Complexity and Expressivity of Branching- and Alternating-Time Temporal Logics with Finitely Many Variables
We show that Branching-time temporal logics CTL and CTL*, as well as
Alternating-time temporal logics ATL and ATL*, are as semantically expressive
in the language with a single propositional variable as they are in the full
language, i.e., with an unlimited supply of propositional variables. It follows
that satisfiability for CTL, as well as for ATL, with a single variable is
EXPTIME-complete, while satisfiability for CTL*, as well as for ATL*, with a
single variable is 2EXPTIME-complete,--i.e., for these logics, the
satisfiability for formulas with only one variable is as hard as satisfiability
for arbitrary formulas.Comment: Prefinal version of the published pape
Local Chirality of Low-Lying Dirac Eigenmodes and the Instanton Liquid Model
The reasons for using low-lying Dirac eigenmodes to probe the local structure
of topological charge fluctuations in QCD are discussed, and it is pointed out
that the qualitative double-peaked behavior of the local chiral orientation
probability distribution in these modes is necessary, but not sufficient for
dominance of instanton-like fluctuations. The results with overlap Dirac
operator in Wilson gauge backgrounds at lattice spacings ranging from a~0.04 fm
to a~0.12 fm are reported, and it is found that the size and density of local
structures responsible for double-peaking of the distribution are in
disagreement with the assumptions of the Instanton Liquid Model. More
generally, our results suggest that vacuum fluctuations of topological charge
are not effectively dominated by locally quantized (integer-valued) lumps in
QCD.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures; v2: minor improvements in presentation, results

Shape parameters of Galactic open clusters
(abridged) In this paper we derive observed and modelled shape parameters
(apparent ellipticity and orientation of the ellipse) of 650 Galactic open
clusters identified in the ASCC-2.5 catalogue. We provide the observed shape
parameters of Galactic open clusters, computed with the help of a
multi-component analysis. For the vast majority of clusters these parameters
are determined for the first time. High resolution ("star by star") N-body
simulations are carried out with the specially developed GRAPE code
providing models of clusters of different initial masses, Galactocentric
distances and rotation velocities. The comparison of models and observations of
about 150 clusters reveals ellipticities of observed clusters which are too low
(0.2 vs. 0.3), and offers the basis to find the main reason for this
discrepancy. The models predict that after Myr clusters reach an
oblate shape with an axes ratio of , and with the major axis
tilted by an angle of with respect to the
Galactocentric radius due to differential rotation of the Galaxy. Unbiased
estimates of cluster shape parameters require reliable membership determination
in large cluster areas up to 2-3 tidal radii where the density of cluster stars
is considerably lower than the background. Although dynamically bound stars
outside the tidal radius contribute insignificantly to the cluster mass, their
distribution is essential for a correct determination of cluster shape
parameters. In contrast, a restricted mass range of cluster stars does not play
such a dramatic role, though deep surveys allow to identify more cluster
members and, therefore, to increase the accuracy of the observed shape
parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and

