. The 10 μm sizes of our sample stars correlate with the slope of the 10–25 μm infrared spectrum in the sense that the reddest objects are the largest ones. Such a correlation would be consistent with a different geometry in terms of flaring or flat (self-shadowed) disks for sources with strong or moderate mid-infrared excess, respectively. We compare the observed spectrally resolved visibilities with predictions based on existing models of passive centrally irradiated hydrostatic disks made to fit the SEDs of the observed stars. We find broad qualitative agreement of the spectral shape of visibilities corresponding to these models with our observations. Quantitatively, there are discrepancies that show the need for a next step in modelling of circumstellar disks, satisfying both the spatial constraints such as are now available from the MIDI observations and the flux constraints from the SEDs in a consistent way
AMBER : a near infrared focal instrument for the VLTI
10 pagesInternational audienceAMBER is the General User near-infrared focal instrument of the Very Large Telescope interferometer. Its specifications are based on three key programs on Young Stellar Objects, Active Galactic Nuclei central regions, masses and spectra of hot Extra Solar Planets. It has an imaging capacity because it combines up to three beams and very high accuracy measurement are expected from the spatial filtering of beams by single mode fibers and the comparison of measurements made simultaneously in different spectral channels
MATISSE, perspective of imaging in the mid-infrared at the VLTI
International audienceMATISSE is foreseen as a mid-infrared spectro-interferometer combining the beams of up to four UTs/ATs of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory. The related science case study demonstrates the enormous capability of a new generation mid-infrared beam combiner. MATISSE will constitute an evolution of the two-beam interferometric instrument MIDI. MIDI is a very successful instrument which offers a perfect combination of spectral and angular resolution. New characteristics present in MATISSE will give access to the mapping and the distribution of the material (typically dust) in the circumstellar environments by using a wide mid-infrared band coverage extended to L, M and N spectral bands. The four beam combination of MATISSE provides an efficient UV-coverage : 6 visibility points are measured in one set and 4 closure phase relations which can provide aperture synthesis images in the mid-infrared spectral regime
