Hopf algebras: motivations and examples
This paper provides motivation as well as a method of construction for Hopf
algebras, starting from an associative algebra. The dualization technique
involved relies heavily on the use of Sweedler's dual
Combinatorial Hopf algebras in quantum field theory I
This manuscript stands at the interface between combinatorial Hopf algebra
theory and renormalization theory. Its plan is as follows: Section 1 is the
introduction, and contains as well an elementary invitation to the subject. The
rest of part I, comprising Sections 2-6, is devoted to the basics of Hopf
algebra theory and examples, in ascending level of complexity. Part II turns
around the all-important Faa di Bruno Hopf algebra. Section 7 contains a first,
direct approach to it. Section 8 gives applications of the Faa di Bruno algebra
to quantum field theory and Lagrange reversion. Section 9 rederives the related
Connes-Moscovici algebras. In Part III we turn to the Connes-Kreimer Hopf
algebras of Feynman graphs and, more generally, to incidence bialgebras. In
Section10 we describe the first. Then in Section11 we give a simple derivation
of (the properly combinatorial part of) Zimmermann's cancellation-free method,
in its original diagrammatic form. In Section 12 general incidence algebras are
introduced, and the Faa di Bruno bialgebras are described as incidence
bialgebras. In Section 13, deeper lore on Rota's incidence algebras allows us
to reinterpret Connes-Kreimer algebras in terms of distributive lattices. Next,
the general algebraic-combinatorial proof of the cancellation-free formula for
antipodes is ascertained; this is the heart of the paper. The structure results
for commutative Hopf algebras are found in Sections 14 and 15. An outlook
section very briefly reviews the coalgebraic aspects of quantization and the

ARIS-Campaign: intercomparison of three ground based 22 GHz radiometers for middle atmospheric water vapor at the Zugspitze in winter 2009
This paper presents the Alpine Radiometer Intercomparison at the Schneefernerhaus (ARIS), which took place in winter 2009 at the high altitude station at the Zugspitze, Germany (47.42° N, 10.98° E, 2650 m). This campaign was the first direct intercomparison between three new ground based 22 GHz water vapor radiometers for middle atmospheric profiling with the following instruments participating: MIRA 5 (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), cWASPAM3 (Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Katlenburg-Lindau) and MIAWARA-C (Institute of Applied Physics, University of Bern). Even though the three radiometers all measure middle atmospheric water vapor using the same rotational transition line and similar fundamental set-ups, there are major differences between the front ends, the back ends, the calibration concepts and the profile retrieval. The spectrum comparison shows that all three radiometers measure spectra without severe baseline artifacts and that the measurements are in good general agreement. The measurement noise shows good agreement to the values theoretically expected from the radiometer noise formula. At the same time the comparison of the noise levels shows that there is room for instrumental and calibration improvement, emphasizing the importance of low elevation angles for the observation, a low receiver noise temperature and an efficient calibration scheme. <br><br> The comparisons of the retrieved profiles show that the agreement between the profiles of MIAWARA-C and cWASPAM3 with the ones of MLS is better than 0.3 ppmv (6%) at all altitudes. MIRA 5 has a dry bias of approximately 0.5 ppm (8%) below 0.1 hPa with respect to all other instruments. The profiles of cWASPAM3 and MIAWARA-C could not be directly compared because the vertical region of overlap was too small. The comparison of the time series at different altitude levels show a similar evolution of the H<sub>2</sub>O volume mixing ratio (VMR) for the ground based instruments as well as the space borne sensor MLS
Masculinity at work: The experiences of men in female dominated occupations
This paper presents the findings of a research project on the implications of men's non-traditional career choices for their experiences within the organization and for gender identity. The research is based on 40 in-depth interviews with male workers from four occupational groups: librarian-ship, cabin crew, nurses and primary school teachers. Results suggest a typology of male workers in female dominated occupations: seekers (who actively seek the career), finders (who find the occupation in the process of making general career decisions) and settlers (who settle into the career after periods of time in mainly male dominated occupations). Men benefit from their minority status through assumptions of enhanced leadership (the assumed authority effect), by being given differential treatment (the special consideration effect) and being associated with a more careerist attitude to work (the career effect). At the same time, they feel comfortable working with women (the zone of comfort effect). Despite this comfort, men adopt a variety of strategies to re-establish a masculinity that has been undermined by the 'feminine' nature of their work. These include re-labeling, status enhancement and distancing from the feminine. The dynamics of maintaining and reproducing masculinities within the non-traditional work setting are discussed in the light of recent theorising around gender, masculinity and work
Analytic Controllability of Time-Dependent Quantum Control Systems
The question of controllability is investigated for a quantum control system
in which the Hamiltonian operator components carry explicit time dependence
which is not under the control of an external agent. We consider the general
situation in which the state moves in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, a
drift term is present, and the operators driving the state evolution may be
unbounded. However, considerations are restricted by the assumption that there
exists an analytic domain, dense in the state space, on which solutions of the
controlled Schrodinger equation may be expressed globally in exponential form.
The issue of controllability then naturally focuses on the ability to steer the
quantum state on a finite-dimensional submanifold of the unit sphere in Hilbert
space -- and thus on analytic controllability. A relatively straightforward
strategy allows the extension of Lie-algebraic conditions for strong analytic
controllability derived earlier for the simpler, time-independent system in
which the drift Hamiltonian and the interaction Hamiltonia have no intrinsic
time dependence. Enlarging the state space by one dimension corresponding to
the time variable, we construct an augmented control system that can be treated
as time-independent. Methods developed by Kunita can then be implemented to
establish controllability conditions for the one-dimension-reduced system
defined by the original time-dependent Schrodinger control problem. The
applicability of the resulting theorem is illustrated with selected examples.Comment: 13 page
Invariants of Lie algebras extended over commutative algebras without unit
We establish results about the second cohomology with coefficients in the
trivial module, symmetric invariant bilinear forms and derivations of a Lie
algebra extended over a commutative associative algebra without unit. These
results provide a simple unified approach to a number of questions treated
earlier in completely separated ways: periodization of semisimple Lie algebras
(Anna Larsson), derivation algebras, with prescribed semisimple part, of
nilpotent Lie algebras (Benoist), and presentations of affine Kac-Moody

