Plant diversity to support humans in a CELSS ground based demonstrator
A controlled ecological life support system (CELSS) for human habitation in preparation for future long duration space flights is considered. The success of such a system depends upon the feasibility of revitalization of food resources and the human nutritional needs which are to be met by these food resources. Edible higher plants are prime candidates for the photoautotrophic components of this system if nutritionally adequate diets can be derived from these plant sources to support humans. Human nutritional requirements information based on current knowledge are developed for inhabitants envisioned in the CELSS ground based demonstrator. Groups of plant products that can provide the nutrients are identified
Effective action for a quantum scalar field in warped spaces
We investigate the one-loop corrections at zero, as well as finite
temperature, of a scalar field taking place in a braneworld motived warped
background. After to reach a well defined problem, we calculate the effective
action with the corresponding quantum corrections to each case.Comment: 10 pages, to appear in The European Physical Journal
Nutritional and cultural aspects of plant species selection for a controlled ecological life support system
The feasibility of using higher plants in a controlled ecological life support system is discussed. Aspects of this system considered important in the use of higher plants include: limited energy, space, and mass, and problems relating to cultivation and management of plants, food processing, the psychological impact of vegetarian diets, and plant propagation. A total of 115 higher plant species are compared based on 21 selection criteria
Transfer of Sulfur from IscS to IscU during Fe/S Cluster Assembly
The cysteine desulfurase enzymes NifS and IscS provide sulfur for the biosynthesis of Fe/S proteins. NifU and IscU have been proposed to serve as template or scaffold proteins in the initial Fe/S cluster assembly events, but the mechanism of sulfur transfer from NifS or IscS to NifU or IscU has not been elucidated. We have employed [35S]cysteine radiotracer studies to monitor sulfur transfer between IscS and IscU from Escherichia coli and have used direct binding measurements to investigate interactions between the proteins. IscS catalyzed transfer of 35S from [35S]cysteine to IscU in the absence of additional thiol reagents, suggesting that transfer can occur directly and without involvement of an intermediate carrier. Surface plasmon resonance studies and isothermal titration calorimetry measurements further revealed that IscU binds to IscS with high affinity (Kd ~2 µM) in support of a direct transfer mechanism. Transfer was inhibited by treatment of IscU with iodoacetamide, and 35S was released by reducing reagents, suggesting that transfer of persulfide sulfur occurs to cysteinyl groups of IscU. A deletion mutant of IscS lacking C-terminal residues 376-413 (IscSDelta 376-413) displayed cysteine desulfurase activity similar to the full-length protein but exhibited lower binding affinity for IscU, decreased ability to transfer 35S to IscU, and reduced activity in assays of Fe/S cluster assembly on IscU. The findings with IscSDelta 376-413 provide additional support for a mechanism of sulfur transfer involving a direct interaction between IscS and IscU and suggest that the C-terminal region of IscS may be important for binding IscU
On the bilinear covariants associated to mass dimension one spinors
In this paper we approach the issue of Clifford algebra basis deformation,
allowing for bilinear covariants associated to Elko spinors which satisfy the
Fierz-Pauli-Kofink identities. We present a complete analysis of covariance,
taking into account the involved dual structure associated to Elko. Moreover,
the possible generalizations to the recently presented new dual structure are
performed.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figure
Brane Cosmic String Compactification in Brans-Dicke Theory
We investigate an alternative compactification of extra dimensions using
local cosmic string in the Brans-Dicke gravity framework. In the context of
dynamical systems it is possible to show that there exist a stable field
configuration for the Einstein-Brans-Dicke equations. We explore the analogies
between this particular model and the Randall-Sundrum scenario.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, no figures. To appear in the Physical Review
Towards an hybrid compactification with a scalar-tensor global cosmic string
We derive a solution of the gravitational equations which leads to a
braneworld scenario in six dimensions using a global cosmic string solution in
a low energy effective string theory framework. The final spacetime is composed
by one warped brane with topology and a power
law warp factor, and one noncompact extra dimension transverse to the brane. By
looking at the current experimental bounds, we find a range of parameters in
which, if the on-brane dimension has an acceptable size, it does not solve the
hierarchy problem. In another example this problem is smoothed by the
Brans-Dicke parameter.Comment: RevTex, 7 pages. New version to be published in the JCAP (2008
Quantifying Factors Affecting Sidewall Air Inlet Performance
A generalized sidewall air inlet (SWAI) was designed based on past research (Wu et al., 1994; Hoff et al., 1994). Research was conducted on this SWAI design to evaluate volumetric flow rate as a function of inlet height, opening height, hood design, deflecting vane-design, and static pressure difference across the inlet. Dimensional analysis was used as a tool to decide the importance of each inlet parameter. Extreme values of Pi terms were calculated, tested, and compared with each other to analyze the significance of inlet parameters affecting the discharge coefficient and volumetric flow rate. Results showed that the discharge coefficient ranged from 0.58 to 0.90 and was affected by the opening aspect ratio, weather hood approach angle, and deflecting vane angle. Design graphs are presented for evaluating the discharge coefficient for this generalized inlet
