Quantification of periodontal attachment at single-rooted teeth
. The measurement process of attachment Joss has been criticized in recent years. Problems with clinical interpretation, precision of the measurement, and statistical manipulation of the obtained data, are some of the problems associated with the present methodology. The purpose of the present study was to propose an alternative measurement process which addresses some of the existing problems by estimating the lost attachment surface area (LAS) and the remaining attachment surface area (RAS) from a combination of clinical measurements. The results show that a linear combination of several sources of clinical information can be used to predict RAS and LAS. A diagnostic model for LAS (R 2 =81.5%) predicts the square root of LAS with information obtained from bucco-lingual attachment level measurements, the radiographic lost attachment area, the gingivitis index and the radiographic tooth length. This model increases the precision of the estimate of LAS by a factor of 1.86 when compared to the estimate of LAS using only attachment level measurements, A diagnostic model for RAS (R 2 =75.5%) predicts the square root of RAS with the information obtained from the remaining radiographic attachment area, the gingivitis index and the mobility index. Both linear inference models are constructed with measurements of anatomical landmarks to avoid the discrepancy between anatomical and clinical measurements in the produced estimates. It is concluded that modeling of periodontal data provides a simple, inexpensive, and precise diagnostic tool for predicting the lost and the remaining periodontal attachment of single-rooted teeth. The growth of leading-edge distortions on a viscous sheet
The results of a set of experiments to determine some features of the undulations that develop on the leading edge of a sheet of fluid on an inclined plane are presented. A range of fluid viscosities, fluid volumes, and plate angles was used. In nearly all the cases, the observed disturbances had a triangular or sawtooth shape, with only a single example of a finger or parallel-sided shape appearing. The power-law exponents for the position down the plate of both the tips of the disturbances and their roots, that is, the points where they join the uniform sheet above them, were calculated from a series of photographs, and the corresponding wavelengths measured. The exponents are broadly in line with those that can be deduced from a simple model including viscosity, gravity, and volume flux, and ignoring all capillary effects. This conclusion suggests that the criterion for distinguishing the two types of disturbance does not depend on the global dynamics of the developing structures, and that a detailed analysis of the tip and root regions, where capillarity will be significant, is needed for further progress to be made. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70941/2/PHFLE6-11-2-307-1.pd
Hydrodynamic theory of de-wetting
A prototypical problem in the study of wetting phenomena is that of a solid
plunging into or being withdrawn from a liquid bath. In the latter, de-wetting
case, a critical speed exists above which a stationary contact line is no
longer sustainable and a liquid film is being deposited on the solid.
Demonstrating this behavior to be a hydrodynamic instability close to the
contact line, we provide the first theoretical explanation of a classical
prediction due to Derjaguin and Levi: instability occurs when the outer, static
meniscus approaches the shape corresponding to a perfectly wetting fluid

Whole-rock isotope ratio (Hf, Nd, Pb, Sr) and trace element data for basement rocks at ocean drilling Sites U1438, 1201 and 447 immediately west of the KPR (Kyushu-Palau Ridge) are compared to those of FAB (forearc basalts) previously interpreted to be the initial products of IBM subduction volcanism. West-of-KPR basement basalts (drill sites U1438, 1201, 447) and FAB occupy the same Hf-Nd and Pb-Pb isotopic space and share distinctive source characteristics with εHf mostly >16.5 and up to εHf =19.8, which is more radiogenic than most Indian mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). Lead isotopic ratios are depleted, with ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁴Pb = 17.8-18.8 accompanying relatively high ²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁴Pb, indicating an Indian-MORB source unlike that of West Philippine Basin plume basalts. Some Sr isotopes show affects of seawater alteration, but samples with ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr8.0 appear to preserve magmatic compositions and also indicate a common source for west-of-KPR basement and FAB. Trace element ratios resistant to seawater alteration (La/Yb, Lu/Hf, Zr/Nb, Sm/Nd) in west-of-KPR basement are generally more depleted than normal MORB and so also appear similar to FAB. At Site U1438, only andesite sills intruding sedimentary rocks overlying the basement have subduction-influenced geochemical characteristics (εNd ∼6.6, εHf ∼13.8, La/Yb > 2.5, Nd/Hf ∼9). The key characteristic that unites drill site basement rocks west of KPR and FAB is the nature of their source, which is more depleted in lithophile trace elements than average MORB but with Hf, Nd, and Pb isotope ratios that are common in MORB. The lithophile element-depleted nature of FAB has been linked to initiation of IBM subduction in the Eocene, but Sm-Nd model ages and errorchron relationships in Site U1438 basement indicate that the depleted character of the rocks is a regional characteristic that was produced well prior to the time of subduction initiation and persists today in the source of modern IBM arc volcanic rocks with Sm/Nd>0.34 and εNd ∼9.0
Asymptotic theory for a moving droplet driven by a wettability gradient
An asymptotic theory is developed for a moving drop driven by a wettability
gradient. We distinguish the mesoscale where an exact solution is known for the
properly simplified problem. This solution is matched at both -- the advancing
and the receding side -- to respective solutions of the problem on the
microscale. On the microscale the velocity of movement is used as the small
parameter of an asymptotic expansion. Matching gives the droplet shape,
velocity of movement as a function of the imposed wettability gradient and

