Motor skill learning-induced functional plasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex: A comparison between young and older adults
While in young adults (YAs) the underlying neural mechanisms of motor learning are well-studied, studies on the involvement of the somatosensory system during motor skill learning in older adults (OAs) remain sparse. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate motor learning-induced neuroplasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) in YAs and OAs. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were used to quantify somatosensory activation prior and immediately after motor skill learning in 20 right-handed healthy YAs (age range: 19–35 years) and OAs (age range: 57–76 years). Participants underwent a single session of a 30-min co-contraction task of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and deltoid muscle. To assess the effect of motor learning, muscle onset asynchrony (MOA) between the onsets of the contractions of both muscles was measured using electromyography monitoring. In both groups, MOA shortened significantly during motor learning, with YAs showing bigger reductions. No changes were found in SEP amplitudes after motor learning in both groups. However, a correlation analysis revealed an association between baseline SEP amplitudes of the N20/P25 and N30 SEP component and the motor learning slope in YAs such that higher amplitudes are related to higher learning. Hence, the present findings suggest that SEP amplitudes might serve as a predictor of individual motor learning success, at least in YAs. Additionally, our results suggest that OAs are still capable of learning complex motor tasks, showing the importance of motor training in higher age to remain an active part of our society as a prevention for care dependency

Gas and Dust Emission at the Outer Edge of Protoplanetary Disks
We investigate the apparent discrepancy between gas and dust outer radii
derived from millimeter observations of protoplanetary disks. Using 230 and 345
GHz continuum and CO J=3-2 data from the Submillimeter Array for four nearby
disk systems (HD 163296, TW Hydrae, GM Aurigae, and MWC 480), we examine models
of circumstellar disk structure and the effects of their treatment of the outer
disk edge. We show that for these disks, models described by power laws in
surface density and temperature that are truncated at an outer radius are
incapable of reproducing both the gas and dust emission simultaneously: the
outer radius derived from the dust continuum emission is always significantly
smaller than the extent of the molecular gas disk traced by CO emission.
However, a simple model motivated by similarity solutions of the time evolution
of accretion disks that includes a tapered exponential edge in the surface
density distribution (and the same number of free parameters) does much better
at reproducing both the gas and dust emission. While this analysis does not
rule out the disparate radii implied by the truncated power-law models, a
realistic alternative disk model, grounded in the physics of accretion,

