Career changers in teaching jobs: A case study based on the Swiss vocational education system
This study investigates the determinants and motives of professionals who change career to vocational teaching. The framework for this study is the Swiss vocational education system, which requires that teachers of vocational subjects must have a prior career in that specific field. Thus, to work in teaching, every vocational teacher has to change his or her initial career. This paper focuses on the relevance of monetary motives for changing a career to teaching. Using a unique data set of trainee teachers, we show that professionals who change their careers to teaching earned on average more in their first career than comparable workers in the same occupation. Our findings additionally demonstrate that the average career changer still expects to earn significantly more as a teacher than in the former career. However, the study shows substantial heterogeneity and a zero wage elasticity of the teacher supply, suggesting that non-monetary motives are more relevant for career change than monetary factors
Salmonella typhimurium strains carrying hemolysin plasmids and cloned hemolysin. genes from Escherichia coli
Like all other Salmonella typhimurium strains examined, the smooth variants SF1397 (L T2) and 1366 and also their semi-rough and rough derivatives are non-haemolytic. Nevertheless, two haemolysin (Hly) plasmids of E. coli belonging to the inc groups incFllI,lv (pSU316) and incIz (pHly152) were able to be introduced into these strains by conjugation and stably maintained. A considerable percentage of the Hly+ transconjugants obtained had lost parts of their O-side chains, a result of selection for the better recipient capability of « semi-rough» variants rather than the direct influence of the Hly+ plasmids themselves. In contrast to the incF1lI1V plasmid pSU316, which exhibited higher conjugation rates with rough recipients, the incIz plasmid pHly152 was accepted best by smooth strains. Transformation with cloned E. coli haemolysin (hly) determinant was inefficient ( <10-8) for smooth strains, but 102-103 times higher for rough recipients, and was increased by the use of Salmonella-modified DNA. The transform ants and transconjugants were relatively stable and showed the same haemolytic activity as the E. coli donor strains. The virulence of the Hly+ smooth, semi-rough and rough S. typhimurium strains was tested in two mouse models, and neither the mortality rate nor the ability to multiply within the mouse spleen was influenced by the hly determinants
Adaptive colour change and background choice behaviour in peppered moth caterpillars is mediated by extraocular photoreception
Light sensing by tissues distinct from the eye occurs in diverse animal groups, enabling circadian control and phototactic behaviour. Extraocular photoreceptors may also facilitate rapid colour change in cephalopods and lizards, but little is known about the sensory system that mediates slow colour change in arthropods. We previously reported that slow colour change in twig-mimicking caterpillars of the peppered moth (Biston betularia) is a response to achromatic and chromatic visual cues. Here we show that the perception of these cues, and the resulting phenotypic responses, does not require ocular vision. Caterpillars with completely obscured ocelli remained capable of enhancing their crypsis by changing colour and choosing to rest on colour-matching twigs. A suite of visual genes, expressed across the larval integument, likely plays a key role in the mechanism. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence that extraocular colour sensing can mediate pigment-based colour change and behaviour in an arthropod
Dynamic photoconductive gain effect in shallow-etched AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wires
We report on a dynamic photoconductive gain effect in quantum wires which are
lithographically fabricated in an AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well via a shallow-etch
technique. The effect allows resolving the one-dimensional subbands of the
quantum wires as maxima in the photoresponse across the quantum wires. We
interpret the results by optically induced holes in the valence band of the
quantum well which shift the chemical potential of the quantum wire. The
non-linear current-voltage characteristics of the quantum wires also allow
detecting the photoresponse effect of excess charge carriers in the conduction
band of the quantum well. The dynamics of the photoconductive gain are limited
by the recombination time of both electrons and holes

In stockless organic farms it is difficult to produce winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with high protein content. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of intercropping of (i) winter wheat with either winter field bean (Vicia faba L.) or winter pea (Pisum sativum L.), (ii) the spatial arrangement (mixed, row or row-strip intercrop) and (iii) the seeding rate of the wheat (100 or 20 %) on yield formation and grain protein content. Monocropped wheat planted at a seeding rate of 20 % significantly out-yielded monocropped wheat at 100 % seeding rate because of a more efficient use of the mineral nitrogen (N) in soil. A gradient in the spatial and temporal use of mineral soil N by the wheat was found. N was available in particular from deeper soil layers during the grain filling phase in row strip intercrop trials, resulting in a higher grain protein content of the wheat. Monocropped wheat achieved mean protein content levels of 9,9 and 9,4 % at two different sites and protein content increased significantly in mixture (mean: 12,8 and 11,4 %). Connecting Terminals and 2-Disjoint Connected Subgraphs
Given a graph and a set of terminal vertices we say that a
superset of is -connecting if induces a connected graph, and
is minimal if no strict subset of is -connecting. In this paper we prove
that there are at most minimal -connecting sets when and that
these can be enumerated within a polynomial factor of this bound. This
generalizes the algorithm for enumerating all induced paths between a pair of
vertices, corresponding to the case . We apply our enumeration algorithm
to solve the {\sc 2-Disjoint Connected Subgraphs} problem in time