Arithmeticity vs. non-linearity for irreducible lattices
We establish an arithmeticity vs. non-linearity alternative for irreducible
lattices in suitable product groups, such as for instance products of
topologically simple groups. This applies notably to a (large class of)
Kac-Moody groups. The alternative relies on a CAT(0) superrigidity theorem, as
we follow Margulis' reduction of arithmeticity to superrigidity.Comment: 11 page
Irreducible Characters of General Linear Superalgebra and Super Duality
We develop a new method to solve the irreducible character problem for a wide
class of modules over the general linear superalgebra, including all the
finite-dimensional modules, by directly relating the problem to the classical
Kazhdan-Lusztig theory. We further verify a parabolic version of a conjecture
of Brundan on the irreducible characters in the BGG category \mc{O} of the

Supervisor-Directed Emotional Labor as Upward Influence: An Emotions-as-Social-Information Perspective
To access organizational resources, subordinates often strive to influence supervisors' impressions. Moreover, subordinates' interactions with supervisors are known to be ripe with emotions. Nevertheless, research on upward impression management has rarely examined how subordinates' emotion regulation in supervisor interactions may shape their tangible outcomes. The present study introduces subordinates' emotional labor toward supervisors as a novel means of upward influence. Building on the emotionsâasâsocialâinformation model, we propose that supervisorâdirected emotional labor indirectly relates with supervisory reward recommendations by shaping supervisors' liking and perceived competence of subordinates. Moreover, we cast supervisors' epistemic motivation as a boundary condition for these indirect relations. We tested these notions using timeâlagged data from 377 subordinates and 91 supervisors. When supervisors' epistemic motivation was higher (but not lower), (1) supervisorâdirected surface acting related negatively with supervisors' liking and perceived competence of subordinates and (2) supervisorâdirected deep acting related positively with supervisors' liking of subordinates. Liking and perceived competence, in turn, related positively with supervisors' willingness to recommend subordinates for organizational rewards. These findings highlight supervisorâdirected emotional labor as an upward impression management strategy with both beneficial (deep acting) and detrimental (surface acting) implications, and they illustrate important mechanisms and a key contingency factor for these consequences