Predicted optimum ambient temperatures for broiler chickens to dissipate metabolic heat do not affect performance or improve breast muscle quality
<p></p><p>An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that muscle damage in fast-growing broiler chickens is associated with an ambient temperature that does not permit the birds to lose metabolic heat resulting in physiological heat stress and a reduction in meat quality.</p><p>The experiment was performed in 4 climate chambers and was repeated in 2 trials using a total of 200 male broiler chickens. Two treatments compared the recommended temperature profile and a cool regimen. The cool regimen was defined by a theoretical model that determined the environmental temperature that would enable heat generated by the bird to be lost to the environment.</p><p>There were no differences in growth rate or feed intake between the two treatments. Breast muscles from birds on the recommended temperature regimen were lighter, less red and more yellow than those from the cool temperature regimen. There were no differences in moisture loss or shear strength but stiffness was greater in breast muscle from birds housed in the cool compared to the recommended regimen.</p><p>Histopathological changes in the breast muscle were similar in both treatments and were characterised by mild to severe myofibre degeneration and necrosis with regeneration, fibrosis and adipocyte infiltration. There was no difference in plasma creatine kinase activity, a measure of muscle cell damage, between the two treatments consistent with the absence of differences in muscle pathology.</p><p>It was concluded that breast muscle damage in fast-growing broiler chickens was not the result of an inability to lose metabolic heat at recommended ambient temperatures. Phase diagram for non-axisymmetric plasma balls
Plasma balls and rings emerge as fluid holographic duals of black holes and
black rings in the hydrodynamic/gravity correspondence for the Scherk-Schwarz
AdS system. Recently, plasma balls spinning above a critical rotation were
found to be unstable against m-lobed perturbations. In the phase diagram of
stationary solutions the threshold of the instability signals a bifurcation to
a new phase of non-axisymmetric configurations. We find explicitly this family
of solutions and represent them in the phase diagram. We discuss the
implications of our results for the gravitational system. Rotating
non-axisymmetric black holes necessarily radiate gravitational waves. We thus
emphasize that it would be important, albeit possibly out of present reach, to
have a better understanding of the hydrodynamic description of gravitational
waves and of the gravitational interaction between two bodies. We also argue
that it might well be that a non-axisymmetric m-lobed instability is also
present in Myers-Perry black holes for rotations below the recently found

Do cash incentives increase the uptake of chlamydia testing in pharmacies?
BACKGROUND: Chlamydia screening uptake rates in Australian and overseas pharmacies vary widely (11% to 58%).
AIM: To determine the effect on the uptake of chlamydia screening in community pharmacies when a cash reward is offered to young people and participating pharmacies.
METHODS: The study was advertised in print and electronic media. People aged 16–30 years requested, or were offered, chlamydia testing kits by pharmacy staff (assistants and pharmacists). Participants who provided a urine sample and completed a questionnaire received AUD10 per person recruited. Urine specimens were tested in pools using PCR, with reflex testing of individual samples when the pool tested positive. Positive cases were notified by sexual health nurses and offered treatment.
RESULTS: Six urban community pharmacies took part in the study, each for 15 days. 979 testing kits were given out and 970 sample pots returned (99.1%); 66 (7%) did not contain urine. 74% (670/904) of the urine samples were determined to be from unique individuals, 65% of whom were male. 19 people (13 females and 6 males) tested positive; positivity rates were 5.2% (95% CI 2.8 to 8.8) for females and 1.4% for males. 11 (61%) of those testing positive were contacted and eight attended a local sexual health centre for treatment, three were treated elsewhere. Of the eight people treated at the sexual health centre, two females aged 15 and 20 years were diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease. Contact with the remaining eight positive individuals was not possible due to disconnected, incorrect or non-existent telephone numbers.
CONCLUSION: The 68% specimen return rate found in this study significantly exceeds those reported elsewhere. Strategies to prevent repeat testing, non-urine specimens and incorrect contact numbers are needed to ensure good clinical care and optimum use of resources
