    Smith Lever 3(d) Extension Evaluation and Outcome Reporting--A Scorecard to Assist Federal Program Leaders

    The Government Performance Results Act requires that federal agencies and programs set goals and measure outcomes (USGAO, 1996); however, program managers find it difficult to make the transition from measuring program outputs to developing outcome-related measures (USGAO, 1997). The Hoffman EEOR Scorecard was developed to help federal Smith Lever 3(d) program leaders with this problem by blending the LOGIC Evaluation Model with the utilization of Extension evaluation and outcome reporting (EEOR) ideal practices. The utility of this question-based scorecard for all Smith Lever 3(d) programs is exemplified through its use with the CSREES Extension Integrated Pest Management Implementation Program

    Sustainable Software Ecosystems for Open Science

    Sustainable software ecosystems are difficult to build, and require concerted effort, community norms and collaborations. In science it is especially important to establish communities in which faculty, staff, students and open-source professionals work together and treat software as a first-class product of scientific investigation-just as mathematics is treated in the physical sciences. Kitware has a rich history of establishing collaborative projects in the science, engineering and medical research fields, and continues to work on improving that model as new technologies and approaches become available. This approach closely follows and is enhanced by the movement towards practicing open, reproducible research in the sciences where data, source code, methodology and approach are all available so that complex experiments can be independently reproduced and verified.Comment: Workshop on Sustainable Software: Practices and Experiences, 4 pages, 3 figure

    Transitioning ECP Software Technology into a Foundation for Sustainable Research Software

    Research software plays a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge, but ensuring its sustainability, maintainability, and long-term viability is an ongoing challenge. The Sustainable Research Software Institute (SRSI) Model has been designed to address the concerns, and presents a comprehensive framework designed to promote sustainable practices in the research software community. However the SRSI Model does not address the transitional requirements for the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) Software Technology (ECP-ST) focus area specifically.     Ivacaftor potentiation of multiple CFTR channels with gating mutations

    AbstractBackgroundThe investigational CFTR potentiator ivacaftor (VX-770) increased CFTR channel activity and improved lung function in subjects with CF who have the G551D CFTR gating mutation. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine whether ivacaftor potentiates mutant CFTR with gating defects caused by other CFTR gating mutations.MethodsThe effects of ivacaftor on CFTR channel open probability and chloride transport were tested in electrophysiological studies using Fischer rat thyroid (FRT) cells expressing different CFTR gating mutations.ResultsIvacaftor potentiated multiple mutant CFTR forms with defects in CFTR channel gating. These included the G551D, G178R, S549N, S549R, G551S, G970R, G1244E, S1251N, S1255P and G1349D CFTR gating mutations.ConclusionThese in vitro data suggest that ivacaftor has a similar effect on all CFTR forms with gating defects and support investigation of the potential clinical benefit of ivacaftor in CF patients who have CFTR gating mutations beyond G551D