System-Agnostic Clinical Decision Support Services: Benefits and Challenges for Scalable Decision Support
System-agnostic clinical decision support (CDS) services provide patient evaluation capabilities that are independent of specific CDS systems and system implementation contexts. While such system-agnostic CDS services hold great potential for facilitating the widespread implementation of CDS systems, little has been described regarding the benefits and challenges of their use. In this manuscript, the authors address this need by describing potential benefits and challenges of using a system-agnostic CDS service. This analysis is based on the authors’ formal assessments of, and practical experiences with, various approaches to developing, implementing, and maintaining CDS capabilities. In particular, the analysis draws on the authors’ experience developing and leveraging a system-agnostic CDS Web service known as SEBASTIAN. A primary potential benefit of using a system-agnostic CDS service is the relative ease and flexibility with which the service can be leveraged to implement CDS capabilities across applications and care settings. Other important potential benefits include facilitation of centralized knowledge management and knowledge sharing; the potential to support multiple underlying knowledge representations and knowledge resources through a common service interface; improved simplicity and componentization; easier testing and validation; and the enabling of distributed CDS system development. Conversely, important potential challenges include the increased effort required to develop knowledge resources capable of being used in many contexts and the critical need to standardize the service interface. Despite these challenges, our experiences to date indicate that the benefits of using a system-agnostic CDS service generally outweigh the challenges of using this approach to implementing and maintaining CDS systems
Clinical and diagnostic features of Bartter and Gitelman syndromes
Background: Bartter and Gitelman syndromes are autosomal recessive disorders of renal tubular salt handling. Due to their rarity, limited long-term data are available to inform prognosis and management. / Methods: Long-term longitudinal data were analysed for 45 children with pathogenic variants in SLC12A1 (n = 8), KCNJ1 (n = 8), CLCNKB (n = 17), BSND (n = 2) and SLC12A3 (n = 10) seen at a single centre between 1984 and 2014. Median follow-up was 8.9 [interquartile range (IQR) 0.7–18.1] years. / Results: Polyhydramnios and prematurity were seen in children with SLC12A1 and KCNJ1 mutations. Patients with CLCNKB mutations had the lowest serum potassium and serum magnesium and the highest serum bicarbonate levels. Fractional excretion of chloride was >0.5% in all patients prior to supplementation. Nephrocalcinosis at presentation was present in the majority of patients with SLC12A1 and KCNJ1 mutations, while it was only present in one patient with CLCNKB and not in SLC12A3 or BSND mutations. Growth was impaired, but within the normal range (median height standard deviation score −1.2 at the last follow-up). Impaired estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR <90 mL/min/1.73 m2) at the last follow-up was seen predominantly with SLC12A1 [71 mL/min/1.73 m2 (IQR 46–74)] and KCNJ1 [62 mL/min/1.73 m2 (IQR 48–72)] mutations. Pathological albuminuria was detected in 31/45 children. / Conclusions: Patients with Bartter and Gitelman syndromes had a satisfactory prognosis during childhood. However, decreased eGFR and pathologic proteinuria was evident in a large number of these patients, highlighting the need to monitor glomerular as well as tubular function. Electrolyte abnormalities were most severe in CLCNKB mutations both at presentation and during follow-up. A New Association of Post-T Tauri Stars Near The Sun
Observing ROSAT sources in 20 x 25 deg centered at the high latitude active
star ER Eri, we found evidences for a new young nearby association (~30Myr
at~60pc), the Horologium Association (HorA), formed by at least 10 probable and
6 possible members, some being Post-T Tauri stars. We examine several
requirements that characterize a young association and they, together, create a
strong evidence for the reality of the HorA. In fact, the Li line intensities
are between those of the oldest classical T Tauri stars and the ones of the
Local Association stars. The space velocities of the HorA relative to the Sun,
U= -9.5+/-1.0, V = -20.9 +/- 1.1, W = -2.1 +/- 1.9, are not far from those of
the Local Association. We suggest that some hotter and non-X-ray active stars,
with similar space velocities, could be massive members of the HorA, among
them, the nearby Be star Achernar. The maximum of the mass distribution
function of the HorA is around 0.8 solar masses. At its distance, the projected
size of the HorA, ~50 pc, would be larger than our surveyed area and many other
members could have been missed. We also observed 3 control regions, two at
northern and southern galactic latitudes and a third one in the known TW Hya
Association (TWA), and the properties and distribution of their young stars
strengthen the reality of the HorA. Contrary to the TWA, the only known
binaries in the HorA are 2 very wide systems. The HorA is much more isolated
from clouds and older than the TWA and could give some clues about the lifetime
of the disks around T Tauri stars. Actually, none of the proposed members is an
IRAS source indicating an advanced stage of the evolution of their accreting
disks. ER Eri itself was found to be a RS CVn-like system.Comment: 25 pages, 5 eps figures, to appear in Astron.

Beaten into Submissiveness? An Investigation into the Protective Strategies used by Survivors of Domestic Abuse

Forty participants were recruited from a voluntary sector domestic abuse service, commissioned by an outer London local authority in the UK. The measurement tools used were the Intimate Partner Violence Strategies Index and the CAADA Domestic Abuse, Stalking and ‘Honour’-Based Violence (DASH) Risk Assessment Checklist. The average age was 33 (SD=7.9, range: 20-57), half reported to be of Asian ethnicity, 37.5% White and 12.5% Black or Mixed ethnicity. The average DASH score was 9.8 (SD=13.2, range: 0-18) and an average of 18 (SD=6.7, range: 1-29) protective strategies were utilised by each participant. All of the most commonly used strategies were from the Placating category. Though Safety Planning strategies were rated as the most helpful by all participants, Placating strategies were also rated as helpful by two-thirds of participants. Stepwise multiple regression showed that Placating was the only significant predictor of DASH score (β=0.375, p<0.05) and accounted for 14% of the variance of DASH score. Findings showed that women utilized a diverse range of protective strategies with placating strategies being most intensely used and rated as helpful. However, placating strategy usage could be a risk factor as opposed to a protective factor. This study has also demonstrated that greater placating strategies were used by White than South Asian women, and women who were employed used more formal strategies. This research has extended the knowledge base of protective strategies that professionals can draw from to underpin decisions and interventions when working with domestic abuse survivors.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