Transverse-target-spin asymmetry in exclusive -meson electroproduction
Hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons is studied with the
HERMES spectrometer at the DESY laboratory by scattering 27.6 GeV positron and
electron beams off a transversely polarized hydrogen target. The amplitudes of
five azimuthal modulations of the single-spin asymmetry of the cross section
with respect to the transverse proton polarization are measured. They are
determined in the entire kinematic region as well as for two bins in photon
virtuality and momentum transfer to the nucleon. Also, a separation of
asymmetry amplitudes into longitudinal and transverse components is done. These
results are compared to a phenomenological model that includes the pion pole
contribution. Within this model, the data favor a positive
transition form factor.Comment: DESY Report 15-14
A new method to quantify and compare the multiple components of fitness-A study case with kelp niche partition by divergent microstage adaptations to Temperature
Point 1 Management of crops, commercialized or protected species, plagues or life-cycle evolution are subjects requiring comparisons among different demographic strategies. The simpler methods fail in relating changes in vital rates with changes in population viability whereas more complex methods lack accuracy by neglecting interactions among vital rates. Point 2 The difference between the fitness (evaluated by the population growth rate.) of two alternative demographies is decomposed into the contributions of the differences between the pair-wised vital rates and their interactions. This is achieved through a full Taylor expansion (i.e. remainder = 0) of the demographic model. The significance of each term is determined by permutation tests under the null hypothesis that all demographies come from the same pool. Point 3 An example is given with periodic demographic matrices of the microscopic haploid phase of two kelp cryptic species observed to partition their niche occupation along the Chilean coast. The method provided clear and synthetic results showing conditional differentiation of reproduction is an important driver for their differences in fitness along the latitudinal temperature gradient. But it also demonstrated that interactions among vital rates cannot be neglected as they compose a significant part of the differences between demographies. Point 4 This method allows researchers to access the effects of multiple effective changes in a life-cycle from only two experiments. Evolutionists can determine with confidence the effective causes for changes in fitness whereas population managers can determine best strategies from simpler experimental designs.CONICYT-FRENCH EMBASSADY Ph.D. gran
Topology and chiral symmetry breaking in SU(N) gauge theories
We study the low-lying eigenmodes of the lattice overlap Dirac operator for
SU(N) gauge theories with N=2,3,4 and 5 colours. We define a fermionic
topological charge from the zero-modes of this operator and show that, as N
grows, any disagreement with the topological charge obtained by cooling the
fields, becomes rapidly less likely. By examining the fields where there is a
disagreement, we are able to show that the Dirac operator does not resolve
instantons below a critical size of about rho = 2.5 a, but resolves the larger,
more physical instantons. We investigate the local chirality of the near-zero
modes and how it changes as we go to larger N. We observe that the local
chirality of these modes, which is prominent for SU(2) and SU(3), becomes
rapidly weaker for larger N and is consistent with disappearing entirely in the
limit of N -> infinity. We find that this is not due to the observed
disappearance of small instantons at larger N.Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures, RevTe
Pseudoscalar Glueball Mass: QCD vs. Lattice Gauge Theory Prediction
We study whether the pseudoscalar glueball mass in full QCD can differ from
the prediction of quenched lattice calculations. Using properties of the
correlator of the vacuum topological susceptibility we derive an expression for
the upper bound on the QCD glueball mass. We show that the QCD pseudoscalar
glueball is lighter than the pure Yang-Mills theory glueball studied in
quenched lattice calculations. The mass difference between those two states is
of order of . The value calculated for the QCD glueball mass
can not be reconciled with any physical state observed so far in the
corresponding channel. The glueball decay constant and its production rate in
radiative decays are calculated. The production rate is large enough
to be studied experimentally.Comment: 18 pages, LaTex fil
Technical Design Report for the PANDA Solenoid and Dipole Spectrometer Magnets
This document is the Technical Design Report covering the two large
spectrometer magnets of the PANDA detector set-up. It shows the conceptual
design of the magnets and their anticipated performance. It precedes the tender
and procurement of the magnets and, hence, is subject to possible modifications
arising during this process.Comment: 10 pages, 14MB, accepted by FAIR STI in May 2009, editors: Inti

First Measurement of the Tensor Structure Function of the Deuteron
The \Hermes experiment has investigated the tensor spin structure of the
deuteron using the 27.6 GeV/c positron beam of \Hera. The use of a tensor
polarized deuteron gas target with only a negligible residual vector
polarization enabled the first measurement of the tensor asymmetry \At and
the tensor structure function \bd for average values of the Bj{\o}rken
variable and of the squared four-momentum transfer . The quantities \At and \bd are found to be
non-zero. The rise of \bd for decreasing values of can be interpreted to
originate from the same mechanism that leads to nuclear shadowing in
unpolarized scattering
Flavor decomposition of the sea quark helicity distributions in the nucleon from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering
Double-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive cross sections for the production
of identified pions and kaons have been measured in deep-inelastic scattering
of polarized positrons on a polarized deuterium target. Five helicity
distributions including those for three sea quark flavors were extracted from
these data together with re-analyzed previous data for identified pions from a
hydrogen target. These distributions are consistent with zero for all three sea
flavors. A recently predicted flavor asymmetry in the polarization of the light
quark sea appears to be disfavored by the data.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