Multinet : enabler for next generation enterprise wireless services
Wireless communications are currently experiencing a fast migration toward the beyond third-generation (B3G)/fourth generation (4G) era. This represents a generational change in wireless systems: new capabilities related to mobility and new services support is required and new concepts as individual-centric, user-centric or ambient-aware communications are included. One of the main restrictions associated to wireless technology is mobility management, this feature was not considered in the design phase; for this reason, a complete solution is not already found, although different solutions are proposed and are being proposed. In MULTINET project, features as mobility and multihoming are applied to wireless network to provide the necessary network and application functionality enhancements for seamless data communication mobility considering end-user scenario and preferences. The aim of this paper is to show the benefits of these functionalities from the Service Providers and final User point of view
Diffractive point sets with entropy
After a brief historical survey, the paper introduces the notion of entropic
model sets (cut and project sets), and, more generally, the notion of
diffractive point sets with entropy. Such sets may be thought of as
generalizations of lattice gases. We show that taking the site occupation of a
model set stochastically results, with probabilistic certainty, in well-defined
diffractive properties augmented by a constant diffuse background. We discuss
both the case of independent, but identically distributed (i.i.d.) random
variables and that of independent, but different (i.e., site dependent) random

Extinctions and Correlations for Uniformly Discrete Point Processes with Pure Point Dynamical Spectra
The paper investigates how correlations can completely specify a uniformly
discrete point process. The setting is that of uniformly discrete point sets in
real space for which the corresponding dynamical hull is ergodic. The first
result is that all of the essential physical information in such a system is
derivable from its -point correlations, . If the system is
pure point diffractive an upper bound on the number of correlations required
can be derived from the cycle structure of a graph formed from the dynamical
and Bragg spectra. In particular, if the diffraction has no extinctions, then
the 2 and 3 point correlations contain all the relevant information.Comment: 16 page
Use of Xpert MTB/RIF in Decentralized Public Health Settings and Its Effect on Pulmonary TB and DR-TB Case Finding in India
Background Xpert MTB/RIF, the first automated molecular test for tuberculosis, is transforming the diagnostic landscape in high-burden settings. This study assessed the impact of up-front Xpert MTB/RIF testing on detection of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and rifampicin-resistant PTB (DR-TB) cases in India. Methods This demonstration study was implemented in 18 sub-district level TB programme units (TUs) in India in diverse geographic and demographic settings covering a population of 8.8 million. A baseline phase in 14 TUs captured programmatic baseline data, and an intervention phase in 18 TUs had Xpert MTB/RIF offered to all presumptive TB patients. We estimated changes in detection of TB and DR-TB, the former using binomial regression models to adjust for clustering and covariates. Results In the 14 study TUs, which participated in both phases, 10,675 and 70,556 presumptive TB patients were enrolled in the baseline and intervention phase, respectively, and 1,532 (14.4%) and 14,299 (20.3%) bacteriologically confirmed PTB cases were detected. The implementation of Xpert MTB/RIF was associated with increases in both notification rates of bacteriologically confirmed TB cases (adjusted incidence rate ratio [aIRR] 1.39; CI 1.18-1.64), and proportion of bacteriological confirmed TB cases among presumptive TB cases (adjusted risk ratio (aRR) 1.33; CI 1.6-1.52). Compared with the baseline strategy of selective drug-susceptibility testing only for PTB cases at high risk of drug-resistant TB, Xpert MTB/RIF implementation increased rifampicin resistant TB case detection by over fivefold. Among, 2765 rifampicin resistance cases detected, 1055 were retested with conventional drug susceptibility testing (DST). Positive predictive value (PPV) of rifampicin resistance detected by Xpert MTB/RIF was 94.7% (CI 91.3-98.1), in comparison to conventional DST. Conclusion Introduction of Xpert MTB/RIF as initial diagnostic test for TB in public health facilities significantly increased case-notification rates of all bacteriologically confirmed TB by 39% and rifampicin-resistant TB case notification by fivefold
