Interplay between Fermi gamma-ray lines and collider searches
We explore the interplay between lines in the gamma-ray spectrum and LHC searches involving missing energy and photons. As an example, we consider a singlet Dirac
fermion dark matter with the mediator for Fermi gamma-ray line at 130 GeV. A new chiral or local U(1) symmetry makes weak-scale dark matter natural and provides the axion or
Z 0 gauge boson as the mediator connecting between dark matter and electroweak gauge bosons. In these models, the mediator particle can be produced in association with a
monophoton at colliders and it produces large missing energy through the decays into a DM pair or ZZ; Z with at least one Z decaying into a neutrino pair. We adopt the monophoton searches with large missing energy at the LHC and impose the bounds on the coupling and mass of the mediator field in the models. We show that the parameter space of the Z 0 mediation model is already strongly constrained by the LHC 8TeV data, whereas a certain region of the parameter space away from the resonance in axion-like mediator models are bounded. We foresee the monophoton bounds on the Z 0 and axion mediation models at the LHC 14 TeV

Resurrection and redescription of Varestrongylus alces (Nematoda; Protostrongylidae), a lungworm of the Eurasian moose (Alces alces), with report on associated pathology
Varestrongylus alces, a lungworm in Eurasian moose from Europe has been considered a
junior synonym of Varestrongylus capreoli, in European roe deer, due to a poorly detailed
morphological description and the absence of a type-series.
Methods
Specimens used in the redescription were collected from lesions in the lungs of Eurasian
moose, from Vestby, Norway. Specimens were described based on comparative morphology
and integrated approaches. Molecular identification was based on PCR, cloning and
sequencing of the ITS-2 region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic analysis
compared V. alces ITS-2 sequences to these of other Varestrongylus species and other
protostrongylids.
Results
Varestrongylus alces is resurrected for protostrongylid nematodes of Eurasian moose from
Europe. Varestrongylus alces causes firm nodular lesions that are clearly differentiated from
the adjacent lung tissue. Histologically, lesions are restricted to the parenchyma with adult,
egg and larval parasites surrounded by multinucleated giant cells, macrophages, eosinophilic
granulocytes, lymphocytes. The species is valid and distinct from others referred to
Varestrongylus, and should be separated from V. capreoli. Morphologically, V. alces can be
distinguished from other species by characters in the males that include a distally bifurcated
gubernaculum, arched denticulate crura, spicules that are equal in length and relatively short,
and a dorsal ray that is elongate and bifurcated. Females have a well-developed provagina,
and are very similar to those of V. capreoli. Morphometrics of first-stage larvae largely
overlap with those of other Varestrongylus. Sequences of the ITS-2 region strongly support
mutual independence of V. alces, V. cf. capreoli, and the yet undescribed species of
Varestrongylus from North American ungulates. These three taxa form a well-supported
crown-clade as the putative sister of V. alpenae. The association of V. alces and Alces or its
ancestors is discussed in light of host and parasite phylogeny and host historical
biogeography.
Varestrongylus alces is a valid species, and should be considered distinct from V. capreoli.
Phylogenetic relationships among Varestrongylus spp. from Eurasia and North America are
complex and consistent with faunal assembly involving recurrent events of geographic
expansion, host switching and subsequent speciation.

Decaying into the Hidden Sector
The existence of light hidden sectors is an exciting possibility that may be
tested in the near future. If DM is allowed to decay into such a hidden sector
through GUT suppressed operators, it can accommodate the recent cosmic ray
observations without over-producing antiprotons or interfering with the
attractive features of the thermal WIMP. Models of this kind are simple to
construct, generic and evade all astrophysical bounds. We provide tools for
constructing such models and present several distinct examples. The light
hidden spectrum and DM couplings can be probed in the near future, by measuring
astrophysical photon and neutrino fluxes. These indirect signatures are
complimentary to the direct production signals, such as lepton jets, predicted
by these models.Comment: 40 pages, 5 figure
A note on the primordial abundance of stau NLSPs
In scenarios with a gravitino LSP, there exist strong BBN constraints on the
abundance of a possible stau NLSP. We find that in settings with substantial
left-right mixing of the stau mass eigenstates these constraints can be evaded
even for very long-lived staus.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, discussion on vacuum stability adde

Gravity-mediated (or composite) Dark Matter confronts astrophysical data
We consider the astrophysical bounds on a new form of dark matter, the so called Gravity-mediated Dark Matter. In this scenario, dark matter communicates with us through a mediator sector composed of gravitational resonances, namely a new scalar (radion) and a massive spin-two resonance (massive graviton). We consider specific models motivated by natural electroweak symmetry breaking or weak-scale dark matter in the context of models in warped extra-dimensions and their composite duals. The main Dark Matter annihilation mechanism is due to the interactions of KK gravitons to gauge bosons that propagate in bulk. We impose the bounds on monochromatic or continuum photons from Fermi-LAT and HESS. We also explore scenarios in which the Fermi gamma-ray line could be a manifestation of Gravity-mediated Dark Matter
The ‘microflora hypothesis’ of allergic diseases
Increasingly, epidemiologic and clinical data support the hypothesis that perturbations in the gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota because of antibiotic use and dietary differences in ‘industrialized’ countries have disrupted the normal microbiota-mediated mechanisms of immunological tolerance in the mucosa, leading to an increase in the incidence of allergic airway disease. The data supporting this ‘microflora hypothesis’ includes correlations between allergic airway disease and (1) antibiotic use early in life, (2) altered fecal microbiota and (3) dietary changes over the past two decades. Our laboratory has recently demonstrated that mice can develop allergic airway responses to allergens if their endogenous microbiota is altered at the time of first allergen exposure. These experimental and clinical observations are consistent with other studies demonstrating that the endogenous microbiota plays a significant role in shaping the development of the immune system. Data are beginning to accumulate that a ‘balanced’ microbiota plays a positive role in maintaining mucosal immunologic tolerance long after post-natal development. Other studies have demonstrated that even small volumes delivered to the nasopharynx largely end up in the GI tract, suggesting that airway tolerance and oral tolerance may operate simultaneously. The mechanism of microbiota modulation of host immunity is not known; however, host and microbial oxylipins are one potential set of immunomodulatory molecules that may control mucosal tolerance. The cumulative data are beginning to support the notion that probiotic and prebiotic strategies be considered for patients coming off of antibiotic therapy.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73451/1/j.1365-2222.2005.02379.x.pd
