    Predicting the mass spectrum of polymerizing linoleates using weighted random graph modeling

    Biopolymers and biopolymer networks that form via autoxidation, like in drying of oil paint or fat degradation in food components, contain a large variety of monomeric building blocks. While the monomer variety complicates the modeling itself, obtaining experimental validation of infinite polymer networks is inherently difficult as well. A new model is developed, where an automated reaction network generation (ARNG) procedure is used to automatically generate the monomer components, structures and masses, and their reactions. This methodology is combined with random graph (RG) modeling to predict global polymer properties: distributions of numbers of monomer units and molar masses, gel point and gel fraction. This computational framework is applied to two model systems for linseed oil paint binder: the polymerization of ethyl linoleate (EL) and methyl linoleate (ML). A novel method was constructed to deal with the variability of monomer masses that complicates inferring molar mass from monomer number distribution. By modeling the polymer as a weighted random graph where the nodes contain information about the monomer masses in the system, the total weight of the finite connected components is computed. The predicted mass spectrum of finite connected components is used for validation with experimental data. A size exclusion chromatography (SEC) trace of ML is employed, which after calibration using the proposed framework, proves consistency between model and SEC data. The model provides a practical approach to both characterize complex biopolymers as polymers in terms of molar mass distribution and gel point, while preserving the information down to the level of monomeric units.</p

    Learning Latent Factor Models of Travel Data for Travel Prediction and Analysis

    Abstract. We describe latent factor probability models of human travel, which we learn from data. The latent factors represent interpretable properties: travel distance cost, desirability of destinations, and affinity between locations. Individuals are clustered into distinct styles of travel. The latent factors combine in a multiplicative manner, and are learned using Maximum Likelihood. We show that our models explain the data significantly better than histogrambased methods. We also visualize the model parameters to show information about travelers and travel patterns. We show that different individuals exhibit different propensity to travel large distances. We extract the desirability of destinations on the map, which is distinct from their popularity. We show that pairs of locations have different affinities with each other, and that these affinities are partly explained by travelers ’ preference for staying within national borders and within the borders of linguistic areas. The method is demonstrated on two sources of travel data: geotags from Flickr images, and GPS tracks from Shanghai taxis.

    Endoscopic ultrasound-guided ablation of solid pancreatic lesions: A systematic review of early outcomes with pooled analysis

    Contains fulltext : 252157.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (EUS-RFA) is emerging as a complementary therapeutic approach for pancreatic solid masses. However, results of published data are difficult to interpret because of a retrospective design and small sample size. AIM: To systematically review data on EUS-RFA for solid lesions and to pool the results of the different experiences in order to provide more consistent evidence in terms of safety and efficacy. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic literature search on the main databases was performed to identify articles in which patients with pancreatic solid lesions underwent EUS-RFA. The primary outcomes were procedure-related adverse events (AEs) and mortality. Secondary outcomes were the technical success rate and the effects on primary tumor growth. Statistical analyses were performed using Stata version 14.0. RESULTS: In total, 14 studies were included, with 120 patients undergoing 153 ablations of 129 solid pancreatic lesions. The STARmed technology was used in seven studies, the Habib system in six studies, and the HybridTherm probe in one study. The pooled technical success rate was 99.0% (I (2): 25.82%). The pooled overall AE rate was 8.0% (I (2): 11.46%). Excluding mild AEs, the pooled rates of serious AEs was 1.0% (I (2): 0%). No mortality related to the procedure was reported. CONCLUSION: The present pooled analysis confirms the safety and feasibility of EUS-RFA

    We describe the design, construction, readout, tests, and performance of planar drift chambers, based on 5 mm diameter copperized Mylar and Kapton straws, used in an experimental search for rare kaon decays. The experiment took place in the high-intensity neutral beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory, using a neutral beam stop, two analyzing dipoles, and redundant particle identification to remove backgrounds

    Multidimensional Conservation Laws: Overview, Problems, and Perspective

    Some of recent important developments are overviewed, several longstanding open problems are discussed, and a perspective is presented for the mathematical theory of multidimensional conservation laws. Some basic features and phenomena of multidimensional hyperbolic conservation laws are revealed, and some samples of multidimensional systems/models and related important problems are presented and analyzed with emphasis on the prototypes that have been solved or may be expected to be solved rigorously at least for some cases. In particular, multidimensional steady supersonic problems and transonic problems, shock reflection-diffraction problems, and related effective nonlinear approaches are analyzed. A theory of divergence-measure vector fields and related analytical frameworks for the analysis of entropy solutions are discussed.Comment: 43 pages, 3 figure
